I just learned recently that I could run the speaker out of my Freyette PS-2A back into its reactive load and then off to DAW and IRs. This vid confirms it works well, so it might be time to look for a preamp. My amps are mid-gain. A Plexi clone and a Marshall 2525h. I want moar gainz -- actually I want the right mix of grind, sizzle, sustain, overtones, tight, and fat (tight can be the enemy of fat though, because high pass can thin out a tone). I am not sure what to get. I kind of want to build my own single channel, one trick unicorn preamp, lolz, but the extent of my soldering is a few simple amp mods and pickup swaps. 6550 and 5150? I have never owned one and can't remember much about trying them. The highest gain amp I ever had was a Laney IRT, or various preamps like the JMP-1 back in the days I did not get up twice a night to pee (It's 4am here in NZ and now wide awake). I have tried lots of plugins of various high gain amps. I tend to like the amount of gain and the tightness they have, but always miss that wild, brash Marshall kerrang. That's the thing with amps that have the Marshall lineage. Refine the tone too much, and it can lose the thing. -- Old school Marshall is not a nice tone when cranked. It's a bit nasty sounding and not easy to play like a modern high gain amp is. Flubby low end that's kind of over the top, barking mids, and piercing highs. Rock'n'roll. P.S. EVH is a tone I have chased for sure, but I chase so many others. Viv Cambpell when he was with Dio was such a great tone that folks seem to have forgotten. Early Iron Maiden. Randy and Jake. Gary Moore when he was playing hard rock instead of blues had a smoking hot tone, e.g., the Victims Of The Future album. YJM on the Rising Force album is good too. Really, really good. I also like so many of Jimmy Page's tones. I am not realy a GnR fan, but I like Slash's tonees too. Then there's Angus. Great tone. Ritchie Blackmore, especially with Rainbow and then the Perfect Strangers album. Brian May of course too. The best tone I ever heard live was Dave Gilmour. It was freaking quadraphonic, so the delays were all around us in the stadium. Just unreal. All of the above are references to their lead tone. I am a bedroom noddler these days you see (I can not sit or stand thru a gig these days, let alone play one -- spinal injuries).

Michael, a question about the Standberg. How easy did you find adapting to it? I played a few headless guitars when I was last in LA and while they sounded great, the ergonomics made it feel like a foreign instrument. This is especially evident after playing essentially vintage strat inspired designs. Would like to hear your perspective on how you found the guitar, especiallly the enduraneck (Not sure if it's called that, but I think it's that neck with the flat surface for your thumb on the back?). Thanks! Love your videos.

Hi! Thanks! I hear what you're saying, but I will add that the unruly, wild, bright personality of the 6505 really makes it work for that kind of thing. Is it refined sounding? Nope. Is it sweet? Nope. ...but it sounds that way to me, unrefined and wild. I'm looking forward to trying the new Uberschall, hopefully that will be the best of both worlds, wild and refined.

Got it completely and your points are well taken.. Very. It’s always a matter of tonal preference when all is said and done, anyway. But where the Mid peak is centered determines a lot. I could be wrong but the EQ network on this seems tipped quite a bit to upper Mids, maybe something on the order of 5K? Just guessing here, of course. But it’s not the amount of gain per se available on this, which is great. It’s just the tonal center.
@BigHairyGuitars
@BigHairyGuitars Жыл бұрын
@@ampcharge5509 Yeah, I think you're right. It really wants to push the 5k upper mids zone, and if you try to dial that out (with the controls) it feels unfocused. It certainly has a strong personality. I seem to remember that the Diezel Herbert module was amazingly chunky too, but doesn't have that upper mids leanings.
