I swapped 6L6 tubes into my JSX combo and liked it better that way, also had a Voodoo modded JSX head was incredible but sadly I had to let that go.

Crunch channel surprised me, I also was expecting more or less the same sound but I agree, the JSX sounds more like a hot rod Marshall and the XXX ii sounds more Mesa like metal tones, less mid, colder harder and heavier. Both sound great but I definitely prefer what I am hearing out of the JSX! Miss mine!

Not sure if you checked the levels on send and return but the footswitch controls if its on or off (can be on even if the footswitch is unplugged because it remembers). If it is on, then even when nothing is plugged in then the send and return are affecting tone and having the return low especially then it sounds anemic. Having the send low also definitely also does the same

When you are on the Ultra channel the noise might be the tremolo springs in the floyd rose

Oh and the noise gate cuts the sizzly highs and some of the lows also slightly

They both sound great. The JSX doesn't sound like what I'd expect from a Satriani signature amp. I preferred the JSX but just slightly.

Just a quick question. Like mentioned in my previous comment, I have a 3120 that I really love, but for some reasons, even with a noise gate, it can be noisy as hell when I play with the band (like too much), so I was wondering if it was the same for the JSX? I'm not sure if it's only my amp that has that problem. I lean towards buying a JSX, but if it gives me the same results, I might reconsider. Mind you, I've owned a shit ton of high gain amps (including the EVH 5150 50w and 100w...and yes both are noisy amps but way more manageable) so I'm used to noise haha

To answer your question. Yeah the jsx is just as noisy. But I've never had an issue with that because I throw a cheap noise gate in the loop. Most of the noise generates after the preamp. Maybe you have a microphonic preamp tube 🤷‍♂️. It wasn't anything I couldn't control I can say that for both amps

Good comparison! To me, the JSX was the winner hands down in terms of tone and clarity. For some reason, the XXX-2 gain felt very synthetic/digital to me and the amp was a bit too scooped for my taste. The clean was bad. The JSX was clearer and even a bit tighter. Maybe look at the preamp tubes like you mentioned...I have a 3120 loaded with KT77 that I really love (in my top 3 of best amps I've ever played so far) but I put a low preamp gain tube in v1 or v2 and it helped tame the gain big time. It's more manageable and sounds awesome.

Yeah I still haven't taken it apart to look at the preamp tubes. I def need to, just haven't gotten to it. I lean towards the XXX2 just because of the way I play. Thanks for checking it out man

I have JSX made in 2005 and 2007. I also have a Triple XXX II. 2005 JSX has more treble oriented cleans than 2007. Dirty channels are almost identical but 2005 has more aggressive mids (2.5/10 vs. 5/10 for the same amount of mids). There may be some revisions but i do not know what, where and why :D Triple XXX II is like 2007 JSX but dirty channels have way more gain.

@@DeathMetalDevin it's written on the back. Older EU versions have the item number with starting 00 and newer have 03. Maybe it's revision code. But all us versions have item number with 00. Even higher serial number from 2007 than mine. So I don't know what does it mean for EU versions.

The jsx comes around used alot more often than the xxx2. I wouldn't doubt it if I was the only one in the state with one lol

I've owned 5150, JSX and Ultra 120 Plus.... nothing but disappointment... glad to be done with Peavey, now have a Ceriatone Chupacabra and MESA Rectifier, never been happier with my sound.
