I vote for NO vintage 30 for this amp too. Those speakers put a magnifying glass on the worst sounding portion of the distortion spectrum. When I had the big slo 100 I used the closest speaker you can find that the amp was originally voiced for -the eminence v12. Green backs are pretty similar. This amp has a stinging ripping high end that cuts through anything in a spectacular way but that needs careful speaker matching. This is about the most flattering demo I’ve heard from this amp!
@cragginshred Жыл бұрын
Spot on, and I did not know that. I thought since they put V30's in their cabs thats what they voiced it with. But yeah fully agree, and thanks!
@mKreifeldt Жыл бұрын
Yea the story is kind of murky but Ive read mike didn’t like v30s either. His cabs came with eminence or v30 speakers on and off over the years. And the “vintage 30” seems to have undergone various changes over the years too and probably not all documented. Btw I bought the slo30 yesterday and very happy to have soldano back in my life! Your trick with the sd1 in the crunch channel pushes the amp into a more classic Marshall tonality …Im getting similar results with a love pedal eternity run the same way. Great for old vh and dokken!

@@mKreifeldt I can help with the murkiness on the speaker topic! In 2002 I stopped by the factory three times to make installment payments on the Astroverb effects prototype that they built and took to the 1999 NAMM show. Each time I asked Mike stupid newbie questions about speakers and tube amps and he was always extremely nice. He wasn't just putting up with my stupid questions, he was enjoying talking about gear and teaching me about speakers. He told me that Greenbacks are his favorite speaker with his amp. Anyway, regarding the speakers, Mike probably did not design the SLO for Eminence speakers. Celestions were always the standard for rock players and rock amps so I guess that's why he went with them. I asked him why he switched to Eminence and he said that it was because Celestion's customer service was terrible, he couldn't get a hold of them, and even worse, if he placed an order for a pallet of Vintage 30s and two pallets of Greenbacks they would FORCE HIM to purchase just as many pallets of V30s as Greenbacks he was ordering. Not only did he not want to pay for speakers that he didn't need and didn't have room to store, but he didn't appreciate being treated like trash. So, he switched to Eminence. I did see him on a KZbin interview video related to the new SLO100s starting to be made by BAD where he said that he never liked how his amps sounded with V30s, but that hearing the new one now through them they sounded good. I have a V30 and a WGS Retro 30 in a 2x12 and a G12H30 in the 1x12 combo cab. I play at a somewhat loud bedroom level, but I play A LOT quieter than most players who crank it to get the power tubes going. At that lower volume the V30 is bearable, if you are like me and like a lot of upper frequencies and presence in your cutting rhythm tone. But with that said, I have had a lot of times where I was frustrated with how bright it was soloing with an HSS strat (I do run my presence way up at 7 because I like that defined present sound). Of course the fix for that brightness is a little treble reduction on the guitar. On my PRS-like guitar, that treble reduction is not necessary.

I keep going back to this as an AMAZING example of what the SLO can do. Greenbacks sound miles better with this circuit than V30s; the former fills out the lower mids but preserve the upper mid punch while the latter just take your head off. Then again, I’m a Bogner guy that loves full low mids. I think I saw on a forum that you were going to try a JHS volume pedal in the loop to see if it functioned like a return volume like on the SLO 100. Do you remember if it worked? The later masters in my other amps (return on my XTC 3534 and the lead master on my Silver Jubilee) work wonders.
@cragginshred2 жыл бұрын
Yes the GB's rule! I tried that pedal and it cuts the volume and tone so quickly I could not use it. The newer Slo 30's have a better MV taper so it comes on smoother. I have comcluded if i low volume rehearsing or jaming I'm using my Fractal FM9. Tube amps sound good loud period :) .

Its a variation of the 4 cm my buddy came across that allows you to bypass the amps pre amp section. It begins as a pretty dull clean tone due to no ability to eq from the amp. that's where your effects unit comes in. Here I plug an EQ in and add Reverb and a little delay to get the tones you hear. I will do a Video explaining the routine as well as the HX set up hopefully this weekend.
