Everybody knows, like beauty being in the eye of the beholder, the magic sound of music is in the ear of the listener! I've been playing music for over 50 years, I remember Peavey from the begining, and I STILL hear their in-house Scorpion speakers as more musical, less shrill and fatiguing to my ears over short and long term listening. The Sheffield may seem sharp and clear at first, but then becomes more a metallic/electric "blanket" to me over most of the musical tones. The Scorpion seems to present a more natural depth and separation of the different musical notes in and thru the mix. Just my opinion.

I hear ya. I’ve spent many years playing through scorpions too. I had a 1x12 cab I put one in for the longest time and played many different heads through it. Always consistent and reliable, never feared blowing the speaker. I like both speakers, just a matter of tweaking the EQ on the amp to suit either.

I appreciate your effort in making this video. The speaker makes such a profound impact on the sound and some EQ techniques, either on the amp or with external EQ, can't make up for that. I was a Scorpion fanboy because I never heard a comparison video with shorter time intervals like the ones you demonstrated. Listening to similar licks for a few seconds, back to back, rather than longer intervals was a great choice. My brain could maintain the short-term sound memory for a better comparison. Thank you.

Ahh , I can some insight to this . Owning an embarrassing number of Peavey amps I think I can shed some light on this . I bought my 1st one in 1981 (a Duece) it had eminence drivers , they were great but didn't have the break up that a Celestion would have . Replaced them with a set of " modern lead 70's) and oh man what a difference . Fast forward a few years and I got a Vtn 120 half stack which had GK85's , very nice ! I decided they weren't "hard" enough so I got a 4 some of Scorpion Ultimates and well , what a learning experience . Scorps aren't a "loose" driver like a Celestion ect . They are tight like "vice grips" . I found that they are really for when an amp is driven hard and then they move without "losing their cool" . In other words , take a cab with greenbacks (4 speakers) and drive it to weel say 100 watts . The speakers flub all over and lose their tone aka that nice break up ( owned 50 or so of them , kinda know this) , but a scorp can be run up hard and "then" make it's mark . Unfortunately it's "way to loud" by then .

A 412 oversized Marshall /Mesa cab loaded with Celestion G12-T75s in the bottom and Celestion V30s in the top could arguably be said to be one of the most glorious cabs for modern extended range or low tuned metal guitar sounds. Filthy thick bottom end and clear stinging highs from the T12-75s combined with the warm fuzzy mellow tone with the humped upper midrange of the V30s are to my ears the just right combination of speakers in a 412 to suit the kind of modern day metal I play. Funny thing is,- you can achieve the exact same tonal character from a combination of an old school US made Peavey 412 cab with Sheffields in the bottom and Scorpions or Blue Marvels in the top,- at one third the price!!!! Always loved Peavey amps and cabs,- you can kick the stuff down the fire escape stairs,- bring it back up, give it a low roundhouse kick, squeeze it a bit and the gear just fires right back up again. Fairly priced, well built, nigh indestructible and the amps just seem to always sound good,- and rock hard! What´s not to love? Peavey FTW. Always have - always will. Greetings from the corpse painted symphonic black melodeath progressive folkcore Metal Kingdoms of Scandinavia. :)

I just bought a mid 90's Peavey Stereo Chorus 212 with the scorpions. Its the second and final version with extra eq and master volume. It's 130 watts x 2. It also has the footswitch and dust cover. Save for one loose pot, all the rest feel tight. I also own the smaller Studio Chorus 210. It's a silverstripe transtube delta logo circa 1999 and has a real spring reverb in it. The 212 is digital reverb.

This confirms what I’ve suspected for a long time, which is the issues I had for not really digging Peavey amps in the 80s wasn’t the electronics, but rather the Scorpion and Black Widow speakers. I loved the 70s amps that wee Eminence equipped. I love everything with Sheffields too. Great demo!

@@k.h.1587 Yup, pretty sure, friend. They were made for Peavey by Eminence. OEM Peavey and Eminence speakers were all made by Eminence since the early '80s and onwards. I find little chance of being wrong because I have stumbled on that information several times. Of course there was no Eminence tag on those OEM speakers back then. Some Fender OEM speakers were and have always been made by Jensen, too. The Black Widow was also sold as an Eminence aftermarket speakers up until a dozen of years before, same with the Scorpion, which was not named Scorpion, but Eminence sold it as an aftermarket, too. It's Delta Pro 12 A if I recall correctly, a hi fi speaker well suited for guitar too.

Nope. From Hartley Peavey: "We’re the only company making guitar amps that actually makes their own speakers! The reason I did that was because the speaker manufacturers wouldn’t listen to me! I went to the so-called premium speaker companies to tell them that my customers were blowing their speakers out. They would give me this condescending speech about how my customers didn’t understand how to use their precision transducers. So I said, “That may be true, but the fact is, if your speaker blows out in a Peavey cabinet, they don’t blame you; they blame me.” In desperation, we designed and made our own speakers. By the way, the speakers that we make have field-replaceable cones. You take out three bolts, put on a new basket/cone assembly, and you’re back in business. Nobody else does that. We do! None of our competitors builds speakers like we do because total field replaceability requires much tighter tolerances, which costs more money. Peavey does it that way because that’s the way it should be done. My name is on every product, and I take pride in everything that leaves our factory".@@georgefromgreece4119

As a person who is almost specifically used PV speakers for More than 25 years. The scorpions cut better than a lot of speakers and sound great live. The Sheffield's record not just a little better but, exponentially better than the scorpions do But they need a 1/3 ratio of vintage 30's to help them cut. My vote is nine times out of 10 I want scorpions live. 7 times out of 10 I want Sheffield's for recording. Personally I use greenbacks for recording and scorpions live.

Yeah, I just got a Peavey Bandit 65 Solo Series with a Scorpion not long after I decided to get a cheap Squier Bullet Telecaster. I'm having a lot of fun with the both of them. I've been missing out.

I'm a big Peavey fan too. I was quite surprised listening to the 2 speakers, there was a big difference between them which has got me thinking. I wonder how the 2 speakers would sound like in the Silver Stripe Bandit. I'm thinking of changing the stock speaker in my Silver Stripe Bandit for a Celestion Greenback so I'm curious to see how it goes in the Bandit but changing the speaker is a big commitment coz if you're not happy with it then you've got a speaker to sell. I know the Greenbacks are a pretty versatile speaker and it'd probably sound good but it's a bit of a gamble.

Honestly, since the silver stripe has an extension speaker jack, try to take it to a store and check it out driving cabs with different speakers. That should give an idea of what it’ll sound like (I know cab construction has an impact). I have an eminence swamp thang in a bandit 65 that I love the sound of.

Hi bought a block letter red stripe peavey bandit with no Footswitch. Do I need it, ..or can I access all the options manually from the control panel? Also what's a cheap alternative Footswitch that'll work with that model? Thanks!

Right on. You should be able to switch channels without it. But any latching style dual button foot switch will work. This is the cheapest I see: amzn.to/43YhIIG

So your test using same tone settings does tell a story, but I wonder what the Scorpion sounds like if you eq'd to get the best sound.

I have a chance to buy a peavey 4x12 with the black dot aluminum center covers. Is that a good cabinet and are those the sheffield speakers?.....

Those would be the scorpion speakers. I would say yes, depending on the price. They’re a pretty dark sounding speaker, but they handle a lot of power. So if your amp is loud and bright, they would fit that well.

You must check if one of your speakers were not reconed. Something doesnt sound right and representative of what I know about these two speakers. Check cone numbers. Is this the original Scorpion or Plus or Ultra ?

I hate to step outta line here but I'm liking the Scorpion better. My experience in real life backs it up too - I didn't like the Sheffield in my Bandit or Ultra 112 but I've really liked each Scorpion I've tried. The best is the Scorpion Ultra from the Triumph PAG. Only downside is that they weigh 18 pounds...

I just watched one of Glenn Frickers videos where he pretty much trashed the Sheffield speaker he says their is a super dramatic difference in the mix when he compared it with a EVH speaker but I couldn’t tell. I mean there was a difference but like I said it wasn’t as dramatic as say between that scorpion and the Sheffield in your tests.

Fricker used the Sheffield 1200 model in that 5150 cab. Bandits come with the Sheffield 1230. There are different varieties of Sheffields. I think he finally sold his 5150 cab, it is not listed anymore on Kijiji in Windsor.

This sound review is so subjective...throw a les paul into the mix ..the scorpian scoops that tele way nicer...if you want an 80s rock tone scorpians kill the Sheffield's...im running a 1230 in my vk212 with a wgs veteran 30...but i actually prefer my scorpions in my 212 extention cabinet...they actually csme out of a set of monitors and were broke in killer ...they are mint and not worn out

Nothing wrong with a 4x12 scorpion. I had a homemade 1x12 with a scorpion in it that i gigged with for a while, always sounded great live. And I’ve never heard of someone blowing a scorpion, so you can be loud and proud with that cab.

There are EQ tweaks that could be made to balance between the two. And I’ve gigged with both and been happy with the tone. But, I am looking into replacing the Sheffield in my Silver Stripe to get something more smooth and full sounding 🤷‍♂️ (always tweaking and tinkering…)

I think the Sheffield "breaks up" at a lower level...The Scorpion is cleaner and darker. If you want all music to sound the same...buy a fender...😮...then you won't be able to afford a guitar ... musical sameness problem solved.
