Peckforton Light Railway - HGLW diesel loco load test

I was asked how much would the HGLW loco, which I bought secondhand and modified, pull. At the time, I had no idea. I've now fitted couplings and given it a load test - basically attaching more and more wagons until the wheels just started slipping. It just about managed 13 LGB skip wagons and a brake van on the flat. This is more than I really need for a shunting loco which will potter about the sand quarry sidings. If I could squeeze in more weight it would undoubtedly pull more. Peckforton Light Railway is a 45mm gauge garden model railway depicting what I have imagined to be a three-foot narrow gauge railway which might have been constructed to serve the copper mines and local communities along the Peckforton Hills in Cheshire, UK. I do love this little diesel more than anything else on your railway. As for weight....I'm in strong favour of real lead. Its not trendy, but is about 50% more dense than steel, which is what those wheel weights are that most people use in their locos nowadays.

I agree. This loco came with steel wheel balancing weights when I bought it. I've squeezed some additional lead flashing into any remaining available spaces as removing all the steel weights would be a fiddle.

Fantastic, looks like he pulls like a tank. One question, sort of related. I’ve recently picked up a OO Bachmann Tollemache Pulverised Coal box van and can’t find anything online about the company. I wondered if it had anything to do with the Tollemache’s of Peckforton Castle? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers - Alex Y

Interesting. The Tollemache family owned properties in East Anglia and founded the Tolly Cobbold brewery business. It wouldn't surprise me if a branch of the family was also involved with coal.

A powerful shunter is a good shunter in my eyes. Could be used as a rescue engine in case an engine breaks down. Though, with the quality of your model making, that is unlikely to happen at all.
