Wow a year already. This take was largely inspired by Dianna Walsted and the may other KZbin friends who do this type of tank on the regular. It's not meant to show one way is better or not just me exploring different methods.

For a tank that doesn't need so much maintenance the tank looks good, maintenance and cost of living were the two most important factors that made me go with only two tanks, I am enjoying the hobby more now that I don't have to take care of more than two tanks.

Rosy barbs in my experience will attempt to eat pretty much anything, I've had them dig up and eat some clay root tabs I was trying. I think they really are better suited to ponds than aquariums, although I love how friendly they are in an aquarium. Your cherry barbs do look great in that tank though, I keep meaning to get some.

They did ok but I moved them to a bigger tank. They seem to be decent community fish. But it’s my first time owning them.

I don’t really like the make money from your viewers stuff. I don’t hold anyone who does in low esteem it’s a personal thing with me. I mean I have affiliate links. But I’m asked to link out stuff all the time anyway might as well. But I don’t do this as a “job” so I’m not able to give it the attention I feel would be acceptable to set up a pay to play club on the channel and really do it right. And the clones are no help. 😀

I remember the setup on this tank. I find it fascinating you don’t do weekly water changes on it.

When ever I check it has lower nitrates that "regular" tanks. Honestly I'm a little afraid of messing up the biofilter so I'm really hands off with it.

At 3:38 you show a close-up of one of the vails with a hairy-like outgrowth appearing on its surface. Coincidentally, I have the same type of growth on my vails.. it seems to be a green color. Is this norm for that type of plant - for it to extensively long "fuzz" growth?

Do you get bio film on the surface since there is no water agitation? I’ve done dirted tanks, but always had a filter. Thinking about doing a filter less setup, but using a surface skimmer to keep the surface clean and provide some flow.
@pecktec
@pecktec 3 ай бұрын
What’s odd is no. I have gotten that in so many others but this one never had that happen.
@SequoiaElisabeth
@SequoiaElisabeth Жыл бұрын
Looks like it would benefit from a skimmer, at least temporarily. Otherwise, I would say this tank is a success. Dirted tanks are a double edge sword in my opinion. They have greater issues with algae, yet the plants do very well.
@Constantine_Cvl8
@Constantine_Cvl8 Жыл бұрын
I personally don't really mind algae, as they are but another part of the aquatic ecosystem. Though it is quite obvious why most dislike it.

Regarding the shrimp deaths - is this the 'father fish tank' with the added soil supplements? In my one of those I had a similar shrimp die off at the start of the tank's life, but I reintroduced them to the tank again after 6 months and a couple of water changes and they did much better. My assumption was that it was the additional iron I put in the soil. I know Father Fish has said he finds it difficult to keep shrimp in his tanks as well.

@@pecktecmy experience with cherry shrimp was the same. Died in a dirted tank. What I learned was you need a very well established tank before you add shrimp. They need all that algea build up to eat. I set up dirted tanks. Let the plants grow. Then add fish. Let it go and build up algea then I add shrimp. Just my personal experience.

How far into the dirt cap do you put the plants. Do you put the plants just into the cap so the roots grow down into the bottom substrate?, or do you go through the cap and plant the plants directly into the bottom layer substrate?

Cherry shrimp needs oxygen. The levels must have been too low for them. The same thing happened with my filterless vase. So added a tiny airstone and all the deaths stopped.
