Every few months I go through what I've labeled the "Tornado Phase," where, for some reason, I hyperfixate on all things tornado, and every time I go through this, I ALWAYS come to watch Hank's videos. I get very excited every time it's tornado season because I know he'll be uploading new content, and he never disappoints.

Most chasers are talking to the stream/radio or getting clips to sell to news who don't care about audio. Hank is trying to get the shot for this channel and he likes clean audio. He also chases solo which helps because he isnt worried about a second person or having a second person worried about the pair.

The shot of the tornado weaving in and out of the wind turbines is perhaps one of my favorite in this video. Tornadoes are simply awe-inspiring, commanding a respectful fear wherever they go. They can kill easily and it is a travesty when they do, but one cannot deny they are just so intriguing and eye-catching. How would you not want to stop and just stare at or film one? I am not sure if there is any other force or power on earth quite like that. Even other natural disasters like volcanic eruptions or something still feel like they belong on earth. Tornadoes are like some other-worldly thing that visits our planet from time to time to wreak havoc and remind us they are out there, yet no one storm is alike. If this is what we have on earth, just imagine what some of the other planets in the universe have to put up with weather-wise. I've been in tornado-warned storms before, but never had the opportunity to see one clearly with my own eyes. Is it weird that I want to someday?

I thought that too..and I live where there are no tornadoes (rural upstate NY). In 2020 we had an EF1 tornado...that's all it was..it came up the hill over my house and down the road. Maybe a mile or two. EF1 but it was fucking terrifying. It was a wall of grey moving up the hill directly for my little farm house. Shit was flying around outside, trees snapped and a few old pines completely uprooted. We ran around in the house looking out from window to window in complete disbelief😂 I'm laughing now but every storm we get now, my kids are scared and I admit I get freaked out. We get crazy wind as it is. But that day we'll never forget. First summer in our dream home.

I recently endured a tornado. I was lucky it was an EF2, but we rarely get tornadoes here and no one was prepared. I watch your videos a lot, so I was able to realize and get my family and extended family to safety. It was really crazy, especially since we were driving. I don't think I would've been able to do what I did in that scenario without you. Thank you for the 4 years and counting that I've been watching you, Hank

Back when I was like 12 or 13 (I'm 36 now) my parent's neighborhood got hit by a tornado in an area where tornadoes are not exactly common (30-40 minutes north of Charlotte, NC). Luckily it ended up only being like an F-1, but ho-LEE shit is it scary when you don't know that beforehand and you're watching the funnel cloud coming straight towards you! It passed directly over our house and it really did sound exactly like a freight train... I can't even begin to imagine how much louder a stronger tornado would've been! The craziest part was when we came out of the house, there was so much hail everywhere, it looked like it had snowed or something… That and all of the snakes that were everywhere! I guess the torrential downpour of rain had driven them all up from underground, but there were giant snakes absolutely everywhere. I've never heard anybody else mention this detail as part of their tornado experience so I don't know this was just unique to my situation, but either way it was gross!

We had an EF1 (baby tornado, I know😂) in 2020. Its super windy on our mountain and I always reassured my kids..we don't get tornadoes here. Then it came. My house was built in 1780. And we'd just bought it. I kept saying, "This house has stood here for over 200 years. This storm will fuck off somewhere else!!" I was so angry, I wouldn't go in the bathroom and hide. I was terrified but refused to give up my home. it was absolutely terrifying..I can't imagine a stronger one. Omg. It ripped the roof halfway off the house up the road.😫

A few weeks ago I was suffering from an extremely severe panic attack and I could not calm down, it was going on for hours and I kept trying to find a way to calm myself down so I could go to bed. It wasn’t until around 4 am when I put in one of your videos and it calmed me down enough to the point where I could sleep. I have a couple questions, Does the speed of rotation determine the speed of the tornado? Does the rotation have to be fast to spawn a tornado? Is the speed of the rotation also factored in when determining the strength? As in does a faster rotation make a tornado stronger?
@Charlestonthecool41
@Charlestonthecool41 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm not an expert, just a lifelong enthusiast. I think I can take a crack at your questions (to be taken with a grain of salt! 🙂) 1. The parent storm is the main factor determining a tornado's speed from point A to point B. 2. The processes that spawn a tornado are also responsible for increasing its rotation speed (I think simultaneously.) After horizontal vorticity near the surface has been tilted vertical by the updraft of a passing (supercell) thunderstorm, if the processes of tornadogenesis do their thing and spawn a tornado, they also stretch and constrict it, which increases its rotation. * This is a very stripped down version of one of, if not *the* most cited theories; despite over seven (official) decades of diligent study by scores of dedicated scientists, tornadogenesis stubbornly remains a poorly understood phenomena. 3. Officially, no. (In the U.S.) The overall strength of a tornado is determined solely by the damage it does per the Enhanced Fujita Scale. 3a. Faster rotation makes a tornado stronger, but the speed it moves from point A to point B is also a major player when it comes to damage left behind. For example, the '97 Jarrell Texas F5 tornado is legendary (NOT in a good way) for the type of damage it caused. What made it so devastating was its forward speed slowing to 5-10 mph right before it entered a neighborhood at its max width of 3/4 of a mile. Estimates of the time it remained over each house were 1-3 minutes; nearly everything was granulated and incorporated into the tornado, which added an effect likened to sustained sandblasting to its destructive force along with the more typical shrapnel sized debris. Which essentially turned the Double Creek Estates into a horrific, excruciatingly slow creeping blender/sander the size of the local atmosphere.

@@johncoleman6927 My pleasure! You said it, they are utterly fascinating. For me, it's an amalgamation of terror, fascination, and awe. I got bit by the tornado bug at age seven. I was yanked out of bed (and from a sound sleep) by the back of my pajamas, thrown under dad's arm while at a dead run with the rest of my family trying to reach the basement, and hearing/feeling something crash through the roof into the living room milliseconds after everyone cleared that area.(It was our massive oak tree, former resident of the front yard.) We lived in KC at the time, and found out later it wasn't a tornado, but a straight line wind event. (The 7 Jun 1982 derecho) Tornado or not, it did the trick! We live in south KC now, and the last tornado I (kinda) saw was the Lawrence/Linwood EF4 in May, 2019. It was a giant, rain-wrapped mess, but easy enough to find (and keep WELL south of) by taking hwy 56, a straight shot due west from my home in Gardner. Where are you from?
@13_cmi
@13_cmi Жыл бұрын
@@Charlestonthecool41 high speed can also increase damage. I heard somewhere that the western Kentucky tornado had winds 200+ mph on the south side. And it makes complete sense. That’s the direction that the already fast winds are rotating and if you add up it’s fast forward speed it’s way more. So the southern side of tornadoes usually should have more intense winds and the northern side less. So both ends of the tornado movement speed spectrum have more intense damage for completely different reasons. Tornadoes are pretty neat.

Something I'm curious about. Do storm chasers tend to use heavier vehicles or modify them so they have extra weight and can resist strong winds more effectively? I imagine there'd be some tradeoffs in fuel efficiency and other areas. And I don't know if the benefits would even be all that significant. If anyone has some insight I'd love to know more about the vehicular considerations.
@evilsharkey8954
@evilsharkey8954 2 жыл бұрын
I only know of two vehicles that have been modified to be heavier, and they’re both armored intercept vehicles. I believe one is called the Dominator, and the other is the TIV. Their fuel economy is dreadful, so they’re hauled on trailers to areas where tornado producing storms have been predicted and then unloaded to do the intercepting. I imagine a roll cage and maybe a more secure harness wouldn’t be a bad investment in case the car gets tossed, but being thrown isn’t the only danger tornadoes pose. They turn debris into dangerous projectiles.

The shape of a vehicle affects more than weight does. Semi's tend to tip over easily in high winds despite their weight due to being tall and having a large surface area for the wind to catch dead on. My guess would be that crossovers would be what chasers prefer because they are more aerodynamic than trucks and suv's yet are also taller than a standard car which comes in handy in those unpaved roads.

Love your videos, I live in the deep south and where I live is surrounded by trees so we rarely see any of them even though we have lots of warnings. The fun part of watching these videos is because sometimes the messages are a little hard to hear we will use the closed caption options so we don't miss anything so sudenly it spells out how you are being chased by a large burrito or something like that over 75% if the time.

Hey Hank! Just wanted to express my admiration for your videos. I value not only the time and dedication you put into chasing storms, but also the research, editing, and all the elements that set your videos apart from the rest. A few weeks ago, I was caught in the grips of an intense panic attack that lasted for hours. Despite my efforts, I couldn't find a way to ease my anxiety and get some rest. Around 4 am, I decided to watch one of your videos, and surprisingly, it helped calm me down enough to finally fall asleep. I know your videos weren't created with anxiety relief in mind, but their captivating nature truly has a soothing effect. Thank you once again for your incredible content

I have been watching your content since 2012 and I love all your videos. I gain interests in tornadoes since I was a kid and seeing your close encounters with them is just thrilling to watch, also along with the wildlife you come across as well that's a bonus too lol. Stay safe out there and look forward to more of your videos!

A small tornado passed by our house when I was home alone at 9yrs of age. It threw rocks through the walls of our house and twisted off a huge tree and threw it through our roof, fried our pump with lightning and cut us off from the civilized world for 2 weeks. I still wake up some nights dreaming of the damned thing barreling down on me or looking out on a dreamscape with 9-14 funnel clouds on the horizon! I do not know how you do this! But your cinematography/photography is simply breathtaking!!!
