CORE PUNCHING
A strong storm’s heaviest concentration of rain and hail is the core. Storm chasers often risk their windshield’s driving through the core to keep up with a storm or see a tornado on the other side. But sometimes the tornado is lurking inside the core. Punching into a core hoping to see a soggy, rain wrapped tornado is highly risky and largely shortsighted. Both times I came close to being killed by tornadoes, they were obscured in precipitation. So why do some of us risk so much to capture sloppy, often passed over and forgotten, rain-wrapped tornado footage?
DEDICATION or DESPERATION
A handful of you are aware of the immense dedication and sacrifice it takes to track down and capture these monsters. The pricey gear and gadgets, the expensive wear and tear, the endless driving day after day, the months of preparation each year, and the years of research. After all that investing, when that rare tornado shot is finally in your sites, the need to succeed can be a wicked influence.
NEBRASKA CHASE ACCOUNT - MAY 12, 2023
In the midst of a four week losing streak and another long commute, I just missed a photogenic tornado in Nebraska. Several of my friends hit the jackpot. From the notch of another storm, I was able to capture a soggy wedge before it wrapped itself in thicker blankets of rain. That sting of failure was driving me beyond better judgment and into the heavy rain for a highly unlikely redeeming shot. The adjacent winds of the invisible, tornado raked across and rocked my vehicle as I fled. Looking back at radar loops, it appeared that the tornado weakened and expanded effectively backing up its perimeter to my location.
After some deeper, internal reflection I realized I was more susceptible to the impulses of hubris, competition, and the need to succeed, then I was aware. Especially when caught up in the chase. The next time I'm in a hungry hot pursuit of a tornado wrapped in heavy rain, I hope I'll remember how stupid it is.
HERD MENTALITY
In the information whirlwind of storm chasing, It’s easy to become overwhelmed and confused. Another disoriented chaser racing by might appear confident and so you decide to follow them to glory. Then another clueless chaser starts following you and pretty soon you’re in a conga line of confusion. Perhaps this is one reason we’re seeing more and more convoys racing into potentially perilous situations. If you’ve lost situational awareness, try not to assume others know what they’re doing. You may end up following a bunch of lemmings.
I'm guilty of the above as well. I recall back around 2005 I was chasing a lightning storm in Oklahoma. Back then I had no data other than a weather radio. Storm chaser Warren Faidley's vehicle whizzed by going the opposite direction with all its antennae and I thought "He must know something." I turned around and followed him all the way to his hotel parking lot. For some reason he was quitting for the day.
AWESTRUCK
To be a successful chaser, you’re really gonna have to love thunderstorms.
If you don’t, daily disappointment and road wear is gonna cull you out fast.
When that rare tornado moment is baring down, it’s EASY for a tornado nut to become a transfixed, sitting duck. If you think tornadoes are neato on KZbin? Wait until you see one in real life. As massive as there are, these storms have a funny way of sneaking up on you. Try to keep that in mind if you find yourself gawking at one.
DUCK MENTALITY.
The most dangerous part of the storm is approaching close but all the other chase vehicles are still sitting there, so you sit there. But they’re possibly sitting there because you’re not moving. If you’re feeling its time to scamper away, trust your lizard brain rather than the flock around you.
PASSING
Passing can be one of the most nerve wracking things a chaser can do in a storm. Especially passing the sailing and splashing 18 wheelers. If you decide to go for it, keep in mind, strong winds tend to blow things over. If someone is passing you, why not let off the accelerator a bit to help them out? If your ego can handle this, you'll decrease your chances of an accident.
HYPE ADDICTION
A great way to score 5K or 6K likes is to almost die in a tornado. The boost your channel will get from your stupidity will likely outshine any calculated beauty you capture. The world that worships recklessness wants to see you die. Ask yourself, do you really want to oblige them?
For many people it’s better to be annoying than invisible. Just ask any guy blaring music or revving their engine at the gas pump.
Happy Trails

Good call on the "arm chasing the banana" In one of his videos, Hank recounted the making of his video DRIVE UNDER THE MOON-- the "arm" footage was filmed for that, but it ended up on the cutting room floor. The same arm made a brief cameo appearance in THE GLITTER TORNADO, amid all the other silliness. . .

I fly fighters in the USAF, and your ability to "debrief" yourself is critical and impressive. The debrief is where most of the learning happens. An honest, objective, no ego debrief is critical for learning and improvement. I commend you for your ability to critically assess your last chase and take the lessons learned from it. I honestly think countless fields could gain a lot by borrowing from the culture of aviation, whether it be safety, tactical prowess, debriefing, or whatever. Cheers!

Same with debrief after traumatic Events. People with high responsebility , S&R and Medical Field see a lot emotional burden. Its so important to talk freely about they feelings and what gives them anxity or gives them preasure. Also Stormchasers who come in Situations of destruction how they are not trained for or used to. People are traumatized and acting in shock. This can take a toll on you even not realizing while under the impression of adrenaline. This pushback comes when things slow down. Something i learned from Hanks fellow Friend Daniel over the Years is , downt swallow this bad emotions after traumatic Tornado Events or near death experiances. Its so important to talk with all involved about what has happend , get it of the chest. Even crying is ok , most importnat is no jugement in this situations. Everybody deals diffrent with this. I noticed too many "strong" Guys try to be bussiness a usual after Days like Rolling Fork , Matador or Perryton ... no let this sink in , meet up somewhere with other Chasers and Helpers involved who have been there and talk after such Events. You dont need to be Friends but its a huge relif talking with all who have been involved and what they have seen. Its mentaly so important , it reduces the trauma drastical. Even someone is trained to deal with this in better ways , you can be a support for the person in the situation. The feeling of not being alone is so beneficial

Your subtitles corrected 'tornado' to 'burrito' surprisingly often. Thankfully there are very few burritos as dangerous as tornadoes (although gas station food, amirite?). Really informative video for aspiring chasers; the focus on safety is hugely appreciated. Great to see another Pecos Hank video. Good to see you keep your storm chasing focus on self-preservation. As Elvis said, "Only fools rush in." Personally I think your greatest footage is at a distance. You give your audience the opportunity to really study the incredible beauty and veroscity of tornadoes and meteorological phenomena without the distraction of hearing constant screaming from the chaser or the anxiety of wondering if You're watching their final moments. Their shots are typically good for a moment and then the viewer is glad all that cocopheny of noise and panic is over. Your photography has us going back for repeat viewing and an appreciation of your camera and editing skills. Just look at the picture on your wall. Not only did you capture an amazing tornado but it also tells the story of life out in the vast plains of the American Midwest.

Great video. As a fellow chaser I can confirm that you are 100% on the money with all of these. On that Nebraska tornado, I was in the same boat as you. Missed the photogenic one earlier that day, and was desperate for something. I was on the west side of that same storm and core punched, hoping to beat it across the road. I got into the outer circulation and lost part of my bumper. It was an incredibly stupid decision looking back. Coming in from the west while the tornado was occluding like that was beyond stupid and risky. All it would have had to do was turn a bit more and I'd have been gone. Looking back on it, and watching your video reminds me that sometimes we need to take a minute and think about things before we act, rather than acting on rash, emotional thoughts of redemption. Great video and hopefully we can all learn something, and maybe be at least a bit more safe while chasing.

Why is getting a photo of it so important? Is it a spiritual thing? Monetary? Artistic? Why do people get that obsessed? Is it a dare with yourself? Just curious. @ncstormchaser8476
@ncstormchaser8476 3 ай бұрын
@@dubaiedge That's actually a very good question and one that I think is hard to answer. For each chaser it's probably going to be something different. Some it's the "money shot", others it's just the thrill of getting as close as possible. I can say that on that day I mentioned above, it was that I missed what I knew was the tornado of the year just a few hours before. So I was desperate for something that day. Something to redeem myself for missing the photogenic tornado earlier. So I pushed aside a lot of my usual safety measures in hopes that maybe I could get something to make the 450 mile drive that day worth it.

Hopefully not just speaking for myself here, but what really draws me to your videos is your storytelling - how you planned, why you made certain decisions, and what happened. Then we are learning how to critically assess our mistakes when we get too caught up in what we are doing. Love this! Not a lot of chasers I see on YT have that ability to own up to being too cocky & learning from it. I will not repeat any names, but there is one who aggravates the life out of me. Barely halfway through this video. What Hank is warning about here applies to so much more than storm chasing. My angle on this is from chasing people for twenty-odd years, not tornadoes, but complacency, target fixation, herd mentality, and hubris will set you up to get killed even driving down the block to get groceries. One of the best videos you've ever done Hank. So much wisdom and experience to pass on. Wow. A very tough field and dangerous one to get into, and this does not mention those who aren't trained and still foolishly try to chase making it even more dangerous for them. Great to see you, safe and sound.

@MikeReally No, I totally understand everything Hank was saying. I was pointing out and vainly hoping those who watch this and are thinking of chasing without any training that they think twice. I'm well aware if trained chasers like Hank who have been killed. I've been weather spotting (not chasing) since 2012. Every year we are required to attend a weather spotter training which consists training or advanced training (depending on how much training you've had and want) to continue being able to report. Spotting is simply reporting severe weather you see at the location you happen to be in at the moment it's occurring as long as it's safe to call in at that moment. We are always warned ⚠️ "Do not chase", along with part of the training explaining safe areas to be in should we encounter a tornado, what to do and what not to do. So many here in Ohio where I am do chase with no training of any kind. Chasers are highly trained with degrees with years under their belts, and as Pecos Hank has so eloquently shown us, it's frickin dangerous when they are doing it. How many problems go into chasing and things that can go very wrong. Oh no, I get it. He hasn't just chased, but he's helped people in their most vulnerable moments.

Love it, great idea and great work, Hank! That Situational Awareness thingie is what worries me when my cousin/rommmate is out and I see things getting dangerous where she's going. I have made a Mantra for her; If you see any green in the sky, turn around, go a different direction, then get bearings. We do get tornadoes in SW Virginia, NE Tennessee, and North North Carolina... yes, most likely the worst she would find getting close to the Core is hail but come on; does she really want to have to replace windows and drive home with a spider-webbed wind screen?

You mention failing to get "those shots", and the desire to compete and succeed. You are a wonderful photographer, an educator, a person with a great heart judging by your actions towards the world around you, and an inspiration. Few can claim the same accolades, so how much more success do you want? I love your work for all those reasons, plus the fact that you are NOT on an ego trip or just trying to get the super risky shot. I don't need to see those. By staying alive and bringing the world your wonderful content you are succeeding in so many ways.

I encourage everyone to do the same before attempting your own storm chase. Literally EVERYTHING about storm chasing can kill you if you are not careful and do not know what you are doing.

6:44 I like to describe tornado 'distance' as "objects in mirror are closer than they appear." The tornado may *look* far enough away, but the wind surrounding it is super dangerous too, and that is a much wider and mostly invisible area around it. And if it's rain wrapped... it can blind you right at the worst possible moment. ...god, those supercells are gorgeous though. That greenish blue glow, looking like Mako from Final Fantasy VII, and the shape of the clouds like a giant alien spaceship. To me that's just as awe inspiring as the tornadoes themselves.

Oh boy, the icy roads clip at 0:31 brought me back to June 21st of this year. I got caught in a nasty hail storm east of Denver, CO driving a rental car (a brand new Camaro; the only car the rental agency had on that lot that day). Nearly $11k in damage. Thankfully the insurance took care of it, but it still brought me back to that night watching the windshield spiderweb and wondering if it would shatter completely.

Pecos is the man that made me terrified of tornadoes! I used to love severe weather when I first moved to southern Arkansas from Southern California in my early 20’s but now 15 years later I find myself hiding in the bathroom with my dog and cat and bug out bag deep in the throws of panic as soon as my phone goes off with any kind of tornado alert ! Lmao I remember one night when my back was thrown out trying to rush me and the animal in my truck to find a shelter and the fastest I could move was like a 90 y/o ! I know the odds of getting smacked by a huge twister are extremely slim but it feels like every spring or fall they just keep creeping closer and closer!
