For those of us who prefer minimalism. 1 rod, 1 little tackle box with 2 or 3 lures, no trailers no cables no batteries no DIY, just toss my kayak inside the van and be in the water in 5 minutes. Paddle and pedal will always be the choice 😎

@@AliexFolgueira yeah but I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of the minimalism for the extra range and hands free fishing that the pedal allows you to have. With a motor comes a lot of extra weight, battery, cables, installation, etc. Then again, fishing down here is very different than what you do up there. I fish mostly drifting with the current in big rivers so once I reach my fishing spot I don't need to paddle/pedal anymore until I finish the stretch and go up to the next. A lot of times the currents and wind will toss you against rocks, stumps trees with lots of branches or under very thick vegetation and believe me when that happens you'd wish you had as little stuff on your kayak as possible. But I imagine that up there fishing in lakes or in open inshore waters I'd really appreciate the mobility and extra range that a motor would provide so it's really a situational thing

That's the good thing of the industry evolving to where it is , is that theres a kayak for everyone. Whether it's a 4,000 loaded out kayak or a 1,000 kayak , theres not a wrong way as one has their reasons for their desired way. Tightlines.

Lol..I did purchase my kayak. It's a 120 PDL. However, I picked the hybird edition with the pedal drive. Only because they make a 46lb thrust trolling motor, that fits exactly where my PDL sits. The trolling motor weighs 19 lbs. But now my bixpy J2 rudder mount motor, is on it's way. I don't like not having PDL drive with me, incase something happens with the motor. So I say a small motor like the bixpy, and you always have the PDL. That's a great setup for me. Be safe..🤟🙏🎣

As long as there are states that require all motors to be registered with the DMV (but not manual drive like pedal kayaks) Pedal kayaks will always have a place.

Pedal kayak will not die. I have had electric trolling motor driven kayaks for many years, now I just bought a pedal kayak, and I'll use it a lot more , the reason been: 1. Pedal kayak does not need registration, it's not about a few bucks registration fee, it's about convenient. In my state most water body requires all motor boats been lunched at the dedicated ramp area with inspection, sit in long line waiting for inspection is really pain in the summer busy days. Pedal kayak basically can hand lunch anywhere, this is especially useful when you camp at water front camp site. 2. More and more water bodies especially those for providing drink waters for near by city no longer allow motor kayak, it is not because the motor is more powerful as you mentioned in the video, it's about contamination, imagine the kayak capsized, the battery (may be lead based or lithium based) can cause pollution of the water. 3. I usually fish on a lake almost all day, been in a small kayak just sitting there is not good for my body, it's even worse than I sit in my office. I need exercise. Pedaling kayak is perfect way to achieve both fishing and exercising. There are more reasons that I will use pedal more than use motor, these are 3 most important reason. Thanks! Really like your video.

I have a Hobie Outback and love it, but being in my 70’s, my fishing range is limited. I just installed a Bixpy drive on the back and opened up new horizons. Max speed is 4.5 mph. To extend range I run at setting 5 out of 10, and get 2.9 mph. If I add a little easy peddling I go 4.0 mph. The drive is half the depth of the fins. Actually less depth than the rudder.

I mostly troll with my Outback, and slapped a Bixpy on it to extend range. I’ll usually go to pedals to troll, pop on the motor when i get a hit so i can reel in one fish while the gear on my second rod continues to fish. Absolutely love it. But man,….that iPilot,…that is the future.

When I was in the Coast Guard I met an Old Salty guy in a little 14' open wood fishing boat. He had oars and 15 HP two stroke outboard to propel his boat. I ask him about his boat and he said; "I first fell in love with boats and fishing when I was a young teenager. I saved up and bought a rowboat. I fished every weekend and some days after school. When I seen my first outboard motor I had to have one. But my row boat couldn't be powered easily. So I saved up and bought a small power boat and got an outboard. I spent nearly as much time working on that motor as I did running it. Soon I grew tired of working on that old outboard and got a bigger and better outboard motor and a bigger boat. I soon noticed that I was fishing less and my boat was sitting in the yard more. Then I got a family and they wanted to be able to go out with me fishing. so I got a bigger boat and a bigger motor. This boat sat in the back yard all but three or four time a year and I would walk down to water and remember going fishing and how great it was. So when I retired, I sold the big boat and bought a small boat that I could row. I'm old and can't row as well as I used to, so I must have a small outboard to get home. But I fish almost every weekend and some weekdays too. I never want to upgrade my boat ever again. I like boating and fishing too much to upgrade again." ...True story.

I have found there are different types of kayakers (paddlers, peddlers, motorized) and many of those will not try nor want to try the other options. I think a lot of it depends on how and where they use their kayaks. So I don’t think any of those categories will ever die completely. One may be more popular at certain times (partly driven by the industry and once again uses). I will say for me if I were to motorize one it would still have the pedal drive. Motors break down, batteries die and I would hate to be stuck trying to only paddle larger fishing rigs back to the takeout. Plus I just like the functionality of the peddle drive overall and the control I get from being the motor. Haha I say do what works for you and your needs. Good video.

Adding even the smallest motor of any kind requires you to register with the DMV and put numbers and registration on the kayak. If you do not have the receipt from buying it new, or a prior registration, you will not be allowed to register it and will be fined by every cop who sees you. If you pedal it, you don't need any of that.

My thoughts as you know aliex, it's to each their own.. But if you want to reach bigger water and get to a spot faster you'll go to motor. I see pdl as a recreational kayak vs fishing. I know many like the exercise and I've thought about pdl... but then on the lake like hearsay 10mph wind, with white caps, and boats causing so much wake it was not fun.. Can't imagine doing that in a pdl. My kayak 106mk did fine.

I generally agree. I have three kayaks (all paddle no peddle). I live in Iowa after moving back from Texas (I know). An Ocean Kayak BG 2 ($899) a Topwater 106 ($699) and a Topwater 120 ($899) all on sale as 2nds from Sierra Trading Post. I fish a lot of rivers. Any pedal would be constantly hitting the river bottom. Also, Kayaks under 13 feet don’t need to be registered, unless you put a motor on them. So, I’m inclined to put a motor on one for lake fishing. I can’t see myself getting a pedal. I know it would be nice to have my hands free at times, but I use an anchor trolley to fish an area and move on.

I agree that using a kayak with a motor is a huge advantage however like it was mentioned the downsides are like anything else with a motor and thats when it brakes it cost more. Not to mention if you have a battery problem or motor issue when you take it out far you are looking at a long petal back. Have to figure worse case scenario for petal drive is that you can only at worse brake your propeller where with a motor you can face many problems.

Yeah, that sums it up for me as well. My Hobie gives me the option to pull out the mirage drive and drop a motor down in there and someday I will when the budget allows, but I absolutely love the pedal drive. Pedal will be my goto when out with the family or girlfriend and we are just touring a lake, spot fishing, taking our time. But the mornings when I'm by myself and want to pick up the morning bite at my favorite waypoints, get me there faster :-)

Pedal kayaks have some specific benefits: 1) exercise 2) you can use pedal drives in bodies of water where motors aren’t allowed 3) you can use pedal drives in tournaments where motors aren’t allowed 4) pedal drives have fewer moving parts to break 5) pedal drives don’t require hardly any maintenance 6) much easier to pull up a pedal drive than trim an engine in shallows, flats, oysters, etc. 7) pedal drives are stealthier 8) cost; your points didn’t make much sense to me because you’re talking about pedal + motor cost vs paddle + motor cost. 9) as you know, Hobie drives come completely out & there’s a cassette that goes in there. No hole. The bike style drives are much bigger, bulkier and in the way. 10) much lighter weight & easier transport/setup with a pedal drive vs motor
@AliexFolgueira
@AliexFolgueira 2 жыл бұрын
1- you can still paddle a motorized kayak and get a more complete exercise 2- two is true but I haven’t encountered a spot yet that don’t let me use motors 3- the tournaments that don’t allow motors are few and will be fewer soon 4- pedal drives break just like a trolling motor, the idea of zero maintenance is not really true. I have trolling motors I never serviced yet plenty of drives I had to fix or serviced or replace 5. /see 4 6- you know that there are so many motors setups for example the autopilot 120 is way easier to pull up than any any drive there is! So is the Bixpy in the shearwater..again not a valid point. I’ll cover 7-10 in the next comment

8 cost why would you pay $1000 more if in the end you gonna put an ipilot unit on it ? I think you should rewatch it get the 120 paddle only add i-Pilot instead of getting 120 pdl and add i-Pilot and never use the drive 9. Cassette does nothing really and who takes that fishing anyways no one, in the other hand a paddle kayak only won’t have that hole

Motorizing kayaks is cheaper. If you can work with your hands you can modify almost any kayak to take at least a trolling motor. From what I've noticed watching so many videos of people modding their yaks spend a minimum of somewhere around $150 to $200 additional to the price of their yaks maybe even less if they already have a trolling motor and some recycled building materials. Hell look at that pelican catch power you reviewed... $200 Walmart trip has that thing up and running and it's still way cheaper than the high end Hobies

they'll never be dead. You fish a 2 or 3 day tourney 8+ hours a day on a river system or a grass lake, you use the motor to make your big runs and you pedal to stay positioned in the current or a paddle to go over thick grass. If you use your motor for everything for 8 hours, you gonna run the battery down. If you're camping or staying out the car, you have no way to charge the battery for day 2. You are forgetting something else....a lithium battery big enough to last full tourney day in the wind or current is $500 at least. Also as of right now, the best, most competitive kayak tournament series doesnt even allow motors during the tournament, only during practice. That tourney series has the most and best anglers, pro anglers, etc. because it is run very well; but word on the street is they are going to start allowing motors. A person with a motor has a huge advantage over someone that doesn't either cuz they cant afford it or whatever. Person with motor can make much longer runs without being tired when they get there. They can sit back and drink coffee while running to their area, while a pedaler or paddler runs a mile or two, they get there already worn out, sweaty, etc. And lastly, as for tournament anglers on kayaks-- a lot of us, myself included, will never switch from a pro angler 14. NO other kayak has enough horizontal rod storage where you can fit 12 rods in hull, beside you by doubling up the 6 rod holders. You can still get them in and out while on the water, you dont gotta pull open a nose and fight with them all inside the boat. When a tournament calls for potentially having that many rods, and you have to get in skinny water and up under trees and shit, you want the horizontal rod storage, you dont want to be fighting those rods up and down all day. That and the comfort and space for tackle, and stability on big water. A topwater 120 or a bonafide is super, super stable, but it doesnt have a deeper hull and bigger side walls like the hobie. The hobie Im fine with going out on champlain or a big lake with a lotta waves and some wind. I love my topwater, but it will not handle the waves and wind like the hobie, waves come crashing over the sides, I feel much more unsafe and like I'm going to flip.,

I have to agree with you generally with this video! I never thought I'd say it, but I just started rigging my 2018 ATAK 120 to take my NK300 hp motor. I'm moving it from the Slayer Propel 13. I bought the ATAK 120 used a few years back as a backup paddle only kayak and only used it once. I loved the layout and comfortable seat, but realized that I wasn't going to paddle the distances that I cover in my pedal drive Slayer. I was unwilling to depend strictly on the NK300 and always had my propel drive as backup. Now I have the NK300 and the paddle becomes my backup once I rig up the ATAK. I hope to have it rigged soon and expect to check out how the NK300 pushes this kayak. I am really looking forward to the simplicity of my setup when I go to foot steering and have more room for all my stuff. I'll report on one of your videos the results of my speed test.

However you will eventually reach an age when kayak fishing is too much exercise for your body to cope with. I got back from a trip today, and after paddling about 5 miles I was completely stuffed. My kayak is a 120 PDL, Hybird edition, I did recieve my drive with my boat. But they make a 46lb thrust trolling motor, that weighs 20 lbs, that drops in where my PDL would sit, just like how the Native mount there drives. Plus I now have the Bixpy, with the Gravity rudder kit. So both are on my kayak, but I'll use the bixpy to get from spot to spot, and then troll around or pedal around. I'm in my late seventies. I pedal for exercise. I catch more fish trolling from my Outback than I ever did paddling and casting. Motors will not replace pedals until solar panels mounted onboard can recharge them fast enough to keep them running all day. If that happens, the only reason I might buy a motor is the maintenance of the outdrive is not something you can predict. It's hard to tell if bearings or cogs in the pedal drive are wearing until you are on the water and need them. I love the Outback's stability. If a motor compromised the VCG it would be a game killer for me.

I have caught 12 good size Stripers this year from 19-26 inch size on Old Town PDL 120 . Pedal drive system is good work out your leg s and I Also ride road bike 🚴‍♀️ 600 miles already this year. So if your fit stick with pedal or peddle kayak s . If you’re 60 and older yeah go with motor kayak or motor boat

first video I’ve ever seen from this guy in my recommendeds. Great content. Also, very interesting, I have never seen that name spelled that way before. Not trolling, just super curious as to which countries spell this version of his first name this way? Anyways, thanks for the interesting video. I’ve been wanting a kayak for a long time. Still saving my$!

I see what your saying Alex! But a slayer propel 10 is hard to beat. Lightweight compact easy grab and go but you already know this cuz your a master of yaks. Certain body’s of water like rivers or creeks you need a peddle drive! Especially reversing hands free to help pull a fish out of cover. I respect where your coming from tho! Coming from me a guy who wants to put a bixby on my yak for longer faster spots! Great video! We’re done here!! Lol

Is it better to put a motor to the front or to the back? Can I fish standing on a kayak with a foot pedal as people do on a bass boat?

For safety purposes & tournament reasons I prefer all in paddle, peddle, & power. I think it comes down to how serious one is on the water. As a tournament angler I could get by just on power only but I do see & use benefit in peddling, as it's in this quieter mode in slews (quieter water) one does not want to scare fish away & thus using a quieter peddle drive allows this like a Nucanoe pivot drive. Sure like anything the costs will be there but that is apples/oranges to look at upon the overall seriousness in purpose of use in a competitive sport of angling. You got to be methodical about it in all seriousness on this type of analogy if one expects to be Great in the craft they are putting time in. Again it goes back to how serious one is & is there a need & purpose , for me anyways. Gotta also think what if that electrical goes out & one is 6,8,10 miles from ramp/truck. I'll pay the extra to cover all basis & not be stuck & end up miserable. The problem too is people don't realize certain things until it's too late, then their frustrated because they didn't think & know certain outcomes (before the fact) & their they are stuck, wet, tired & looking to trade in what they just bought. Hopefully this passage helped someone out, I hope so. Tightlines.

I'm trying to figure out what motor to put on a Jackson Big Tuna. Was hoping there's something convenient with a brushless motor that don't use a lot of power but can move the kayak good. Anything with integrated battery packs that last or you'd easily recommend? Feel like a boat battery would sure weigh the whole yak down and be a risk to lose if the boat flipped. I'm not sure how many AH A person needs. How many miles can these lithium combos go? Is a wide kayak like a Jackson Big Tuna going to be too much to get a lot of range?

For me, the entire idea of a kayak is the minamalist, lightweight, small, close to nature aspects. As well as the exercise. The last thing I want to do is have a bunch of gadgets motors and batteries adding weight and complexity to it. If I want all that, I'd just buy a john boat.

I can understand if you never leave your state to fish or visit one other state, but I regularly fish 3 states and rather than registering it in every state I'll use the xi3 at home and use the pedal drive for out of state traveling. Yearly non resident fishing licenses can add up pretty quick, then adding multiple boat registration fees for a kayak on top of it? I'll pass, saves me more money for gas and other fishing crap... In about 6 years when I'm 100% vested with my union's pension I plan on quitting and doing a cross country vacation in my teardrop trailer. My xi3 will most likely stay home and I'll just be using my pedal drive. Just makes more sense to me, no point in paying to register in a state for a year when your only going to be there a week or two... Although I will admit that having a kayak with almost every state registration sticker going down the side would be an pretty cool, expensive but cool. Maybe if my fishing bait didn't say "not for human consumption" on it I could afford it... 🤪

motors maybe be the new trend and your first option but having a pedal drive is a good 2nd option/backup incase your motor has a issue out on the lake because no one really wants to paddle a load kayak.
