Flour is the ground up seeds of wheat (for wheat flour). This is a multi step process. 1) the wheat is harvested 2) the wheat is made up of its husk, germ and body and is transported to storage. 3) from storage it is transported to the mill and put into silos to dry 4) in the mill, it is “rubbed” or “hulled” which removes the husk 5) for whole grain flour, the wheat with germ is then sent from the huller into a series of rollers which crushes the grain (seed) and the 5) goes between the “stones” which are actually large metal wheels that has grooves in it that tear the crushed grain into tiny little bits it the drops into 6) the fine milling wheels where these tiny bits get milled into flour, ity bitty bits of grain. This produces Whold Grain Flour. There are other added processes for removing the germ after step 5 above and there is also some steps after to “bleach” the flour. It all depends on what kind of flour is being made. Cake flour for instance may go through additional wheels.
