This is such a helpful video. I especially appreciate the detailed explanations of why to do things in a certain way (e.g., the naked phase so the child can realize what’s happening and make the necessary connection) as well as the description of your own experience. Thank you!

Is there a way to train them without them being naked? I don’t really want to do it that way. What is the alternative method? Pull ups? Any advice would be much appreciated! 🙏🏼

I understand the resistance for naked time, but I think the main thing here is that your child can very much see/feel/hear/etc. the sensation of peeing and pooping. Prior to this, diapers were keeping these obviously sensations from being noticed. The connection of experiencing the elimination and then being shown what to do (put onto the potty) happens easiest through naked time. It is also MUCH easier for you as a parent as you won't be changing into new clothes every single time they don't make it to the potty and you also aren't wasting time pulling clothes on and off each time you try to get them there in time. Also, it makes it easier for you to notice when the pee/poop is happening. There isnt a lot of time!! Lastly, it can make it very frustrating for your child to be having their clothes ripped off and on so frequently during this new phase and big change in their life. Removing this extra annoying step can make them much more cooperative! Alternatively, maybe having very light/loose undies instead of naked time would work better for you if you're still not on board! 😊 But pull ups are sooo similar to diapers, children do not know the difference unfortunately. Good luck, you're an awesome parent and you've got this! 😉

My 24mo old will hold his poop till bed time. I haven’t seen him go for number 2 in so long. When we sleep together he will not poop for 2-3 days until he gets his privacy at bedtime or sometimes nap time. Not sure how to catch him & his cues. Otherwise he is now going to the potty for pee, he doesn’t ever ask me to go, I just bring him every hour and if we’re home, we can have days of zero accidents.

Sarah, do you have a tongue tie? My daughter had one, and I didn't want to get it released unnecessarily...but she was having trouble transferring milk. So ultimately it was needed.

In our experience the 3-day method (or kick off as described here) was way too much pressure for our first born. I will never do that kind of thing again. It worked a lot better when we just let potty training integrate with our normal lives, like bringing their potty with us to the library or park. We had a lot of accidents for about 6 months. I think temperament is way too often left out of the conversation. I also think, while it makes sense our grandparents were trained before 1, there have been cultural shifts in approaches to childhood that make it more complicated than just aiming for a goal that worked in the 30s. I'm doing elimination communication with my second which has been really great and I'm hopeful it will make the overall process easier this time.

My daughter just turned 3 and started to show interest in using/say that she needed to use the potty at about 18 months and had success most nights before bed. Then she started to get really resistant to where she would not go near the toilet or her little potty. It became a real struggle, because we are both strong willed and pigheaded😂. Our pediatrician suggested leaving it alone and reintroducing a couple months later at her 3 year checkup. My daughter actually brought it up and started using the potty again a bit. She’ll use it like a pro at Grandma’s house, but at home we’re locked in the power struggle again. I don’t know who’s got more anxiety about it, me or her. If anyone’s got any tips, I’d love to hear them. We’re even doing prizes every time she uses the toilet successfully, and that’s not motivating her anymore, either.

Question/Wondering if anyone else has dealt with this: My daughter is 2.5 and probably since she was 1.5 she would poop only when given a glass of milk before nap/bed time and never without it. Here recently she has started to poop without milk specifically but still only while eating lunch/snack. It's very odd to me and I mentioned it to the pediatrician who has never heard of any kid doing that before. I'm not sure if this would be helpful or detrimental to potty training, but I'm tired of the diapers so I will see how it goes. Thanks for the great video!

Naked Phase: days 1-3 Pants, No Undies Phase: days 3-10ish. We had to pick big sis up from school on day 5 so pants were required lol. Absolutely had an accident in the car seat that first week. Would definitely had them naked when home at night the first couple weeks because it was easy and they could put themselves on the potty - building some independence. Out and About Phase: through 3-5 weeks (can go longer if you wish). We were sure to take the tiny potty with us everywhere. Add underwear phase: after 1st month Self-initiation phase: for us this started and was going well regularly 4-6 weeks in for our kiddos who started training at 19 & 22 months each. Nighttime Phase: we started this for our oldest a little before her 3rd birthday and she was dry consistently overnight without midnight potty breaks after about 3-4 months. Haven’t done with Bo yet!

Any advice for stool withholding? I tried to potty training my 2.5 year old, he was doing amazing at peeing on the potty but started stool withholding. It got so bad that he ended up asking for his pull-ups again and we've regressed completely but his stool withholding is still really bad to the point he will scream and try to hang upside down off the sofa to prevent going. He used to open his bowel 1-2 times a day before attempting potty training and now he goes every 3-4 days still in his pull up and he seems very distressed every time.

My daughter is doing the same thing. Shes doing so well with peeing and potty training, but waits until she has a pull up on at night to poop. If we didn’t do a pull up, then she would refuse to go and get constipated. Any advice is welcome!

Developmental delays can sometimes provide extra challenges, but in no way does it mean they can’t learn! Remember, your grandparents were likely potty trained before their first birthday. If they aren’t yet verbal, it is going to depend more and more on you being consistent and building schedule. Think about it like you’re training yourself. You may also find some benefit from using signs instead of words to help communicate what they are learning. Take your time. Be consistent. Be positive, and just keep putting their butt on the potty whenever they go.

Do we still look for the same cues if a child is developmentally delayed?

Do you think this method will still work for a no verbal toddler? Our little boy just turned 3 & we casually put him on the potty to create a habit but I don’t think he gets it yet. Also he can’t verbally tell us if he has to go so we plan on using gestures or pictures

How do you teach a boy to pee vs #2? Both sitting? Or stand to pee, sit for #2?

My son sat on his potty for pee until he was tall enough to stand independently for the toilet. He was 19 months when he potty trained. So it was a while before he was tall enough for the toilet.
