Thank you so much for your informative, and yet down to earth videos. I, like many others, really appreciate them. I'm still working on my undergrad, but am planning on medical school. I'm a nontraditional student going back after having three children of my own. I think I read somewhere in the comments someone mentioning the challenge that working in peds might pose as far as being around kids and babies everyday with the possibility of that becoming annoying. I could be wrong, but it seems to me one of the even bigger challenges when deciding to go into any field where you are dealing directly with children and minors in general can be working with parents. Prior to going back to school, I was working in the special ed department of a local high school, and before that I used to run a home daycare while I stayed home with my kids, and if there were ever any complaints it seemed to be in the form of that dynamic, so its definitely something to take into consideration. That being said, working with children can also be some of the most rewarding jobs ever in really intangible ways sometimes. You have the potential to make a huge difference.

According to medscape, 1/4 female physicians are only working part time. Many females go into pediatrics. Their reported salary doesn't ask whether they are part or full time employees.

During your rotation, was it optional to watch/assist with the circumcisions? I feel very strongly about this issue and I don't think it's something that I would be happy doing. I am also considering neonatology, which of course requires me to be a pediatrician first. Do you know if it is absolutely required for pediatricians to do circumcisions?
@sdrthompson9 жыл бұрын
I think it is a requirement in every program to do a certain number of circumcisions, but as a medical student, it's mostly considered a bonus to be involved in this particular procedure. I would say that it is something that pediatricians offer, but you do not have to perform them if you don't chose to once you are in practice.

I disagree, what about emergent circumcisions. I.e. 16 yr old who yanked his catheter out, was previously screened and it was recommended for circumcision and dextrose, and nacl wouldnt reduce his paraphimosis, if he didnt get it, he would have lost it.

Thanks for your videos...I've enjoyed them over the last few months. It sounds like you've been attending school in Kirksville...does KCOM have opportunities to do rotations in St. Louis as well? I am interested in attending there in the next couple of years, but my wife and I are living in St. Louis right now, and it would be great to be able to come back...thanks again!
@sdrthompson10 жыл бұрын
Walter Diehl Yeah, my two best friends from med school are in St. Louis rotating right now. In fact, a huge chunk of our students end up there for third and fourth year so there is a good chance of making that happen. KCOM is awesome by the way, you are so secluded in that small town that you have few distractions and tons of time to dedicate to school.

Hey Student Doctor Thompson. I am currently a pre-med sophomore and was wondering what kind of extracurriculars you did as an undergrad (hospital hours, shadowing, volunteering etc..). I have been pretty much spending all my time on getting good grades and have virtually no extracurricular activities at this point. Am I behind schedule? Also, when do recommend starting to study for the MCAT. I have friends who started studying sophomore year, but I don't see how this is possible because they haven't taken all of the basic science classes that are tested on the MCAT. And your videos are awesome! Thank you!
@sdrthompson10 жыл бұрын
skipyjohnjones I didn't start studying until my last semester, and even then I didn't really study hard until after I was done with class, then studied for 2.5 months. Extracurriculars are good to start right away, and have some level of involvement over a period of time. It is never too late to start, but the sooner the better, don't worry about putting in too much time all at once, let it fit your schedule but dragging it out over a longer period is good to show continued dedication. Hope this helps, I will try to make some vids about this, great questions

Where did you get that $177 thousand figure? I'm assuming that's for general pediatricians, right? I'm interested in neonatology, pediatric gastro, or pediatric EM, but I bet that list will change once I get to medical school!
@sdrthompson10 жыл бұрын
Mairead Bartlett I got it from salary.com, and I'm not sure if that is totally trustworthy or not but it sounded about right for general pediatricians. It really is crazy how much your mind can and will change through medical school, I was 100% set on ophthalmology before starting school and now, though still on the list, it is no longer number one, we'll see though, good luck to you

Can you tell me when in medical school you should have decided on a specialty? Wondering about match and application? (I just got in to medical school)
@sdrthompson10 жыл бұрын
David Porter Congratulations on getting accepted to med school! Your question isn't easy to answer. Some people come to school KNOWING the specialty they want to choose, while others don't have a clue until right before applications to residency are due. I think it is healthy to keep an open mind up through third year. Have it narrowed to 1-2 by the time fourth year starts so you can start audition rotations or choosing your electives in the field you want to go into to gain maximum exposure before applying. I'm still trying to figure out what I want, but I started medical school KNOWING 100% that I wanted to do ophthalmology. Now I'm leaning towards primary care or general surgery. We'll see :0

hey Thompson, I need ur help in choosing ipad for my medical school. can u suggest a good ipad model. or should I go for some other tablet ?
@sdrthompson10 жыл бұрын
noble thomas Hey, I'm a big fan of the apple eco system. If you are starting 1st year, any iPad will do really, I like to get the best processor available at the time because many new apps come out that depend on the newer speeds. The iPad air 2 is the one I would get. That can be expensive though, and the majority of apps used for medical school aren't too processor intensive. Unless you are in 3rd year, in that case I would lean towards getting an iPad mini because it fits in your pocket. Even then, I would personally have a hard time choosing a mini over the iPhone 6, if you are carrying your phone anyway, the iPad mini might get used less than you think. Hope that helps, good luck!

mace124 Congrats, I've heard great things about your school. The first two years were hard for me, it just seems like the book work will never end, then its frustrating because you learn sooooo much only to forget a ton of it after the test. But... third year will be here before you know it and you will be learning everything over again and again until it sticks! Best of luck to you!

And do you have to go to Pre-Med to go medical?
@fevenayana693110 жыл бұрын
You can major in whatever you want as a college student. However, you need to take 'pre med' classes, which are basically the pre-requisite courses like biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, and a few other classes along the way in order to prepare yourself for the MCAT (entrance exam) and to apply to med school. Hope that helps!

No Nelson's Essentials??Why??
@sdrthompson10 жыл бұрын
Panagiotis Pan I knew I was forgetting something! Yeah I used Nelson's but less frequently. I was in such a time crunch with only doing a 4 week rotation that I had very little time and a lot of material to cover. It would be worth mentioning that It is much more comprehensive than those I mentioned, just a huge book to get through if you're in a crunch.

I ruled out other things because working with children is a lot more challenging and complex. And I love a good challenge. Also because you get to learn about a lot more things. I'm still in highschool but it's soon coming to an end. I also really enjoy being with children. Nevertheless, I still have a decision because I would want to work in peds cardiology. Which is a very big decision to make and a lot of commitment.
