Nick was very actively involved in the studio arrangements. I know there is this cult of "just Nick and his guitar," but that's not what Nick's vision was. Nick brought in school chum Robert Kirby to compose the string arrangements for Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter and had to lobby hard because the record company had doubts about student at Uni taking on the task.

Personally I think it’s the best of the three albums, as you can really hear how talented any singer songwriter is when that’s their only accompaniment. I love listening to others the same way, like Joni Mitchell, John Martyn, James Taylor etc.

As a guitarist for 25 years now, I can honestly say that the timing on the guitar here is genius. To think that he was barely of drinking age when he did it is amazing. I know his story is a sad one - but he achieved a certain immortality. Not sure if thats any consolation to Nick.

Same here. He's at his best when it's just him and his guitar. I hate that he was convinced to let them do more with production in the studio to try and get him noticed. Thank God he insisted on doing Pink Moon his way before passing. And thank God these demos were later released by his family.

As a nineteen year old, I find it incredibly sad that a young man with so much talent, eloquence and intelligence as Nick could feel that he had helped nobody with his music. I have listened to Bryter Layter almost non stop these past two weeks, his lyrics and guitar grow more and more impressive with time, and brings me so much joy. I played Man in a Shed from his first album on my show on the student radio station at my university, in the hope that if he, somehow, knows that people are still playing his music, that he realises just how much he is appreciated and how much his music does help people, and perhaps that some more people my age could realise what an incredibly talented man we lost far too soon. I just wish I could tell him how much I appreciate his music.

This might be the best acoustic song ever recorded. This version with just the guitar. Nick had such a far-away quality that nobody else has ever achieved. This influenced me and is still one of the prettiest things I've ever heard.

Just Nick, his guitar and the family reel to reel recorder. There is a magic to his supposed simplicity...but it reality his uncanny perfect playing , vocal timing and hauntingly thought invoking lyrics and melodic songwriting are about as close to perfection as one human can come.

I'm eternally grateful that this version exists. It's a shame that Nick was so pressured to allow the studio to add all of unnecessary production. I can't believe someone in charge of producing that album heard nick play Hazey Jane and decided it needed changing. The song was perfect the way Nick intended. That decision made many tracks on those first albums age poorly. Theres way too much going on with all of those instruments added. Thankfully, by Pink Moon, Nick had put his foot down regarding his insistence on keeping the sound close to the style he envisioned when writing it. He was do right. More right than he could have imagined because when you listen to Pink Moon today (the track and the album) it seriously sounds like something that could have come out today or at any point in the last 15ish years. It's way ahead of it's time. Sadly, the opposite is true for some of Five Leaves Left and most of Bryter Layter. It sucks cause it isn't Nick's fault at all. I read and heard in interviews that the label/producers wanted that sound, with the intention of making Nick stand out amongst his peers in the folk music scene. Their reasoning was that he'd otherwise get lost in the shuffle. Whoever it was that had the authority to make that final call was clearly not a fan of folk music at all, otherwise there's not a chance those songs would be so heavily altered. And it's a real shame. What was written as perfect, classic folk music with an impossibly perfect finger picking technique, amazing lyrics, and a perfect melody was bludgeoned and then re-shaped into something with a sound/style direction very reminiscent of cheesy Adult Contemporary. And that is a travesty. Cause few musicians in the folk music scene could ever come close to Nick. That says a lot considering folk music is played by the best of the best in terms of musical talent. All of this makes me realize how grateful I am that Papa Drake: 1) had all that recording equipment in their home which gave Nick the oppertunity to record himself a lot 2) made a copy of some of Nick's recordings to give to some fans 3) later had those demos professionally re-worked and cleaned up for a compilation album.

Listening to this demo I like it a lot but This is one of the few songs of his where I think the orchestration on the album really helps bring the song to fullness - on the others it kind of messes them up - I like this demo but it sort of lacks the colour of the album version .
