The kiss with Peeta on the beach was very real. She realizes in that moment just how much she truly cares for Peeta. In the book she says "I realize only one person will be damaged beyond repair if Peeta dies. Me." However she has so much going on that like she told Gale earlier in the movie she can't think like that, figure out what she wants. That is one reason I like Peeta better, he recongnizes that and lays off while Gale keeps pushing her to say she feels as he does.
@shorkelili
@shorkelili Жыл бұрын
Completely agree with you on Gale being pushy. Its understandable why he sometimes does and says things, but overall he doesn't seem to respect certain boundaries when it comes to Katniss. He wasn't in the hunger games, so he can't understand the amount of trauma Katniss has, even when she tries explaining it to him he ignores it because he knows she's the revolutions symbol of hope. If that opening forest scene with them was Katniss and Peeta, the conversation would have gone drastically different. Peeta really is just a walking green flag, and Gale.... well, he's Gale. Especially further in the serious, lots of red flags💀 He's so clouded by his viewpoints that he fails to see how hard it is for Katniss. She made this relationship with Peeta so she could survive, and all Gale can do is complain lmao. like sir, if you really love Katniss you should be worried about her mental health and her happiness, not your relationship

It's been so long since I read the books but Finnick and Johanna had more than one reason other than being forced into the games originally, to go along with this plan. The Capitol forced Finnick to prostitute himself for sponsors. Then they tried to force Johanna to do the same, which she refused, so they killed her entire family. Hence the "there's no one left that I love", line. (If I remember correctly). Not to mention Finnick was only fourteen when he won the hunger games.

The great thing about Plutarch's character is: the first time you watch the film, it can seem like all his conversations with President Snow are about him suggesting new and horrible ways to torment Katniss. The second time you watch the film, you realize that in each conversation, he's cleverly coming up with excuses to keep Snow from killing her at that very moment. Even his decision to put her back in the Games is actually a strategy to protect her: if she's once again a Tribute from her district, then she's protected from harm until the Games begin, which buys the revolution more time to plot her rescue. And even once the Games begin and Snow is calling for her blood, Plutarch stalls and says "let her get her hands dirty first."
@michelle1794
@michelle1794 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, with rewatches, Plutarch's intentions are clear as water. There happens to be a deleted scene where he sneaks into the room where the prompt for the 75th Quarter Quell is stored and changes the original envelope for the one with the Victors prompt. Not even Snow knew about the prompt being changed and when he read it he thought that it was just right because that would mean Katniss would die anyway at the hands of the Victors and he would get rid of her in an efficient way without raising suspicion from the Districts. I also think that Wiress and Beetee telling her about the force field in the training room was actually Plutarch's idea so she would know how to identify them in the arena, which he put there so Beetee could use its electricity to destroy the dome (which Katniss ended up succeeding in at the end). Also, when he ordered to spin the Cornucopia, he was actually helping Katniss because he saw that she went after the tribute that attacked them (Brutus I think it was?). The moment he sees her on the water he tells them to stop it and he says "let's see if they can tell time now" which is just an excuse to say out loud so the rest of the gamemakers don't suspect of his reasons. He was so damn intelligent the whole time, everything was on purpose. He designed the whole concept of the clock and the hourly threats just so he could sneak in the lightning in the design, thus providing them of the electricity they needed without arising suspicions. In the book I recall that in the presidential party, while he dances with Katniss, he points to his wrist watch several times in hopes Katniss will get the clue about the design of the arena. So damn smart, that Plutarch.
@oq1106
@oq1106 Жыл бұрын
@@michelle1794 I'm glad they didn't include that deleted scene though. Its to my knowledge not in the books who made the decision but Snow would be pissed af if a game master again changed something without telling him (literally the bs Seneca pulled), so I don't think its a good angle to go with. The way they imply it in the movie, with Plutarch pitching it and Snow signing off on it seems more realistic to me than a version where Snow goes "suprise me, because that worked out so well last year". But I always missed the subtle fuckery they pull in the books, where Snow takes out this old-ass envelope pretending this is a "long decided anniversary special" instead of something they came up with like last week specifically to target Katniss.

Katniss loved them both. The difference is that she was “IN LOVE” with peeta. He was who she felt attraction toward. She talks in the books about how she feels the fire/butterflies in her belly when he kisses her. And right before the games she was glad Gale would assume it was all an act so she didn’t have to feel guilty about hurting his feelings bc she liked being with Peeta. The victors were trying to protect Peeta just as much if not more than Katniss. That’s why Finnick used CPR and the woman came out of hiding when the monkeys attacked. They all knew that him surviving was All kitniss cared about so that was their priority. Even at the end, when they are on the plane, they ask if she will be the mockingjay and Haymitch says he doesn’t know. She is going to freak out when she finds out about the boy(peeta).

fun fact! at the end, when Katniss picks up the seringue, she’s actually on a mission to go kill peeta to make sure he wouldn’t be tortured by the capitol. the movies are great, but they definitely dialled down how unhinged katniss became because of trauma and ptsd.

This movie had a lot going for it. The script was more accurate to the book, they got a new director so the camera work was better, the budget was much higher, and the creative plot of using the victors as tributes ups the stakes for the games. Was so great seeing it come to the big screen for the first time.

agreed. i see some people criticise the next movie because of it's slower pacing and less action packed storyline, but tbh that's why i like it so much. it's such a stark contrast to the other movies and shows the reality of a war. it's dark and bleak, and katniss is dealing with so much trauma. it's great storytelling and helps the buildup for the final movie

A neat moment in the book that wasn't in the movie is that when Katnis and Plutarch were dancing he showed her watch (to hint her off at the clock behaviour of the arena) and for a moment a mockingjay flashed on his watch (hinting off that he's undercover), but they decided to leave it as more of a twist in the movie. Also not sure if it was mentioned in the movie, but the first quarter quell had districts chose their tributes instead of being randomly picked and then the 50-th had twice as many tributes (so 2 guys and 2 girls per district). And the 50-th is what Haymitch won, and iirc he actually didn't kill anyone, survived till the 1v1 and then made the last person throw an axe at the arena forcefield which then bounced back and killed her. And then the 75-th is mentioned how everyone is pissed, even folks from districts 1 and 4 which usually train till 17 and then volunteer (and are most commonly the winners), since they were promised that they were safe after they won the game.

One thing I love about these movies is the complexity of each character and the relationship between Katniss and Peeta. You could say she's faking most of the time, but Katniss is a very blunt person, she struggles with hiding her real emotions, so a lot of these 'fake' acts lead to a lot of real emotions surfacing. In the first movie, they stuck together to survive. Since they were in such a traumatising environment, you could see they truly did have a bond together. Then of course when she's back in district 12 with Gale, it creates a distance between the two again. I think in this movie, Katniss truly begins to fall in love with Peeta, even if she may not understand that herself. She wants him to survive, even if she doesn't, and one could argue it's because she sees him as the hope for the rebellion, but I beg to differ. I think she truly sees a beauty in this boy, and she deeply cares and wants him to be okay. I'm not going to spoil the next two movies, cause it's genuinely a masterpiece in storytelling - so I can't wait for you to see how the characters grow and how the relationships develop

just wanted to let you know that Katniss never was in love with either boys really or rather she didn't have time for it. in the books, sorting out her love life is always her last priority. She's always saying that she never wants to get married or have children in a world where they have hunger games so choosing a guy would be moot when she has real problems. Gale was her bestie/hunting partner in crime who only let her know he was in love with her after she won the games (by being super salty about her relationship with Peeta). she went along with kissing him a few times to satisfy the inner rebel in her who resented being forced in a relationship with Peeta and because she didn't want to lose him as a friend after going through this traumatic event. Peeta was someone she feels she owed a lot so she kept an eye on from time to time prior to the games, then they had the fake romance in the first game that formed a bond of sorts where they wanted to protect one another, understood one another more than anyone else because of the games, and held some affection for one another but it's overshadowed by her resentment for the forced relationship. eventually, during the victory tour, they really start to bond without cameras and she comes to really cares about him. She sees him as the one truly good person who survived the games (which is why she wants him to survive), and it all comes to fruition during their last kiss which for the first time she describes as a kiss that she actually wants! It's the first real kiss with either guys, where she's not just going along with it for the camera, to go against the capitol, Or to not hurt Gale's feelings. So that's what's really going on with the love triangle that isn't really portrayed so well in the movie!
@Carolinagirl1028

I largely agree. However the beach kiss wasn't the first kiss she wanted. The second kiss in the cave in the first games she said "This is the first kiss where I actually feel a stirring inside my chest. This is the first kiss that makes me want another. In fact in Catching Fire she reference that kiss when they kiss on the beach, she says "I feel that thing again. The thing I only felt once before. In the cave..." On some level her attraction and pull to Peeta began in those first games. However once she plans to die and no longer cares about feeling pushed into a relationship by the Capitol she isn't as inhibited about discovering those feelings.

Some really big context for the "stop looking at me like I'm wounded" line that is missing form the movie, is in the books Peeta lost his leg due to the games. Katniss doesn't mercy kill Cato until the next morning so because she and Peeta were hiding on the cornucopia all night his leg got infected and he lost it. That's also why no one wanted him to go back into the games, he was at a severe disadvantage. The movie had to come up with with different ways to make some important plot points happen that in the book are all because of his loss of limb (ex. Mags running into the fog because Peeta couldn't keep up vs Peeta being too sick form the fog in the film)

As to the relationship with Gale and Peeta... the movies don't get too much into it, but D12 has two classes--merchants and miners. Gale, a miner, resents the merchants generally, and Peeta is a merchant. The competition over Katniss doesn't help.

I liked the two Mockingjay movies a lot. As you saw, the rebels rescued Katniss to the Mockingjay Amd it won’t be simple or easy. I understand the decision to split the final book into two movies.

One thing the books make clear that I wish the movies did a better job of portraying: Katniss wasn't in love with either Gayle OR Peeta. She didn't have time or room in her head for romance. Even before the games, she was busy keeping her family from starving while trying to keep her mother from a total breakdown, and basically raising Prim. And, in the books, the way they feel about her just confuses her. She doesn't understand why they're focusing on Katniss when there is so much outside of themselves that needs to be done. She loves both of them, the way she loves her family, but she almost thinks they're silly for caring about her that way.

So one of my favorite things you miss in the movies - the mockingjay is a combo of the mockingbird and a jabber jay- jabber jays were a mutt created by the capital during the rebellion to spy- the rebels found out and used it to feed false information so the capital discontinued their use and expected them to die out. Book quote(context- in the book her friend Madge gives katniss the pin; her moms twin sister wore it in the arena): “But Mockingjays were never a weapon," said Madge. "They’re just songbirds. Right?" "Yeah, I guess so,” I said, But it’s not true. A mockingbird is just a songbird. A mockingjay is a creature the capitol never intended to exist. They hadn’t counted on the highly controlled jabberjay having the brains to adapt to the wild, to thrive in a new form. They hadn’t anticipated its will to live.” Then later: The bird, the pin, the song, the berries, the watch, the cracker, the dress that burst into flames. I am the mockingjay. The one that survived despite the Capitol's plans. The symbol of the rebellion.

I may be the minority on this but all four films are incredibly done. I see a lot of people talk badly about the camera work in the first one but the camera work was done that way for very good reasons. The books are written in first person. When books like that are made into movies, that first person narration tends to become a disembodied voice (usually the main character) telling the viewers what they should instead be shown. What the director did for the first Hunger Games was translate that first person narration with the camera instead of having Jennifer break the fourth wall. So inside the District, when we see how people are forced to live, it's shaky cam to give a sense of not being in control/ being worried/having fear. When Katniss goes out past the fence to hunt, the camera steadies the farther she gets from the District so we realize she feels comfortable there, she can relax. She smiles freely. The shaky cam comes back with a vengeance when the Capitol plane flies over and she and Gale have to hide, indicating the sudden rush of fear at being caught where they're not supposed to be. I love the camera work in the first film. It forced me to pay attention. To this day, the first Hunger Games film is the only film I've watched six times in a row because there was (and still is) so much to find and learn in the small details.

Tom holland seems lovely and what I’m about to say should not take away from how lovely Tom seems, but josh Hutcherson just has a special place in my heart. Both for his role as Peeta in the hunger games movies but also for being such a vocal member of str8 but not narrow back in like 2010 before it was “good for publicity” to be an ally. He also starred in “the kids are alright” and was an early public figure I followed that was so vocal about how being gay is normal. Lots of love for that kid. I remember my mind being blown when he said in 2013 "I would probably list myself as mostly straight, "Maybe I could say right now I’m 100% straight. But who knows? In a fucking year, I could meet a guy and be like, Whoa, I'm attracted to this person….I think defining yourself as 100% anything is kind of near sighted and closed minded” There weren’t a lot of young “teen heartthrobs” who were like “yeah being gay is normal and also I could be attracted to men one day who knows”

When you said, at the beginning, that there were a lot of ways this could go at this point, I'll bet you never expected the outcome you got. I don't think Katniss can be counted on to go along with a plan. She's a wild card and she does what seems best at the moment. And that's not always part of "a plan." And ultimately, I always thought her unpredictability was something that only Plutark understood and rolled with. Maybe the reason some think this was the best one is because this one had some of the biggest surprises. But there are some big surprises still coming in the last two.

Mockingjay pt.1 suffers a bit simply from being a part 1 but still holds up as a great movie as does part 2 imo

I’m parked eating tacos. I should go home and eat them there. But no, here I am, in my dirty car, with one tire that needs air eating tacos de carne asada because I don’t want to wait to watch a grown man react to Catching Fire.

I have autism and i think the hardest hyperfix ive ever had was my Hungergames phase. I was _obsessed_ with these movies it's unbelievable. Imo, all though book/movie 1 has better Hungergames itself, book/movie 2 def explore the characters more. 1 was more focused on the setting and the plot/lore, which is logical for the first in any series, but 2 just developed on ideas the fans now were familiar with in such an incredible way while and adding new elements (more other characters you care about; the more intimate knowlegde that Katniss is one of many traumatised victims; a better look in a true dystopian hellhole (snuff out hope, etc etc); and much more). My personal fave is thereby 2 cause it's just so so well done. its so hard to write a follow up to something which is already mindblowingly well done, but Suzanne Collins absolutely aced it with HG2! And the movie specifically is just perfect. Yes, some scenes from the books were added out for time reasons, yet all powerfull messages remained. The acting performances were astoundingly amazing and i just adore these movies and books so much

I think the gripe with Mockingjay is the Harry Potter effect of splitting the last instalment into 2 parts. The plot is great and both parts are necessary, I just think it could have been consolidated into one movie just fine

I think that it's really understandable to have two parts, i think that if both was in one movie it would be so much to only one movie of 2 hours
@courtneysdances
@courtneysdances Жыл бұрын
@@lararodrigues1360 I think a lot of scenes were unnecessary in both though so they could have taken the best hour from part 1 & 90 minutes from part 2

The issue with the next 2 movies is that the source material is very difficult to follow, they tried their best but it still fell short. One of those moments where if you read the book first then watch the movies you will be instantly disappointed.

#3 is good but not as much action, mostly set up for the finale. The last movie is great the only thing about the last one is that it is the last one! You should read the books, so much more to everything.
