Getting to the finish line first is the most important thing. If you hang back and lolly gag the the entire race, you SHOULD be able to be moving well in the stretch. But that doesn't do ya any good, because well, no prizes for "moving well in the stretch". Hope that helps.

Man, if they had let him go just a bit sooner he would have taken the race. He got stuck behind horses in the backstretch and had to run wide, but man did he kick in then. A little Zenyatta ish.

If a horse went full bore out of the gate for the first half mile and had a big lead then faded to last, ya don't hear many say "Oh, man, but did you see him? He was way ahead after a half mile! If the race were shorter, he had it in the bag!!!"

Troy Carlson that is true. A horse that does that is in the wrong race though. They may be fast, but if they can’t hold it, they don’t win races, they are just speed horses that tire to give the distance horses a break till the end. Some front runners have a ton of stamina. American Pharoah for instance was a front runner who could hold the front for the whole race which I find quite amazing. Having a late kick however, is a huge gamble as to how long to hold back the horse, and how long it will take him to find his stride. War story here has a huge kick at the end and and really it’s his jockey that failed him, just like Zenyatta vs Blame. I admire a horse with that strength reserve at the end that can cover that much distance. It’s a lot of precision and a lot of power.

I just can't watch this. It's so unfair that not all horses can be happy and loved by their owner. It's just sad to watch. Horses need love and help. That's cool, if you use it correctly (which they aren't in my opinion) but as they are being used here It isnt good for the horse. Their skin isnt as thick as ours even! Though they are strong they still feel pain.Personally I'm against horse racing if you dont do it with care

The whips they use have the ends encased with thick foam rubber. Virtually all the racing whips used these days were designed by a retired jockey, Ramon Dominguez, and are called 360 Gentle Touch whips. Google it. You will see close photos of them and how they are designed. There is also a video here on YT where the 360 GT is discussed and a guy takes the "whip" and actually whips himself with it. All they really do is make a loud popping noise and not much else.

You are obviously uneducated and you nothing about horse racing. The "whips" as you call them make a very loud pop, the jockeys are not allowed to hit a horse in the flank area and if they can prove them being hit anywhere besides the shoulder or rump, the jockey is fined and suspended. Most make sure they use the crop correctly and even now there are new rules about how often and when it is appropriate to use during a race.

Absolutely, had horses racing at G-Stream a few years back, the races are fixed, the nominations for the races are also fixed and suspect that the jockeys ride according to somebody´s order, but not the trainers. The tracks surface is a disaster, basically you are racing on a beach, there are deep and hard spots, some spots almost like quicksand. My trainer´s horse broke a leg stepping in a deep soft spot during a breeze, killed on the spot. never again gulfstream.....
