You definitely need to give it another listen and pull up the lyrics. There were clues all the way through. "In a dark brown voice, she said Lola." "I can't understand why she walked like a woman and talked like a man." "Girls will be boys and boys will be girls. It's a mixed up, muggled up, shook up world except for Lola." and the big one, "I know what I am, and I'm glad I'm a man, and so was Lola."

Even the description of the setting foreshadows the twist at the end. The champagne tastes like cherry cola, they dance under "electric candlelight"...nothing is as it seems. Especially Lola.🤣 Such clever lyrics. I love the subtle line at the end about how the protagonist had just left home a week ago and had never kissed a woman before. Because even after his encounter with Lola, he still hadn't kissed a woman.

One of the fun things about art... doubly so for stories and music... is that we perceive it with a lens honed by our own experiences. What we get out of it can be very different than what the artist had in mind or was inspired by at the time. It can be a jarring experience when we realize our own perception is so far off from artistic messaging. Or even those times when art is crafted in a way to be undefined and reflect many different messages - to discover other interpretations that differ from ours. But this one... this one had a clear message. It was missed.

The line is 'Cherry Cola'
@UmpireStrikesBack3 ай бұрын
@@kingcosworth2643 The original lyric is “coca cola” they were forced to change it. Here is an explanation: Written by singer Ray Davies, Lola is about a relationship between a man and a “woman” who turns out to be a transvestite. But it wasn’t this gender confusion that worried the BBC. The song was banned for including the words “coca-cola” which was against their policy on product placement. Davies had to interrupt the band’s American tour to fly back to London to re-record the lyric as “cherry-cola” for the single release.

Hey, being born in ‘85, it took me years. 🤷🏻♀️ You grow up just singing along with the chorus.

"I know what I am, and I'm glad I'm a man, and so was Lola." The genius of that line is that although it could have meant that Lola was also glad this young guy was a man BUT what it actually meant was that Lola was also a man.

Definitely needed the lyrics playing on this one. That last verse: "Well I'm not the world's most masculine man But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man And so is Lola"

The kinks had to change the bit about Coca-Cola as it’s first reference was the powder ! Once that was changed the single would be played on air!! Same as Frankie Goes to Hollywood, the song Relax..but that did get a ban on BBC Radio 1 🤯☺️

But Lola could be glad he (the singer) is a man. The wonderful English language which does not demand that every thought and action is specifically appealated to one specific person at any one time, allows for all British Farce and comedy. (The man with the wooden leg called Albert ,- really what was the mans name ?. etc)

Ha. Lola is a man. Lyrics from last verse "Well, I'm not the world's most masculine man But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man And so is Lola" Trans men and women have been around for a long time. Soho (London) clubs were one place that trans people could hand out in some safety back in 60s.
