Great video. I have one vfr1200f and for me it's a keeper! I don't agree on cruise control and throttle... for me that's the character of this bike. That's what I want when I bought it. I agree ...I dont have a problem with the "aggressive" throttle at all. Coming from a 5th Gen VFR 800fi I think you need a steadier hand and because of high gears finer clutch control . I personally don't need a cruise control. Again personally always found the vtec vfr800 has dated quicker than the vfr800fi non vtec. The 2010 model mirrored the look of my 1998 model. Good review well done.

Agree on the cruise control, that could have been done pretty easily. However, on ride modes, I don't agree. I believe that all these additional electronic controls takes away your own sensibility en feel with the bike. Just drive with more sense. The throttle response is indeed twitchy but that can be solved by an ECU tune. That is just caused by these stupid regulations ;). Honda does deliver heated grips, my 2013 model has it and was an option. It is a fantastic bike and definitely a keeper for me. Main downside for me is that is not so economic with fuel while touring. No issue on highways, but touring is not very fuel efficient, strangely enough. As my rear shock started to leak, I replaced it with a hyperpro and that is a major difference. I don't understand your problem with gearing but that is perhaps more related to way of driving and roads where you can drive. I also drove a VFR800 a couple of times and, though I prefer my 1200, I found that you can use the power of the VFR800 much more. Giving the 1200 some throttle rockets you to such high speeds that, here in Netherlands, you can hardly use it (but it is so much fun).
@pegasusmotorcycletours5 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing. The 2012 andup models had a more tame delivery than the 2010. I don't mind a ride mode because my bike is so Jerky now after the reflash. As for the gearing, it's really geared too high. One has to be riding over a hunder mph to utilize the 6th properly. It's a bike that gets one in trouble.

I have just completed a trip across Australia on a VFR1200X. I'll give more details later, but in summary: Good: - highly reliable - strong motor that loves to sing, but also keeps going down low - Feels lighter than it is in motion - Stock headlight is the best I've ever had, and my '12 V-strom 650 set the bar pretty high - Smooth on the highway, even with crash bars that inevitably increase vibrations on a bike - 2nd to 6th gear changes are nice. Clutchless shifts are a joy Middle: - no cruise control, but aftermarket unit works well (MCCruise are great) - Copes with panniers and top box fine, though fuel consumption climbs a bit Bad: - not very economical even when being conservative, and tank capacity is not great. Will drink like a fish if you go hard - stock pegs are small - gets very hot in city traffic - On/off throttle in city is choppy 1st to 2nd gear change is hard to do smoothly - Ergos feel a little cramped for a big bike (though I am 6'6") - Stock windshield sucks. I use a Givi Airflow and I still get wind noise problems. Handlebar size and movement prevents fitting of a decently wide wind shield for my shoulders - You WILL feel the weight when pushing the bike around parking spaces.

Bit I'll be keeping mine for as long as possible. Good review, thank you. I own a '96 4th gen VFR in metalic blue, relatively rare, most are red. I recommissioned that bike and it is almost perfect. The V4 is awesome. However I cover most miles on a GS... Not very original, I know. I hate the looks of it, but it is very, very comfortable and, mine being an oilhead, simple to maintain. On the VFR I had to swap the valve cover gasket of the rear cilinder pair... An absolute nightmare. I am thinking of swapping the GS for the VFR 1200 cross tourer. Any boxer twin will never be a match for a V4...

I have a 2010 red VFR 1200F. I agree, the lack of cruise control is a big miss by Honda. As you say, the range is also poor for long distance touring. I have no issue with throttle control or gear spacing. It has so much torque, it feels strong anywhere over 2K rpm. I did add a module to give it full power at all rpm in 1st and 2nd gear. The power limit was really annoying prior to that. The brakes are awesome! I had the rear shock rebuilt with a valve package and stiffer spring, which really improved the handling. The looks alone are enough to keep me from selling mine. It's great for a weekend curvy backroad trip. I also agree about getting amped up when riding it. I feel invincible on it, which is a great feeling, but can lead to increased risk. I couldn't have it as my only bike, but it sure makes a great member of a 3 bike stable.
@pegasusmotorcycletours8 ай бұрын
I agree. The looks alone make it worthy of garage space. I might consider springs in the future as well. One solution oddly enough to my throttle woes was to go back to my old old gloves. I'm still enjoying the bike.

@@hyperthunk The module came from Bazazz. It tricks the bike into thinking it's in 3rd gear even in first and second. Only downside is that the gear indicator reads 3 in 1,2 and 3. Doesn't bother me too much. I mostly use gear indicator to know when I'm in top gear.

Hey bud. Just come across this - great video and review. I don't know if you've still got this bike, but I wonder if the fueling issues you're having are due to the flash (you mentioned it was flashed previously), some flashes remove the power limitations that honda built into the first few gears. I know a few people have used a PC-V to smooth out the throttle response on these... I've owned a VFR-750 (1992, last of the gear driven cams) which I loved, then a '12 crossrunner (VFR800 Interceptor frame and engine, with an upright riding position and bars) which I use as a commuter and for 1-up touring. Got my eye on a 1200 for 2-up touring, love the looks. Will have to test ride and see what I make of the fueling, thanks for the review anyways!

I don’t think Honda can be beat by the Bavarian K1300S. As a current owner of a large BMW bike (different model which I have for sale) it’s time for me closing in on 70 years young, to want to just ride with zero worries. BMW yes they’re fast and look good, but boy are they ever needy kids and expensive to own. So finicky, parts availability, electronics and electrical problems, brake ABS units failing, cam chains lifting off, transmission failures, etc etc. BMW are painful to deal with, and their current decision to not allow owners access to repair manuals and tooling to force you into their stealership for work is bad, very bad for business. Stalwart Beemer owners are dropping the brand in favour of our Japanese manufacturers. I for one would never ever own another BMW. But each to their own. Thanks for the video and taking the time to produce it.

I know exactly what you're referring to. I own another BMW, the F800 GT Sport tour motorcycle and I hate the fact that I have to waste my afternoon to go to the dealership so I can pay them 50 bucks to delete the service code that pops up every year just so they can take money from me. My sidecar rig on the K 1300 also has service lights for the blinkers and for the tire pressure monitor which of course have been affected when the sidecar was installed and car tires were put on. I'm stuck with facing these lights and nothing can remove them and it's so incredibly annoying. I knew about the tools and the code reader, but I did not know BMW also protects repair manual information it doesn't allow that to go public. That is incredibly frustrating. And I think it should not be legal. If you want a motorcycle you have to have a right to repair it yourself. Thank you very much for your input I appreciate having very experienced Riders like yourself on this channel. Please stay tuned for my review of the 800 GT. Cheers.

I was tossing up between the Honda VFR 1200 and the Yamaha FJR 1300 and I'll now go for the cruise control version of the FJR 👍 I live in Australia where our governments treat motorists like cash cows using the police as revenue raisers for their political masters so cruise control is essential to save your licence here... also the gearing you mentioned sealed the deal for me.

Not sure how fair you are being by commenting about aggressive throttle response when your bike has been reflashed. My vfr12f is standard and the throttle response is tame and gradually builds. Yes, it is a very fast bike but totally manageable. With kind regards, J

Thanks for participating in the conversation. I like how your profile picture goes perfectly with your critique :) I think the flash made it overly aggressive to be quite honest. I spoke to Ghull himself over the phone and he told.me they don't do that anymore due to emission laws, so I'm glad I have it done. According to him it was Really beneficial thing to do for the sub 2012 models. They made a few changes in 2012 and up and especially with the dct so I think there is alot of difference between our two bikes. Cheers. Nik

I felt the ZX14 not having enough power and I did a common modification removing the secondary throttle plates that stay closed under 6k RPMs, I read that the VFR as well is restricted under 4K RPMs in 1st, 2nd gear. If you want to feel a truly "aggressive" bike I think the Yamaha FZ09 / MT09 is the answer due to its power to weight ratio the bike really bucks hard like a horse. On that note you should ride fast horses down in Rosarito to feel the power and lurchiness, bikes and horses have a lot in common and I really like riding fast on horses as well. I rode my ZX14 from Reno Nevada down to Ensenada Baja California, I only had to really relax on the throttle during rain but besides that that thing is definitely a missile.

Sell it. Keep the next to impossible to find luggage. Buy a 2014+ vfr800 Deluxe. Has everything you want minus the cruise control and the luggage clicks right on. And they sold it in pearl white. So win everywhere. And in my opinion looks way nicer than that bike. Plus has about a 250 mile range.
@pegasusmotorcycletours9 ай бұрын
Had a guy already ask to buy just the luggage for his 800 - nice to know they are inyerchangable but the 800 never appealed to me physically. It looks small, sharp - this one is a much larger bike physically. It just doesn't do it for me but I know it must be great to ride.
@Subaruktm9 ай бұрын
Man, get your facts straight, the tank was reduced from what? You’re talking about the first model in the second model traction control came and they made a slightly larger tank. What you mean it is that is smaller tank than the Vfr 800. Breaking are from CBR 1000 fire blade só as the mirrors. You can put quick shifter on it. You can change how your feet stay on the bike with those special racing kits, and you can change how your hands get into the bike. Few bikes have so high quality construction as that one. Do you know that the more electronica gimmicks they put into those things the more risks you have to your life. If you want to drive, so smooth, and you want a sofa and two wheels, the answer is called Goldwing.

And yes, that thing looks amazing in white. I believe the the rims came in gray, so those were probably painted or powder coated. Which lights do you have in the suspension? Take care safe travels.

Yes, the tank was reduced from the 800 by I believe 4 liters, then increased in later 1200s by .5

Nice review. Honda completely missed with this bike. The range is just too low for the touring side but the bike is just too big/heavy for the sport bit. It should have been a VFR800 with more engine and I think it would have sold in big numbers. Such as a shame as it could have been so good!

The big problem with Honda is, they never improve their products. If sales are not what they expect, they just throw in the towel and discontinue the model. They do it time after time. A good example is cruise control. With the exception of the Gold Wing, Honda never put cruise control on ANYTHING! So out of touch with what modern riders want.

I feel like most of your points against this bike are moot and mostly just not applicable here. The bike is like 20 years old. Even the goldwing back then didn’t have standard cruise? I’m not sure who would have that leaves you expecting such an option?? BMW? Either way simple fix. Your complaint about the responsiveness i also find a bit annoying as you continue on about the shaft drive lol. Of course it’s responsive. You’ll have to get used to it or make it less responsive but who does such a thing? Today the big complaint is throttle lag- just can’t please the masses. You’ve left out some points about this being the first bike optioned with Hondas DCT. This is as a huge tech leap and this bike was the showcase. The single sided swingarm- was this a first for Honda? This thing was way ahead of its time yes but don’t dismiss it’s actual age and the fact that it’s still 100% relevant among todays bikes. A huge feat. Grab any other bike from this year and see if it keeps up. I say it’s amazing and I’ve always wanted one. Will have one
@pegasusmotorcycletours6 ай бұрын
Thanks for participating in the conversation. Goldwings from 20 years ago in fact came with cruise control (and were using shaft drives in the 70s - Ive had two fisrt gen wings and have reviewed them here if younare curious about the technology introduced.. So this bike didn't do anything new there). The responsiveness has nothing to do with shaft drives, its more about the ignition system and mapping so I'm not understanding the connection you are pointing at there. I didn't have the dct version so I can comment but by 2012 when it came out, the throttle was made better and traction control made available - another key thing all sport tourers need to have in my opinion. It is indeed a fantastic bike and a great bang for the buck, sp I actually still ride it. If you are ever I. SD reach out and Take a spin. Cheers. Nik

I’ve got a VFR 800, 1200 and an ST1300. Sounds to me that the ST would be better for you after listening to your list of grievances at the beginning. Trust me the ST can hold its own. For me my 2015 800 isn’t as good as either.

For some reason the lines of the st never appeared to me. It looks to utilitarian. And associated with police which isn't bad since cars tent to move out of the way. But I've heard this suggestion before and will have to check into it. Thanks for watching.
@myz06rocks4 ай бұрын
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I don’t disagree. I sort of felt the same way but the ST will absolutely grow on you. I’ve taken it on long cruises, dragged the tow pegs around corners (carrying full luggage), ridden at the speed limit and other times double it. It’ll make you a believer. I’m sure. Prior owner of the ST was my father and ironically he only gave to to me because at 76 years old it finally got too heavy for him to handle in parking lots. He said the same things to me about the ST as I’m saying to you. LOL. i was equally as skeptical !

Wow ...I took time tk make a constructive comment response to the video & it disappeared 😊 My most important point was.....if your bike has had ECU reflash changes or other tuning it is not representative of the factory VFR1200F models. Also 2012 model deliver power differently. I have ridden a 2012 VFR1200F it was powerful but smooth. I have also ridden a K1300S. As for looking back whilst distracted and what happened after.....Sure the bike was a factor but the bike should not be dangerous if ridden well. I agree with another reply here......2014 VFR800 onwards might suit...but maybe try a 2012 VFR1200F running standard tune 1st. Thanks 😊
