I attended this Free Press Book Event. I thought there might be few Trump voters there but I doubt I was the only one. I was surprised that neither Peggy Noonan nor Bari seemed to realize that a Free Press audience would be mixed politically. Some anti-Trump sentiments were applauded. It was not surprising or upsetting to me but I was not expecting to have that feeling of people speaking as if no one present could possibly support Trump. The Free Press is wonderful and I enjoy hearing the variety of ideas. Peggy Noonan thinks Trump's supporters have an Illusion that he cares about them. She believes he only cares about himself. I believe he also has "A Certain Idea of America" and he is willing to go through a lot to achieve that idea.

This is the smartest conversation I have ever heard between two conservatives EVER. As a poet who writes about the American Experience at the center of my work, I have learned a LOT rhetorically from Peggy Noonan - who could resist her gorgeous turns of phrase about the promise of this country? But I have disagreed with her on almost every political initiative to bring that greatness into full fruition. If every Republican I ever met was as high-minded and erudite as the two of you are and as concerned about the well-being of this country as you both clearly are, I might one day vote for a Republican candidate. Stranger things have happened on planet Earth. If there is a group of brilliant women GOP members like you that gathers regularly, please tell me where we can have martinis or tea together. I want to ask you a bunch of questions. Seriously - if the Republican Party all sounded like you, hoped like you, and believed in the dignity of each American as you seem to do, I’d feel a great deal of hope for this country’s future. Where are we meeting for drinks or tea? I’ll be wearing pearls.

16:10 I have to say that I was more than a little disappointed that Ms. Noonan did not take the opportunity to correct the misconception that she was the author of the famous line at the end of the tribute to the Challenger astronauts. "... slipped the surly bonds of Earth ... and touched the face of God." are from the poem "High Flight", written by John Magee in 1941.

Here are two people who have been wrong about every single major issue from the last 30 years- from Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria, to NAFTA and the financialization of the American economy. And here they are, looking down their noses at people who have gotten all those things right, but didnt meet their high standards of elitist superficiality. These two LOVED George W Bush. And Dick Cheney. And unlimited free trade. And foolhardy wars. And here they are.... still pining for the days before their high minded superficiality prevented them from thinking critically about actually important issues, and finding the courage to stand up for reality and truth.

Thank you both for a wonderful conversation. Peggy Noonan is an example of how to conduct a conversation in great style. However, that emphasis on style sometimes comes at the expense of not focusing enough on substance. It’s refreshing to hear Peggy recognise that Obama’s great style of speaking should not be confused with substance. That lack of depth became painfully obvious during rally appearances for Kamala Harris when turned out to be too shallow and banal to be able to fill in her vacuousness. On the other hand, it appears that Peggy too easily confuses Trump’s abrasive style when he performs in public with lack of substance. He makes all the valid points on a range of different issues in a way that irritates Peggy and Bari and a lot of others. It can’t be an accident, whether you call it depth or not. Also, are journalists that gullible that Trump’s friendly personal demeanor would make Peggy incapable of doing her job as an objective journalist? Apparently, they are, just recall how all in Washington crooned over Hamid Karzai’s “flowing emerald green robes” when the guy visited the US. Bari - “grab women by ..” was not Trump’s rhetoric. It was a vulgar comment said in private that was recorded and leaked to the press. A proper reaction to a schmuck who recorded this conversation and then leaked it would be to say that is not a what we should be discussing. What’s next, installing a peep camera in a toilet and leak that recording? Thank god Trump’s adversaries stopped short of it, but you should be able to distinguish a locker room banter from a campaign rhetoric. Don’t get in the mud with people who in the past eight years violated each and every norm of decency in an attempt to take down Trump “by any means necessary”

She said "bullsh*tter," calling up a popular narrative among columnists in the Trump era (the whole "difference between being a liar and a BSer" argument)--she wasn't randomly or casually swearing, and she's also not a politician. And I'm quite certain she isn't referring to curse words when she laments the debasement of our national discourse. She also never made any blanket assertions about Trump like the one you've attributed to her--she qualified everything she said with "my read on him" and "I think" and "from my perspective," etc.

She explained the divide between the protected and the unprotected. Peggy clearly sees that Trump is the protected but has the capacity to portray empathy and understanding to the unprotected, but she firmly believes that it's an act he puts on and even believes until his interest and protection come in conflict with it. I agree with the assessment. She sees the political class, journalists, technocrats, businessmen , the administrative class, and all the various affluent social elites all to be protected and insulated from the consequence of their actions and beliefs.

I read the Saturday columns the last 7 years where she continuously tried to ride the high horse and now she has to make herself relevant given that the country did not agree with her high-mindedness and decided to trust a man who they genuinely feel is on their side. She stating that Trump is only selfish is further symptoms of her TDS and I don’t know what facts she has to say that (which she must apply to all politicians including her beloved Reagan).

Bari , you might be the best interviewer working today..and Peggy remains an elegant classical journalist. I respect you both very much and I enjoyed your conversation. However, I feel you both are such a part of the "in crowd" , Peggy for decades and Bari a recent inductee, that you are missing something obvious . You touched on it , when you brought up Trumps character flaws and chequered past , but you missed the big point. While Peggy is correct the majority of those who voted for Trump are well aware of who the man is, she is wrong in her conclusion that most voted for him out of their blind belief he cares about them. What a clear majority of voters were motivated by was to "throw the bums out" . The bums being everyone who has actively or tacitly allowed such degradation of much of American life and status. Fed up with the continuing farce that is the Federal Government, the highjacking of once revered institution, and the legacy media that protects and perpetuates it and its denizens, the crime and filth in their streets and hyper focus on micro minority communities and issues of skin color while ignoring real issues that affect a much of America...they just hired the Tony Soprano to clean up the joint. Yes, some furniture and faces will be broken, but they are willing to pay such a price. Trump understands this and he also understands he has only one term to reshape America back to the shinning city upon a hill. This explains his cabinet choices, including the course correction with Matt Gaetz. There is no time to waste on petty battles when there is a society to save from self destruction.

I don't share these concerns about the cabinet. I think the top positions by loyalists make total sense for the moment. Even if they're there only to articulate a pro-America appeal to respect the institutions. What you see as a crisis of dignity, I see as a serious attempt to restore credibility through transparency or at least a posture closer to the people. To hell with how the opposition feels about it. Ignoring the feelings of the opposition is a MAJOR reason the base went Trump over DeSantis. You do get that right? The slogan was "FJB!" The victory isn't won without making the Democrats feel absolutely fucked. This is absolutely about a respect for the institutions you're just getting it backwards.

Peggy's observation about the condition of Lafayette Square (the park right across from the White House) is also true about my formerly safe, upper-middle class neighborhood in CA south SF bay. I'm afraid it's also true about our country.

The transformation of politics and journalism goes through cycles; when the decision is made to go to war, the first act is to manipulate public opinion into supporting it (truth is the first casualty of war, and the war starts when the decision is made to have one). Peggy Noonan is really good at concealing the evil. I remember when our warlord accomplices in Afghanistan locked a huge number of people into cargo shipping containers to make them ALL die of thirst. She said let’s not dwell on it,instead we should just walk on by and it will be forgotten. Evil needs disguises and Peggy has served that role (and that master).

Peggy Noonan and the Free Press should watch new documentary, Behind the Looking Glass at Lime Soda Films and do a piece on the "idea of America" that they never report on, the women who escaped a suddenly untenable marriage when a husband "transitions" and demands kink. Do it, ladies.

I listened to about 30 minutes of this episode yesterday, and left a brief comment on Spotify regarding Matt Gaetz, due to character limits. Now I would like to remind Ms Noonan about several incidents that clearly demonstrate asymmetrical justice, up to and including the death of our newly elected (Thank God) President. The Fani Willis and Nathan Wade fiasco of a case in Georgia, that merely amounted to a cash grab by the prosecution to provide $$ for vacations together. The E Jean Carroll civil suit about an alleged sexual assault in the public setting of a high end New York store that occurred back in the 90’s. Over $80 million was awarded to crazy E, despite no credible evidence or testimony. What a joke. How about Letitia James & Fat Alvin and the fraud case against Trump, in which he allegedly overvalued property to procure a loan from Deutsche Bank? Well, Deutsche was repair, on time, with interest. They not only were not harmed by the Don, they made a fair & reasonable profit. Again, what a joke. Finally, let’s talk about the job the Secret Service did on the days leading up to, and the day of 13 July 2024. Trump was shot through the ear by a gunman who was a mere 140 yards, on an open and slightly sloped roof, from the stage. The shooter, a puppy at 20 years old, managed to get to that location with a long gun, a ladder, and a range finder. How? How could the front runner in a US presidential election be so recklessly exposed? And how did this get acquire the motive & equipment necessary to nearly complete such an assassination? Someone, or several people on the inside might have provided coaching, as well as material assistance. This one is Beyond Suspicious & Fishy. How is any of that “normal”, Peggy?🦉

Great guest. Very thoughtful and I think her take is dead on multiple times. I do miss the days of a more civilized politician. I never thought I would, but I voted for Trump this election. His administration has advocated for some reforms that I really like. After 20 years of getting poorer and more unstable I will take a change. Hopefully they can bring meaningful reforms that help the working people.

"To me, he hides nothing." -P. Noonan This is a shockingly arrogant and ignorant statement. Nobody who is a good negotiator shows everything. Peggy herself recounted the story of him coming up to her saying, "Peggy, you're the greatest." or something like that. Does she really think he put all his cards on the table and revealed everything? Could she have predicted that response ahead of time? She herself admitted no. The pretense to understand all about the man when clearly she doesn't is disappointing.

When she tries to dichotomize the idea of tearing down, she misses the point that the Left is tearing down but the Right is resisting the tearing down and wants to repair that which has been torn down and rebuild it. Thus the “again”. She misses the idea of conservatism.
