This is my favorite song and my ex of 14 years got to keep our cd. I have searched for what feels like forever for this version. No other version would do. I knew it the instant the music started after 3 years of not hearing it. My soul is at peace now ❤

@Lauren Bagley Yes. One of my favorite songs too. This version has long been known as the best. I know once you hear one version, you get attached to it. I don't hear many with two solos. My personal favorite is from Dick's Pick 29. I had the cassette in the 80s. That one also has two solos and in my opinion is better. Plus you can hear piano. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnTcm6uiiceclbOIhis also has another favorite of mine. Brown Eyed Women.

So, cool, brother, I was 7 having soccer practice in the field next to this madness. We asked the coach, who are they, he said "Jerry Garcia, its like a rock opera" (first time I heard the name J. G. lol)... Sure enough, I went on tour at 17 years old from 1987-91 and then 154 shows later Im 53 fkn years old already... Peace, Jerry Garcia ✌🏼

Growing up in New Jersey had it's awesome aspects. Partying at the shore, Hitting the Delaware River Water Gap area on a hot summer day, and all the fine rock shows that the tri-state area attracted. This show was absolutely one of the high points of my teen years. My sweet girlfriend and I chilling on a blanket through the long day, and the Grateful Dead coming on as the sun set. Like a miracle. I thanks God for this band, they have enriched my life beyond measure. The Grateful Dead aren't just the BEST at what they do, they are the ONLY ones who do what they do!

I woke up this morning with this song in my head and found this one, which I´d never heard before. As soon as the first notes started I began crying uncontrollably, not knowing why. I had to listen again to realize it was the going to Fennario line that struck me..made me remember that we are all on a journey together, all going to the same place in the end. Anyway, even more incredible...after the second listen i focused in on the video and the date - 9/3...today is 9/4 and I woke up with this desire from during the night. Somehow, even though I wasn´t at the show, I feel like my spirit was there and remembered...wow, just wow, what a morning. Thank you Jerry 🙏

I recently got this version with Dick’s Picks 15 Englishtown 9/3/77, which I highly recommend!!) and this is indeed an incredible version. Between the recording quality, Jerry’s vocals and solos, and the interplay of the whole band, this is just the Dead at their best.

I too, was there - it was maybe my second, or third GD show - and like so many other attendees who have posted - I parked about 3 miles away, and got separated from the guys I went with! LOL! I think half the folks there can say the same thing! No cell phones, huge crowd, horrible port-a-potty situation - but my oh my what incredible versions of Peggy-O, Looks Like Rain, Bertha, and the other worldly Mississippi Half Step. Dick had no choice but to Pick it. And although I agree that picking "best " versions of any Dead song is an inexact science - 37 years later, the quality of Englishtown is unquestioned, not only by those of us who were in the crowd, but by those who weren't. It was our Woodstock, and I truly believe this legendary concert paved the way for the arena and stadium shows the Dead regularly played on the east coast every summer until the end. But this . . . . . this was 4 plus hours of lightning, caught in a bottle . . . . .

I’ve turned many people onto the Grateful Dead over 4 decades of my life on this bright, blue ball just spinning spinning free. MANY of them would say to me, “oh I hate the Grateful Dead!” Then we would proceed to laugh, have a few drinks, hit the bowl and I would play some Dead without them knowing. Almost without hesitation, they would say, “ this is fantastic! Who is this? Their limited little minds would be blown when I told them. I can’t help but wonder from time to time, if the Dead had a different name like “The Lollipop Ice Cream Adventure Brothers Band” how many more zillion fans they would have had. So many people were closed minded and turned of by their name. It makes me sad to think of all those people that missed out on a true American treasure. 😎

This was my first of 210 Dead shows...........I went in not getting them at all and left a totally changed person. I made my way crawling over people to get near the front. When i got there for the last 2 sets, thats when i heard the magic that is The Grateful Dead. Slow ballads where you could hear a pin drop and rock-n roll thunder as powerful as any. Many stellar versions in 1977. It was a strong year for the song, obviously this being a great example. For personal reasons I lean towards Boston May '77.

Bryan, That "Touch of Grey" video was shot at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey,CA.Myself and 5 friends who grew up in upstate NY but now lived far and wide...decided to hook up for the Monterey shows. We all made it,caught a great show, and have stories that can't be told here. The big ugly is that we left after the show was over....and just before they started shooting the video!! Then again,we were in our late 30's and had toooo much fun that day. Jack

I was 7yrs old and a VW bus parked 3.5 miles from Raceway Park as I was mowing the lawn( yeah kids learned how to mow early those days). They asked how to walk to Raceway Park and 2 days later they returned, covered in dust and smiles…. Fast forward to college and got the cassettes of the show and immediately understood why they walked so far to the show…

Coming back to revisit this fine day. I had the extreme pleasure of being a stage hand at Englishtown and was right behind Keith for the whole show. Words cannot describe what a special day that was for me. Observing the interactions of the band members and the impact of the crowd on them was a trip, not to mention making eye contact with Phil during He's Gone!

Isnt it funny how classic songs played in their original version has been covered differently but other or new artists to show how diverse the songs cud be… The grateful dead did that everytime thwy played their songs. Different each time. AWESOME

I was born the year before this show. And the only time I ever wish I was born or lived at a different time..involves the dead...and the more free days of the u.s. It's 2018 and without effort u r constrained constricted and conformed to a horrible existence............ if not careful..

Lived in East Brunswick. Didn't go to the show as I was 12 with no means. Got an 8 track of the show from my cousin who went, from Union College. Went to Englishtown every Sunday for the flea market and tried to recreate the show in my head for years afterwards.
