Not gonna lie, hearing the MGS1 Encounter theme again is always a delight. Pekora playing so cautiously after just CQC running through hordes of guys in MGS3 is certainly giving the entire game a different feeling already. At least the confusion of the plot points stays the same. Thinking Anderson died due to saying too much is actually quite interesting. Indeed, the Darpa chief in this game was retconned to be Sigint from MGS3. It's kind of depressing that Kojima connected these two, considering he only exists to die (and for a cheap twist later on). I dont think it was ever properly explained why Decoy Octopus even was affected by FOXDIE. lol

It's because Decoy Octopus injects the blood of the people he mimics into his own body, I believe.

@@pekomains Yeah, I got that part, but that technically doesn't explain how a virus like FOXDIE that is coded to someone's DNA is supposed to kill him. I don't believe he replaced his entire bloodstream with Anderson's blood. ^^;; I always thought Ocotopus was the wonkiest of FOXHOUND's members. And that's saying a lot with Psycho Mantis in their ranks lol

I don't think FOXDIE was programmed to kill the DARPA Chief. It was meant to kill the members of FOXHOUND present on Shadow Moses, as well as the Armstech President, but the DARPA Chief was a good friend of the Secretary of Defense, so I don't think he would have wanted the virus programmed to kill him. Being a member of FOXHOUND, Decoy Octopus was one of the primary targets of FOXDIE from the start.

@@hornet65 No, if FOXDIE was programmed to kill Foxhound then Psycho Mantis and Vulcan Raven would have died to heart attacks. I'll give you Sniper Wolf, because she was too far away to get infected(even that is arguable during the torture scene), but the other two were too close to not get any. As far as the lore goes, Naomi injected Snake with Foxdie that was coded to kill Baker, Anderson and Liquid. The first two to shut them up and avoid them spilling the beans and the later obviously as he is the ringleader. But because their DNA is so similar it should also have killed Solid... just happens that nanomachines and Foxdie have a really weird effect on each other.

Honestly, considering a blind playthrough of MGS1, pekora is surprisingly competent , especially against the bosses. It's amusing how she played on easy with all the other games but powered through this on normal.

You know, it just occurred to me, but in hindsight, 17:57 is the damndest piece of foreshadowing regarding Decoy Octopus-why would the DARPA Chief working on the project NOT know all the failsafes? Looks like Pekora’s instincts knew something was up, but FOXDIE acted up before she could get any further.

9:37 little uncommon knowledge. Looks bad ass & super tactical, in reality those things were nightmares. Really heavy & bulky for a suppressed pistol, mainly due to the can & the old school laser sight in front of the trigger guard. Most operators couldn't stand them & were typically only used by sniper teams where maintaining stealth was priority. That said it was a proof of concept & helped pave way for what's used in operations today. 🌠The more you know🌌

I hate to be a nitpick, but the Mark 23 at 9:41 is backwards. The controls are only supposed to be on the left side of the gun except for the safety, which is ambidextrous. I had to get mine out and compare because the one in the video looked weird to me and I couldn't place why at first. By the way this series is wonderful, and thank you for subtitling and editing it. It's great to see this done by an actual MGS fan who can add context, include in-jokes, and make sure we see Pekora's reactions to things that an editor who doesn't know MGS wouldn't be aware of.

Strictly speaking in MGS1 it's CQB (close-quarters battle) which is a bit more limited, but when I went back for research purposes I was surprised by how much you could actually do.

@@mongooseunleashed My understanding is that he doesn't like CQC since Big Boss was the one who taught it to him, but by the time of MGS4 the events of the Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater were declassified (represented by MGS3 being a playable game) and led to a boom in PMC soldiers all trying to recreate CQC. When these soldiers come at Snake with their knockoff imitation CQC, the training takes over and he responds with actual CQC.
