I saw them in 2008. They were on stage for 3 hours and 10 mins. The manager of the venue came on stage and told them that he was going to pull the power if they did not stop playing. It was bliss!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Agreeed!! People rag on Thomas soo hard.....He is the greatest thing to happen to the mars volta...Nobody else can do an entire TMV catalogue setlist but Pridgen.Nuff said.
@gilsaraiva5815
@gilsaraiva5815 2 жыл бұрын
To be totally honest and, in my modest opinion, Pridgen was the worst drummer they had (despite being quite good). I suggest you watch Deantoni Parks live. Just put Omar Rodriguez Lopez live. Ofcourse Deantoni Parks has a different style and is far more technical and jazz influenced. He's a good prog drummer.
@Sabogey
@Sabogey Жыл бұрын
Guy was a beast but I really don't think his style fit them as good as Theodore, Parks or Elitch
@RockmanYoshi
@RockmanYoshi 5 ай бұрын
@@Sabogey IMO Pridgen fit the more abrasive and maximalist style TMV was trying around the 2008 era perfectly but its often irritating listening to him do the older material, especially the groovier stuff. He fucking conquers the jam parts during this era of Volta though, the Drunkship jam on this video is fucking intense.
@RockmanYoshi
@RockmanYoshi 5 ай бұрын
And truth be told, Pridgen's tastiest and most dynamic drum performance is in Xenophanes, not any Volta record (which practically is a Volta record, just with Ximena Sarinana singing). Dude had a lot of potential to develop a solid style but he wasn't cut out to handle the high stress and high demands that come with working under Omar and Cedric.

Give Omar Rodriguez-López a sick ass drummer to arrange around with and the sky is truly the limit with the Mars Volta. A pinnacle of electric guitar-ORL, in my estimation, demonstrated how further the electric guitar can go if it breaks away from the norm.

@ITrazar where did you get this? Man this is just pure gold, I'm from Argentina. This show was AMAZING! They came in 2005 (with Frusciante as guest guitarrist) and this in 2008. They never came back :(

Omar circa 2009: "Whenever it sounds like we're improvising I'm actually having the band rehearse sections of new songs..." Uhh, I think the Drunkship from this show would like a word with your reductionist / retcon philosophy ...

They often tried totally new jams at festivals. I think one time they did totally improvised with Cedric writing the lyrics on an actual typewriter. Called “abortion the other white meat”

14:50 Omar was always pissed at Thomas for something. Awesome drummer but he never worked out.

"damn I miss Jon's sense of dynamics and feel" most likely. Thomas is amazing, but once he starts it's impossible to get him to ever take it down when the music requires it.

You gotta keep in mind that Thomas wasn't Omar's choice. He wanted Deantoni to join after Jon left. Cedric basically went "it's either Thomas of I'm out". So it makes sense that Omar was frustrated with Thomas, adds to that the fact that he was partying a lot and not being the best player he could be.

@@SoloNecr0zis I didn't know it was Cedric who had so much of the decision regarding Thomas. He now says Jon was the best they ever had and always takes the time to apologise to him about how it all went down when their paths cross... We got TBiG from Thomas though so I'm glad he was so insistent.

He thought playing soft meant hitting hard just less often. He has no sense for dynamics. He threw everyone off. Just watch Zildjan Live - Larnell Lewis, and compare it to Zildjan Live - Thomas Pridgen

This would have been an awesome show to be at... The Mars Volta has a tendency to play sloppy live... I mean there music isnt simple so its understandable but they were all on point in this show including Cedric.
