This is an old Cossack folk song, also known as "Stepan Razin's Dream". It has been known in written form since the 19th century, when it became popular to search for and preserve old folklore. Stepan Razin 1530 - 1671, Cossack, leader of a peasant uprising. Stepan Razin, after the verdict was announced, was executed on Bolotnaya Square in Moscow on June 16, 1671 by quartering. And yes, the head was cut off last.

Thank you so much for the ideal description of this performance! ❤❤❤ Though I've heard two more of her performances, she surprised me in this one once again. All three she did were perfect and all three sounded like they were performed by singers with different vocal abilities, so she is quite an interesting find for me. Truth be told, I prefer her performances in Russian rather then in Spanish (she did Alfonsina y el mar), so I think I'll be looking up some more of those. I am pretty sure there are some gems to discover by this lady.

У меня было ощущение, что это традиционная песня. Также нормально, что многим европейским народным песням сотни лет. Для многих мы даже не знаем, сколько им на самом деле лет. Спасибо, что поделились этим. ❤ I had a feeling that it was a traditional song. It is also normal for many European folk songs to be hundreds of years old. For many we do not even know how old they really are. Thank you for sharing that. ❤

The great Pelageya is undoubtedly my favorite Russian female singer, not only for her incredible vocal prowess but also because she so often delves into what is typically called folklore-though I prefer to call it Tradition (yes, with a capital T). Even though Gagarina is fabulous (see her rendition of “Hurt”), and Diana is the prodigy of recent years (see her “Rechenka”), Pelageya deserves the title of Master. Beyond her professional experience, she is wholly possessed by her art. In my opinion, listening to foreign singers is most fascinating when they sing their traditional repertoire (why bother listening to Chinese, Indian, or Korean artists singing more or less like Americans?). So, let’s say a few words about my favorite traditional singers from the East… and let’s remember that each of these references is not a suggestion for a reaction but simply… references for you to use as you wish, to enrich your knowledge, to listen to by the fireside in the evening, or even to react to if my thoughts inspire you to do so. In China, I would first and foremost highlight Gong Lin Na (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gF6yk4Rso9WJY7s), who has both a classical and traditional background, and is married to a German composer who also introduced her to experimental music. A true synthesis ! Second would be Tan Jing (“Nine Girl”), whom the Chinese call “the great devil” (a compliment) and whom Dimash greatly admired during Singer 2017. In South Korea, I have only one name to mention, so remarkable that it surpasses all others: Song So Hee, Queen of Minyo. Already at the age of five, her teachers had to adapt their instruction due to the rapid pace of her progress. By thirteen, she was officially declared a national treasure. Even though, nearing thirty, she has started to blend a bit of modern music into Gugak Minyo, her “Tumen River,” “Haeundae Elegy,” and “If I Leave” remain her grand classics. In Mongolia, Daiqing Tana possesses perhaps the most piercing and, at other times, the gentlest voice I know (kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2mphWeeq6mYoKs). Often inspired by Tibetan Buddhism, she adapts certain mantras or sings folk songs in various languages. A true enchantment ! To be continued…

Having only heard three songs by Pelageya, I am already inclined to agree that she certainly captures attention. I also agree with you that the traditional songs are usually more interesting to listen to, as they bring something new to the listener, although they are old in their own country, or rather because of that. I have found Gagarina's rendition of Hurt, but does she sing anything traditional or at least, anything in her mother tongue? As for Diana, I have in fact reacted to Rechenka and was quite taken by that performance, especially as I have read since that many established singers shied away from that difficult song. It took a bit of research to ensure I've written down each singer and the song titles correctly (I hope), but I sure did add the following to the list (including the links you've shared with me): Gong Linna - Flowing Waters of a Little River Tan Jing - Nine Girl Song So-hee - Tumen River Song So-hee - Haeundae Elegy Song So-hee - If I Leave Daiqing Tana - Silent Sky Thank you so much for sharing all of these with me! ❤❤❤ We really do share an interest, as I LOVE hearing traditional music and it is very hard to find the right ones, or the best known ones, or the best renditions of the best known ones for each country. Too much information on the Internet and not very well ordered. 🤣

Wow. Very, very good reaction to this masterpiece, Aleks. I'm super happy that you chose to react to this one based on your own interest, as it tells me that you are curious about Pelageya. Furthermore, I'm very happy that I just watched your reaction to Lucy before coming here, as it will put some of what I said there into context. THIS performance will leave an impression on you, one that goes way deeper and lower in your body than your ears😂 Sounds strange I guess, but I think you understand what I mean. This has texture on so many levels. On your own time, maybe listen to another performance of this song as well? This time performed live on a song contest by Diana Ankudinova, age 18 at the time (21 now). I know you have reacted to 3 or 4 of Diana's performances before, so you know her voice by now. The video is quite long, with judges' comments and stuff, so maybe not suited for a reaction. I'll just paste the video title here so it is easier for you to find the one I'm thinking of : Oh, it is not evening yet (Stereo) - Diana Ankudinova @ ShowMaskGoOn, Round 3 (folk hit) Enjoy the rest of the weekend and have a wonderful week ahead, Aleks! Thank you so much, Sharkster! You are right, I am very curious about Pelageya. I've only heard 3 of her performances including this one and she keeps bringing perfect control, perfect pitch, but also a lot of emotion and almost creates a movie with her song. Each of her performances was so different, that I do need to hear what else is up her sleeve. At one point here she almost made me cry. Yes, it was partly due to the lyrics, but a part of it was instinct based on her tone that simply reached inside of me. Since 5 more people asked for Diana's version I do plan to react to it, but I'll skip the talk and listen to the song. It is always interesting to me to hear the same song performed by various artists, especially when the song is this beautiful. Love to you and Norway from Serbia! ❤❤❤

Thank you for another sensitive and intelligent reaction! Pelageya's rendition of this popular folk song is so powerfully moving and with such breath control. Other versions I've heard also tend emphasize the tragic heroism of the story. Fyi, Diana Ankudinova has a somewhat different interpretation and in her own unique but equally moving style.

Greetings from Scotland! This song is a *very, very old* Russian folk song about a young Cossack who has a strange dream on the night before a big battle. In his dream he rides out onto the battlefield as an evil wind springs up from the East, spooking his horse and blowing off his hat. Confused, he goes to see his commanding officer and asks what the dream could mean. The Captain (Yesaul) explains that it was not his hat which blew off, but his head! Gruesome stuff! 😲😲 And you know I have to say it, Diana A. performed this on "ShowMASKGoOn" in a spectacular fashion. SO, just for comparison (not vocally or style wise because Pelageya is a superb singer) here is that performance. "Ой, то не вечер" (Oh, It's Not yet Evening) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZe3moShf9d_n5I

Dear Peter, first of all apologies for the delay in my reply. I had a medical family emergency and it was rather hectic for a couple of days, but I'm catching up slowly. Thankfully, all will be well soon. This did feel like a folk song and the more I listened to the lyrics the more it became clear that the young Cossack will die in battle. Rather heavy, yet so beautiful and heartfelt the way Pelageya delivered it from his perspective. Sharky and Kiddo (Dominik) both added Diana's version to my list along with 5 other people even before I reacted to this one, so yes, I will be sure to hear Diana sing it, though without the judges' commentary. I now wonder what Diana's deep voice will bring to the table, considering the topic of the song. You already know I added your "vote" for it. ❤❤❤

I know this song only by Diana Ankudinova... but I know Pelageya, she's amazing... totally different vibe in the intro, Diana's is very mystic, this here sounded like the intro for Hotel California... I think I still prefer Diana's version, more depth in her voice, and also more emotion... Peace and love from Bavaria!

Ah, someone else mentioned the Hotel California intro, but I noticed some of the Russian comments saying this song is 100+ or even 300+ years old. As a couple of traditional Balkan songs were taken up by well known global artists since the 70's onwards, I am going to assume that The Eagles at some point heard this song and adjusted it. Although it is possible that they simply sound similar for who knows what reason. Can't tell which version I prefer, as I have not heard Diana's yes, but I sure felt emotion here from Pelageya. If there is more emotion in Diana's version, I might faint during the reaction. 😂 Thanks Kiddo, love to Bavaria! ❤❤❤

❤❤❤ Oh, that made me laugh! If a Russian says that Pelageya's version is the best, my fear of fainting at Diana's version is gone. I'll listen to it of course, but I'll be truthful. Thank you for suggesting another song by Pelageya. It seems she often collaborates on her songs with other artists and based on the comments she's rather famous in Russia. I am glad you liked her voice, Bruce! I thought she was amazing! It's funny, but a similar thing happened to a folk song from the Balkans, called Misirlou or as it is called here in Serbia - Vranjanka. They did a cover of it in Pulp Fiction while the original was an old folk song. So old that there's a long standing argument as to whether it is Greek, Serbian, Macedonian or Bulgarian. Each country has their own version of it and each one claims it's theirs originally. I know origins can stir emotions, especially when a song is important to an entire nation, so I will leave it be. As @germanpronin2137 and @ВикторияДубинина-н1ц pointed out, this one is important and very old.
