Lindblum. The first big city the assembled party reaches goes through so much development and plays such a big part in the storyline, the music is amazing (like all FF9 music), the hunting festival is mad fun, Cid is just fun to talk to every time you reach the city... definitely my #1 by far.

I always really liked Dollet in FFVIII. It's very representative of the "modern world plus sci-fi/fantasy elements" aesthetic of the game, and it feels the most like a real-life locale, like downtown in a big coastal city.
@danielostrowski8562 жыл бұрын
I love Esthar, it epitomises my feelings about VIII; the idea is so stupid in a lot of ways but it’s cool and interesting so I don’t care that it doesn’t really work. This is the biggest city in the biggest country in the world and they made it invisible so that nobody else could have their warp-speed elevators and device for throwing people into space
@Kuma56552 жыл бұрын
At an age where the night signified monsters and general terror, traverse town taught me that there's warmth in embracing the night. I'll always have a soft spot for that place.

I feel like there aren't really a lot of cities that I feel especially connected to in a lot of video games, but one that will always stand out as a crowning gem for me will be Rabanastre from FF12. While 12 has it's flaws, it's cities are honestly pretty fantastic, and feel like the most lived in spaces I've seen, at least from the games I've played. Going back to Rabanastre always felt like home, and I cannot give the team behind it enough credit!
@PelvicGaming2 жыл бұрын
Ha, you're the second person who said this! Apparently this is a city to look out for.

The undercity of Rabanastre is great, too. There's something oddly familiar about it. It feels like a huge sprawling busy underground mall.

Solaris is such a hardcore pick, I 100% approve. That whole part of the game is nonstop curveballs. As a kid who knew his sci fi movies, the whole time I was asking "BUT WHY IS IT CALLED SOYLENT? IS NOBODY ELSE BOTHERED BY THAT? MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T EAT THAT FOOD."
@pattyofurniture6942 жыл бұрын
I always loved Summers in EarthBound. It perfectly captures the south of France vapid beach town it's supposed to be! The music helps a lot.
@danielostrowski8562 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t actually apply to Solaris but I really like how Xenogears does cities- some of them have a city/overworld type thing where you have a zoomed out view of the whole city that functions like an overworld, and then specific parts are like regular areas. It’s a great way of managing scale in a genre that so often struggles with it. I love your Animal Crossing Soylent system; but I hope that’s not where villagers go after leaving town

Replaying Resonance of Fate on my steam deck and goodness the town so damn nostalgic for me. Tried Ace kills it in every game but this one is special. Plus playing dress up with the goon squad is timeless. 10/10 game for sure. I'm also very fond of everything in No No Kuni and Lost Odyssey. The combination of towns and music just sells the experience. And who could overlook Xenoblade X. New LA is hands down the best town in a jrpg. Stomping around in a squad of skells is top 10 favorite anime moments. So good.

My top 2 would probably be, Zeal from crono trigger, and Midgar from ff7. I remember when seeing zeal as a kid how it oozed magic and decadence, particularly the city where they were exploring meaning through dreams. Whenever you get around to playing Ni no Kuni II, I think you'll love Evermore. It's like a way more in depth version of what you described in Breath of Fire 2. Starts as a very small kingdom, but you can recruit citizens that you meet around the world and have them work services and shops. You'll be upgrading and building up Evermore throughout the whole game.

Frontier Village from XC1 will always be my favorite. Something about the way they make the verticality of the place work, plus the lived-in feeling and the incredibly cozy theme, just really stuck with me among even other colonies throughout the Xenoblade series.

@SimplyAJ2 жыл бұрын
When you said "A whole ass town, that is a ship?!" I immediately thought of Balamb Garden. Also, Traverse Town is hands down the best town in the KH series. Twilight Town came close, but you just can't beat that cozy jazz. Solaris definitely creeped me out as a kid, especially that tonal shift of the food processing plant; but man I'm definitely a sucker for Aveh. Something about the constant festival and feel good atmosphere. Plus the subtle callback to Chrono Trigger's Leene Square was just awesome.

Probably one of the most suprising towns for me just because of its scale and so many connected districts and area's. I mean I must have spent 4 hrs alone just talking to everyone and bsorbing as much juicy lore as I can get my hands on and that town is The Magic Industry City of Gohtza in the game Lost Oddysey with its urban districy and magitec technology and sort of steampunk look and design, truly an amazing location. Hell that game had some amazing towns for a jrpg.

I liked your opening thesis, and I agree an RPG town accomplishes much in telling us about the world the characters inhabit. Love a good town. I still remember as a child the experience of first getting to Fourside in Earthbound. As you ride into to this city on that long bus ride and its all skyscrapers and such. Solaris is another shocking city. The heroes had to smuggle themselves in and the first you get to see of the city is oppression. That place takes you on a journey of seeing how rotten Solaris has become even when you get to the high class levels. Traverse town is just, doesnt it feel like you could take really good naps in that place. Its so cosy and has that lighting I would sleep like a baby.

Cities I would add- 1)Aveh, Xenogears. It’s the biggest city you have yet been to in the game. Which was mostly just your small village and wandering forests and deserts. It was so cool I would just run around the market while rotating the camera as a kid. It looks amazing on the world map too. 2) The Imperial Capital FF12. Your crew arrives after having wandered the field for many maps and finally you get there. And its like this metropolis. It gave the impression of being very lived in and massive. Wish I could explore it to scale. 3) Shevat, Xenogears and Zeal, Chrono Trigger. Just because of their theme music. 2 of the best tunes in videogame history. XD Shevat, the wind is calling.

Ooooh, I love a lot of RPG towns~! Not many people talk about them, so I'm very happy to hear your list. =3 Traverse Town is a really good mention, even if I kinda like Twilight Town more, there is something very cozy about the first main town we get in Kingdom Hearts. Another town I have a heavy nostalgia spot in my heart is Termina from Chrono Cross. The hustle and bustle and shops/nooks and crannies, it just feels so alive and I love it. Another town I'd mention loving, despite not being from an RPG, is Clock Town from Zelda Majora's Mask. Much like Chrono Cross' Termina, there is something about those active towns that I really love, including the background noise of hammers being used constantly. (I'd also recommend checking out Okage: Shadow King for some really unique designs as a whole, from landscape, towns, and characters~)

There is also a pretty major sci-Fi novel called Solaris by Stanislaw Lem, although I don’t know anything about it so not sure if it inspired Xenogears’ Solaris. Arthur C Clarke’s ‘Childhood’s End’ has been cited as an inspiration for Xenogears though, so the devs were definitely into their classic sci-fi

I think my favorite town in a J-RPG is Luin from "Tales of Symphonia". It's destroyed by the villains not long after you visit it, but you can rebuild it to make it better than ever once you get enough Gald (not a typo) to do so. But what makes it my favorite town is the weapons you can buy once you do said rebuilding. They're jokey af, but incredibly powerful! I also like that rebuilding it is actually canonical, since you see it totally rebuilt in the sequel "Dawn of the New World". Also, speaking of creepy places being modeled in "Animal Crossing", my girlfriend made an attempt to remake Rapture on her "New Horizons" island. She loves the "BioShock" series a lot, which some people would find surprising given how sweet and demure she is as a person. :D
