I always wanted a corgi since I was young after I met my neighbors corgi. When I was 15, I got my first dog from a breeder. I raised my little corgi from a puppy to an adult dog. Hes 6 now, and I must say I will never get a different breed of dog in my lifetime. Yes they shed and bark, but they are such wonderful and characterful animals. My corgi and I are inseparable. If anyone out there is considering getting a corgi, do it, you will not regret your decision!

My current pair turned ten this year (different litters) and I'm so not looking forward to losing them. But as a friend once told me " When they pass is when you pay the bill for all the years of love." They count on you being with them when they go. It breaks my heart when someone wimps out on their old pets and refuses to be with them when they pass on.

One of the things I love best about the pems is that they are up for anything. If you want to play they do too. If you want a nap they lay right down to nap with you, no fuss. If you are doing it, they are doing it.

@@dredzik all of my pems have come from show breeders so they have all been docked before I got them. However I certainly don't object to the tail. In horses there is an old saying "a good horse is a good color". Put tails in that context, same thing.

@Itsakindamagic Жыл бұрын
Ive had several pairs of pems and my one caution is, the pem is not what I recomend as a good first dog as they can easily outsmart a new dog owner. I currently have a female who was returned to the breeder as she took over the house, bit someone and caused all sorts of havoc. Yes, first dog they ever owned. However, if you have had dogs and know how to be the pack leader there is nothing better. No other breed, I have had a wide variety, is as smart, jovial, kind and loving as a pembroke. Have had cardigans in the house too and they tend to be more a one person dog. I love the gregarious nature of pems. My current pair like nothing better than to meet new people and be utterly charming.

Looks like they evolved over the years---the earlier photos, like the ones that Queen Elizabeth had as a child, look more like Swedish Vallhunds---a little taller, rougher coat, and more of a solid brown colour. Seems like they've become more distinct and refined in their appearance. Am I wrong?
@PavlovichDV2 жыл бұрын
You're right. Previously, they were just unattractive mutts without white marks. Now it is a very beautiful breed.

I have an elderly beloved Corgi, Dakota, definitely a Pembroke, but he has a beautiful tail that I just love. He is now 14, has developed hearing loss, cataracts, and mobility issues this last year, but still manages very well. He can still run although not as far is as long, and use stairs but with difficulty. He is my emotional support animal, and it's going to be very difficult for me when his time comes. I am now elderly myself, though active and healthy. But not sure I'm up to starting over with a new energetic Corgi after he goes. Vet thinks he's got another year or two yet, fortunately. EDIT TO ADD LONG UPDATE: my beloved Corgi boy Dakota passed away 3 days after Christmas 2024 at age 15 possibly 16 after an illness in which I completely devoted myself to his care. He had developed hip dysplasia and a terminal mass in his brain. It was like losing a child. The first anniversary of his illness and death is approaching, and I have very mixed feelings about Christmas this year. We had such a connection. A few months ago I adopted a cute, sweet, timid , affectionate Doxidor, at age 9 months, who had spent his whole life post Mama in shelters. Dakota was my Buddy, that was his nickname, and he was my loyal, loving best friend and sidekick. I will miss him forever and there is no replacing him, nor should I try. We have to move on. For that reason I did not get another corgi, my favorite breed, because it would've been a reminder of Dakota, not fair to him. Every dog deserves to be loved and appreciated for its own self. My new puppy is now one year old, a rambunctious ball of energy, a super cuddler, and wannabe rock and everything else possible eater. My goal is to keep him alive! I love him too, but in a different way. He's not my buddy, he's my sweet baby. I'm sure he has hip dysplasia too. I am devoting myself to caring for him now, and loving him for who he is, but I will never forget Dakota. Or the beloved dog I had before him that I lost. The cycle of life. I figure my new little guy and I have about the same life expectancy, barring his succeeding at doing himself in eating something terminal, and that he will probably be my last dog.

If I have one piece of advice it is *never* buy a corgi (or indeed any pet) on the internet. Go to a recognised breeder and see the mother with the pups. You'll pay more but you'll have a much better idea about the dog & it's welfare. The breeder will answer all your questions and they'll also get a fair idea of the person you are and whether you're sufficiently prepared to take on the responsibilities of dog ownership.

@PavlovichDV Жыл бұрын
Don't write nonsense! Some breeds have genes for natural bobtails. No one disfigured, that's how nature works. I advise you to study the topic before writing.
@Itsakindamagic Жыл бұрын
Actually back in the early days some were born without tails. The docking continued because they were everything dogs, herding, ratting, droving. The breed was used to do everything because their people were at starvation level and could only afford to keep a thrifty dog. That lovey luxuriant tail they grow was dangerous to the dog under many of those circumstances. Don't be hating the people who needed them to work and not be injured. It is becoming less prevalent to dock a tail here in the US too. The showing by laws have changed so undocked tails are now accepted. Give it time, it will go away.
@patriciaorellana6469 Жыл бұрын
@@Itsakindamagic I totally get that. I’m not hating on the working dogs or outdoor ones. I’m just hating on the ppl that buy them for the aesthetic of the no-tail and the breeders that dock them as babies to sell them to those ppl. I really hate ppl that buy pets that are mutilated for ‘looks’

Sorry this guy is wrong on multiple facts. Um I've had 3 Welsh Corgis and at first their lean but they can gain weight up to 50 lbs without the vet saying anything about them being obese. I took my dogs for runs and swims at least three times a week so to say they don't get up to 40 or 50 lbs is just wrong. When then get older they gain weight. This guy needs to do his homework..And btw all mine were purebred tricolor Welch Corgis. Dyno, DJ(dynojr) and D3(dynothe3rd). I don't think this guy ever had a Corgi in his life
