As a dog trainer, this video is 100% spot on. This is such a a great resource video for new pet owners. A lot of times when people find information on the internet, it gives misinformation but you made a great video! You must have had a great trainer, glad to see it. Don’t feel bad about your mistakes in the past, every pet parent makes mistakes, you are doing great with Willow

Also tip for the food aggression, feed her only with your hand. Until she realize that she can’t be Possessive with her food that you’re the only that can give her that food

Good idea but nothing ever worked for my dog. She was food aggressive since we first got her and no one has ever taken her food. 11 years old now and still has it. I had my toddlers drop treats into her bowl as she ate to prevent her from biting them. It worked the couple of times they got to her eating before me, but she still growls. She's a beagle though. Not sure I can handle the food aggression again. Might not be getting another dog 😞

I have had 4 corgis and haven’t had food aggression from a bowl but I had one corgi who growled when you took her rawhide bone from her. My solution was no more of those. I always heard that you can put your fingers in the bowls while they eat (as puppies) just to get them comfortable with you being around their food and eating.

Crate training my corgi was a huge blessing. It just gives them a space to call their own where he gets nothing but good things.

watching this vid I can say comfortably that this isn't just specific to corgi puppies but really are good tips for all puppies. Especially for people who never had a puppy before. My first dog was a very sleepy Yorkshire Terrier who was with me for 17 wonderful years. I learned A LOT by having him. Your first dog is like your first child- you'll always make mistakes that you know to do better with the next one. My corgi puppy benefited from all the experience I had from my yorkshire (including, yes, that it is normal to puke for dogs every now n then. especially that foamy stuff they puke up around once a month to clean their stomach XD (often after eating grass specifically for that very reason)) I am really glad that people share their experiences with their dogs so detailed and freely because it helps new dog parents a lot :)

What cute sounds Willo makes! I just adopted an Auggie and haven't heard any barking or howling yet, so that will be fun to discover. Well, until it becomes incessant. 😉 I need to buy a dremel. I'm so tired of using clippers and dealing with those jagged edges, and the quick never really gets very short with clipping.

This is a wonderful video and super informative! This is definitely not meant to scare anyone, but to spread awareness. We had a puppy 15 years ago that happened to fall in your category of swallowing a rock after we followed the advice of ignoring it. We had to bring him to have emergency surgery, and unfortunately, he didn't make it. It was extremely heartbeaking and I blamed myself for an extremely long time. I would be someone to argue to never let your puppy chew on rocks, etc. because of what happened to us. Even if it's an extremely rare chance.

Cute video. Great insight. I always tell folks who are looking, "The hair is Real!". I have had 5 Corgis now & have worked with horses and other live stalk for years so have had them around in that regard as well as a more of a house type dog. My current Pembroke Corgi is "Lili"; a female red headed Tri. I am currently dying from a rare illness, which has progressed over the years and is shutting down my autonomic nervous system. This last year has been rough, however I have the love and the devotion of little Lili by my side. I could make a video myself demonstrating the love, intelligence, patience and faithfulness of this little girl. When the time is right I have a perfect forever home chosen for her. I have over the years worked with many breeds and hands down if you get their respect, understand their nature and are firm and patiently loving, _they are stubborn cuties,_ Corgis are just simply the best! ♥ Btw the bleeps at the beginning of this video almost made me turn the video off. Very annoying and takes away from your hard work.

I love the video so far! One minor thing to note that hit me hard. Puppies can apparently hold their bladder for 1hour for every month old. Seems static...but when I adopted mine at 8 1/2 weeks I could practically set a timer to it. Every 2 hours he had to go and if I walked him at that interval he went QUICKLY.

Great advice ! I have a Corgi who is a year old. He eats mulch, rocks and anything else. I found that ignoring him is the best policy. A little too aggressive for me or sassy as you say. I’ll have to buy new socks. I’ve taught him to stay out of the garage which I use as a wood shop. Concerned about the noise, dust and him ingesting something. He stays at the doorway and watches me. He loves people who visit. Love my Corgi

Fantastic video. My Corgi has done well as she was crate trained from the beeder as a puppy. I never used a puppy pad as we live in the country, but everything you are saying is so helpful. We crated her when we went out and she felt safe. We love our Corgi so much and would definitely crate her when little, now at 3 she is left in the house when we're gone and she's well mannered. Really appreciate your video. It's the best I've seen on Corgis.

The way I taught my dogs not to be aggressive with food was by putting my hand inside their mouth as they're eating. I still do it sometimes now that they're adults and they just look at me like "are you done 🙄" 😂😂 Wouldn't recommend this with an older rescue though! Only puppies. Maybe put your hand on their food first, or even let them eat from your hand so they know what's edible and what's a finger. Some people take the plate or some food from them for a few seconds, but personally I don't have the heart 😅
@sararoeth
@sararoeth Жыл бұрын
We have had a senior rescue for 4 years and we are still struggling to teach him the difference between fingers and food :D so it is good that you mention, not to do it with rescues. Covering the food with my palm works quite well but feeding him from the hands just doesn’t work unless it’s from the Palm.
@vannedotdash7749
@vannedotdash7749 Жыл бұрын
@@sararoeth I think that might be good enough! As long as he doesn't get angry when you're near him eating :) I know some strays* that eat from my fingers but they're not used to being fed like that and they look like they wonder when I'll drop the food to the ground 😅 it took some time but they don't bite and if they confuse my finger with food they let go when they notice I'm not letting go lol * they're strays but they live in a factory and the people treat them more like wild dogs, they feed them and pet them, and the doggies have their own beds, but they don't have a human

I have a almost 6 month old corgi. Her name is sourdough (and obviously corgi bread dog name) and this videos helped so much! But a little tip, if your corgi is a lot older and still pees on the grass pad, go to your local pet co or pet store and the should have a potty spray, the spray is used if your dog is peeing in a spot that they shouldn’t be going potty in. You spray it in the spot were you want them to go potty and they should go. Eventually they will get used to it

I have an almost 8 month old Corgi. She is tiny compared to your Willow. I also have two Cattle dogs, one blue and one red. This is a great trio. But I loved your video. I , personally, have had great success starting out a corgi in a crate relative to their size. Not large. Something that they can turn around easy in for potty training. The more room they have , the more they think they can pee "off" their bedding , for lack of better phrase. In my experience, with Heelers/ Cattle dogs , my Corgi didn't train as quickly as my Red and Blue, in the house breaking area. Patience is a virtue. She is great now at 7 months. My heelers were trained at 12 weeks. Just know your breeds. But knowing this breed is just as intelligent as a Heeler, I have a feeling her set back was with the breeder, as they kept her on puppy pads a long time and not exposed as much to the outside. I absolutely loved your advice on the nail trimming and teeth brushing. I've already implemented it in my daily routine, for my 3 herding dogs. We all wish we knew then, what we know now. You are obviously, a great Dog Momma. Thanks for all the great content. Your Corgi sploot is adorable I can' t get over how tiny, but fierce my Brida is. She lives up to her name lol. Thanks and keep it coming

Easy way to fix the potty patch issue would be to reintroduce the potty patch where willo likes to go now and slowly migrate it to the location desired. Mayb only moving it inches in a week. I’ve actually trained cats to use the toilet with this same method using the litterbox like the puppy pad

If you teach them about Crate training early on, they will love their crate. We have Crate trained every dog we have, Wall-E goes into his crate at bed time sleeps there and plays there while I am sleeping. He doesn't whine or howl unless he has to go to the bathroom. A puppy is a puppy until about 2 years old, and then they get free reign only if they are fully potty trained. This is my first Corgi, but we have 4 dogs, 2 GSDs, a Rat Terrier, and a Cocker. I got Wall-E after my Sarge died about 3 months later, I didn't want to replace Sarge but needed a PTS dog.

I had two sisters. One has since passed. There was an amazing difference in their personalities. Lizzie was the more aggressive of the two while Maggie even today is very quiet. Her eye sight isn't too good any more at 13 years old. One eye is blind and the other has a little sight. It doesn't stop her though. She knows where her food dish is at 5:00 and the little treat pile. The pile sits there all day and she goes and gets a piece when the whim strikes. I break the NUDGES in 3 pieces. I get DOGS LOVE CHICKZEN at COSTCO and those get broken up too. A small piece of Jerky and a Greenie round it out. At bedtime I take her out and close up afterwards. She gets half a NUBS. The dogs had free rein during the day. I have a 1/2 acre for them to roam in. I put in a pet door and they go in and out when they please. Maggie would walk the perimeter of the fence several times a day and chase the chipmunks from the bird feeding area. If a delivery man comes she stays near by. I tell the guy to say, "Hello Maggie" and she goes away. She goes out on the leash once a day. These Corgis are the best dog I've ever owned. Intelligent and with sweet dispositions. There's some maintenance but not too much. The long hair around their butts needs trimming or it picks up poop. And they need to be brushed. Do it outside so the hair will float away on the wind. There's still shed hair in the house but not nearly as much if you don't. They like people. They follow us all around the house, inside and outside. and they'll jump in our laps without prompting. They ae playful and entertaining. It's hard to find better dogs than Corgis.

Our corgi is almost 6 months old. I’ve been working with her since we got her at 8 weeks. She is getting better but she has such a terrible stomach. We were told to stay away from chicken which is basically in everything. She refuses to eat some days then gets hangry. I’m at a complete loss of what to do with her but we love her very much. I need to do wait commands and I started place but our other dog peed on her place and it hasn’t been washed yet 😂😂 She doesn’t trust the other dogs around her food. We are working on that. But her playpen is her safe place and that’s when her most protective tendencies come out so the playpen can backfire on you also. It feels like I can’t win for losing lol

I'm pretty sure this is for all puppies not just corgis. I do have a corgi pup and he's thankfully a fast learner and he was potty trained in a week after getting him, he will put himself up in a crate for naps, and he's 5 months old and knows most of the basic commands. His issues are still the bitting (he's teething at the moment), the "come" command, and he's still trying to learn the basics of service dog training. One thing that I will note is before we got him he had a bed and toys ready for him and when we got him he immediately knew within 24 hours that that is his stuff and he will still lay in his bed when he's tired and all of his toys he'll drag them out of his basket and bring them into his bed and lay on them as if to say "these are mine and mine only" although if another animal tries to mess with them he doesn't care the only rule is you have to play with him now 😂.

Another tip for the puppy biting. It is common in very young puppies. We have a tendency to get puppies as soon as the stop drinking mothers milk but they are not ready to be adopted and they tend to have behaviors that their mother and puppy mates would fix. It is good to let the puppies stay with their mother for at least 12 weeks. This allows the mother to not only nurse them but train them better. That way the puppies are ready to be adopted with better behaviors. They don't bite as much or at all. And they will be better adjusted as well. We do like our tiny adorable puppies, but we hate the difficult baby behaviors they have. Their puppy mates and mother help with that. If we don't mind. Breeders can also have the adopted families visit regularly during week 8 through 12. It helps them get adjusted to the family and get rid of undesirable behaviors..

CORGIS FOR LIFE. I had a corgi for 15 years...I don't know if he's still alive or not since I had to unfortunately 'give' him away due to a relative that was bad, but I am satisfied the animal had a good life while he was in my hands.

My older corgi he is now 4 loves his crate lol idk how I did it but I started off with a puppy crate in my room. He goes in any crate w/o you asking. If it’s open he will go in when coming back from outside. He was fairly easy to train. Olive my 10 week old is giving me a run lol

Thanks! This really helps a loooot. I have a 2 month old corgi now and sometimes I just couldn't handle his energy. Corgis are full of energy and due to their herding skills, my corgi Happy, likes to chase people around the house and nibbling our feet when we walk. My parents hate it when that happens. lol. Is Willow also like that when he was still a puppy? I really want to know. Thanks!

You probably don’t want tips but with the patio potty thing, Everytime they do it on your patio splash a load of water over it because they sniff where they pee and then pee/poop there again.

I am dogsitting my good friend's corgi while they are away in a trip for the next couple of weeks. I was not warned that this dog (around 3 years) old was not fully potty trained until the day she was dropped off at my house and her owner (my friend) brought "wee wee pads" with her, saying she may need them at night. BC I didn't want to cause a problem with my friend going on her trip, I didn't really say anything but knew I would not be using those. The corgi is demonstrably capable of holding her bladder for stretched of time, such as over night when I put her in her crate to sleep. The problem is, her owner has inadvertently taught her it's sort of OK to go in the house sometimes. I can understand why she would think that (I can go when there's that white square down). While she's been with me (5 days now), she had had a few "accidents", most of them in the first two days. So far today, day five, no eliminating in thr house! It can be done but it takes a lot of vigilance and a lot of walkies. Aside from the inappropriate elimination, she's a doll!! 😍

A little add on to the socialization point: Talk to your vet about how prominent Parvo is in your area. If it is uncommon, do NOT WAIT until all of the vaccinations are done because you are missing out on the most critical socialization developmental period of your puppy (lasts until 14-16 weeks). They should arrive at your place at 8 weeks earliest and already had their first round of shots. If you want to be sure, wait until the second round which is the most important. Not socializing the puppy puts them at a higher risk to have behavioral issues and being put down than catching Parvo (statistically speaking). Simpawtico dog training elaborates on that with vets ☺️ Highly recommend his videos!

If I may ask too... what do you recommend for training treats? Hes still a puppy so I want something he can scarf down quickly. Some treats take him way too long to eat and he looses focus. I have tried some freeze dried crunchies that work good but they are expensive by volume. Id love to hear your recommendations!
