Nice! The custom blanks are awesome! It would be nice if you could get that style pen but longer. Awesome work though. I say keep making the videos the way you are doing now! Some how to and some info mixed with B roll makes it more entertaining to me.

Thank you - I'm working on a few new ideas for the blanks... should have some new concepts ready soon. Thank you for the input / feedback on the style of video!

Sorry, no longer turning pens, but there are a whole bunch of step by step videos out there.

Great video Mike. That blank looks great. I agree with you on the not going down to the busing and sanding the rest of the way. The only difference I would say with me is I start at 120 and go to 800 through the dry and then micromesh down to 12,000. I find this gives me virtually no scratch marks and then I use a polish to really lift it. I will sometimes use Yorkshire Grit too between dry and wet if there are some stubborn scratchs, it saves wearing out the micromesh
@sleavesleather6 жыл бұрын
Thanks John! I'll give this a try...aside from the Yorkshire grit, at least until I can get some locally! 😉

My husband makes pens on a lathe but he buys his blanks instead of making them. I will be sure to let him know about your channel. I'll bet he will love your channel.
@sleavesleather6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment. I used to buy my own blanks but when I started to see the same pens I make show up in other places I figured it was time to start making my own so that my pens were unique! If you husband has any questions tell him to not hesitate asking, I'll be more than happy to help!

He's been making custom celtic knot pens that have been turning out beautifully. He pieces the wood together, and when he turns it, it's so cool how it looks. I'll connect him with you. Love what you do!

Great vids. Keep it up. I turn between centres using the regular bushings you already have. Just use a dead center in headstock and rotating center in tailstock.
@sleavesleather6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Wayne - I'll give that a try this weekend!
@wj32196 жыл бұрын
It’s really simple and I don’t think I will use a mandrel again. You can only turn 1 piece of the pen at a time but I find it much better than using mandrel as you don’t have to worry about the mandrel being straight.
@sleavesleather6 жыл бұрын
I just bought a new mandrel but will still give this a go this weekend. 👍

Wow, Mike your videos are really well done. That stop motion was a brilliant way to make something as simple as laying out parts look interesting. Intro is fantastic. I know it's a long road but you're doing really well.

I like that pen kit. I like single blank pens. Your organization for the bushings is great. I need to do that. Of course, I’ll need to figure out which ones I have. 🤪
@sleavesleather6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I too am a big fan of anything single blank. As for the bushings organization - that came after a year of digging through a drawer full of little baggies to get the right set... frustration finally won!

Came out great man, I'm with you on the TBC transition. I don't want to buy all new bushings
@sleavesleather6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! 👍 I'll get switched over someday, just not a priority right now. I think I'll just start ordering TBC bushing with each new pen order and slowly make the switch.

Have you ever had the ribbon detach from the blank. When I tried it with Aluminite Amazing casting resin the second pour didn't stick to the ribbon. Great looking blank and pen.

Use Alumilite Clear Slow Set next time. "Amazing Casting Resin" is not meant to be used for items that will be turned on a lathe.

If anyone ever tells you you have to drill on the lathe or even you should....show them 2 of the same style pen where one was drilled on the lathe and one was not and ask them to tell you which is which. There's no way to tell. It's a 50/50 guess, but no way to tell if was drilled on a drill press or on the lathe itself.

Thanks, don't have to worry about this any longer, but maybe someone will find your comment helpful, I know I would have back when I was still pen turning.

I like your format just the way it is -- without detailed nuts and bolts extraneous to the specific thing you're presenting. One thing that drives me crazy about some other KZbinrs is what I would call an unconscious disregard of the viewer's time: way too much babbling about nothing.

Thanks John! On to a different hobby, new content coming. Not sure what format I'll be following but will keep this in mind.
