I generally find Penderyn expressions pretty easy-going and drinkable - good summer stuff. But I only ever pick them up on offer. It is always good to re-visit drams to see how much your palate has evolved. Cheers mucker.

Great intro Jim! agree with what you say its sweet, light and inoffensive and yes it does taste like a grain whiskey, managed to visit distillery last year.

I watched this high as hell drinking Sagamore Rye barrel proof and was happy as hell. The internet can be cool as F@%K. Thanks my friend for making this video.

I absolutely loved this! Non chill filtered, 46% abv & full of flavour! £26 too when I bought it.

Cheers Jim - perhaps one to avoid, which is disappointing because a madeira cask finish should offer an interesting dimension to a malt. However in this case, seemingly a tad heavy on those sweet notes. C'est la vie I suppose.

I was hoping it had improved. I have an unopened bottle to do a re-review sometime. Oh well, thanks for sharing!

a re-review ... and my first thoughts are: why this one, Jim? Have tried it and yes sharp and sweet. Straight pulled out of the candy shop ... and after a sip straight to the dentist. For me not much to entertain in this one. But there might be people who think otherwise. Curious about the next re-review, hoping it is on the other side of the palate. Slàinte mhath

This one Frank because, since I reviewed it first, loads of people have told me they liked it. "Am I missing something?" I thought to myself. Well, I don't know what's to like about it in fairness 🤷‍♂️ Slàinte my friend.

There's a US import 5 year single Madeira cask that's a temptation. Was a temptation at $125. Hahaha

Interesting you speak about grain because Penderyn use some very particular (Faraday) very tall pot stills that have a column still device on top which is supposed to provide a purer distillate that can reach 92 % abv (almost as high as for grain whisky in Scotland), so that lightness you feel might come from that. I have 3 of their whiskies (the "intermediate" core range if I may say) & they have changed a bit over time...Funnily I prefer in the video the Penderyn rather than Teeling's single grain (I can't pass those wine casks they used), colors & tastes ! Cheers !

What you have to look out for are the one offs eg a 6 yr old at 63% that they did for the Whisky shop, or the grand slam editions, but they aint coming back any time soon 😞 I like this for one reason it opened my mind up to Maderia casks and the Glen Moray 13 yr at 46% nat colour and a full 13 yr maturation in Maderia casks is still for me the best dram i've had 🙂 Why Penderyn have never done an age statement pisses me off.

I was thinking of getting it, but after the review I don't know. Thanks for your opinion 🙏

I love Madeira matured single malts. Tend to work wonderfully but don’t use to be that sweet even if using casks from the sweetest type of Madeira wine wich is not highly sweet.

Could it be the madeira finish which gives it that sweetness? I find it has a brandy-like sweet edge which doesn't quite blend with what's beneath. It's the damn madeira cask edition which fills the shelves, I guess because they deem it to appeal to the broadest palate, but I'd love to try it without a finish.
