After this, I select random bricks for a covering with a sort of creamy vanilla hue, this finishes things off nicely. One can even paint over the mortar with black to represent very sooty townscape accretion, then make the bricks in between a more vivid orange.. this creates a nice effect juxtaposed with the normal technique.

I agree with 'Whitbyjet65' . I use a white and four colours for brickwork - Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Orange and Cadmium Red, Mix equal amounts of the Umber and Ultramarine to give you a black, then this can be used to take the sting out of the cadmiums and give the right hues for the bricks - anything from a washy pink to a dusty grey orange to a strong brick red. Start with lighter hues and gradually pick out random bricks with stronger hues leading finally up to sooty black.
