Another very cheap way is to use a childs watercolour paint set but add a bit of liquid soap to the water. It dries matt and is quite a robust finish.

I'm curious about the base model. Was this one of those laser cut carcases that you clad with your own plasticard for stone/brick etc?

When showing stuff to camera, hold it still, don't shake it about like you did with the paint samples, we need to focus and register on what you already know.
