This is really beautiful. I've only been seeing these videos from other DIYers for the past month and I love it. Yours is the best I've seen yet. Thank you, would love to try it.

This is the perfect tutorial I've been looking for; thank you! I've tried this a couple of time with using a hole drilled in the bottom of the paint can. I think I like your method better. The problems that I ran into were 1. Areas of skipped paint so (I guess) the can was moving faster than the hole allowed for dripping) and 2. Blotches of paint where (I guess) the paint was too thick and occasionally came out in globs. I did not thin my paint; lesson learned. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post this. Cheers. PS. I like your cover photo; very creative.

There is a 17th century device called a Harmonograph, which was used for drawing. The pencil is fixed and the paper platform pendulums on 3 axes. The frequencies of each pendulum can be changed so the forms are infinitely varied: e.g. www.karlsims.com/harmonograph/. It would be cool to adapt this to paint.

Travis, Thank you for sharing these inspiring videos! It has motivated me to attempt pendulum art and I've been somewhat successful, everything is working fine except for annoying drips that spoil the work. I have tried water bottles (like you use), plastic cups, coffee cans but I get drips! Did you have this problem? Is it due to viscosity?
@Nomadcreations3 жыл бұрын
Bill, I got them also. Generally hidden un-mixed Enough or Hidden Clumps. I mix My Paint Extra Good then Run It thru a Mini Kitchen Stainless Steel Strainer from walmart, To check For "Inadequacies". & remember Abstract, Which It is!; is Not Perfect so Splotches/Dribbles/Wide Spots ad Character & Personalizations! & then If U get a Couple Then Purposely Splatter a Few More Same/Contrasting Colors

Brilliant work, Travis! How do you manage to layer the paint in the same bottle without it mixing up? Is there a specific technique you use or is the paint thick enough so it doesn't mix?
@TravisChapmanart4 жыл бұрын
It just sticks to the side when its poured in. Once I turn it upside down to make the painting. The more dense paint goes to the bottom.

Still kinds confused. How to we thin the paint?
@TravisChapmanart3 жыл бұрын
It’s oil paint so I said it with mineral spirits. Also it’s good to use a filter to get out any bigger globs if the paint Has been sitting around for a while

im in this as well and saw a lot of videos .... yours is the most useful ! apart from your results , they really inspired me in a moment of artistic frustration , great tips ! thank you . my question : string or chain to hang the bottle ? how important is the legth of the string ? greetings from lanzarote , spain
@TravisChapmanart4 жыл бұрын
Either one works fine. I try and keep the dispenser as close as possible to the canvas with enough room to catch it when it’s done with a thin piece of cardboard or whatever To stop the paint from pouring

It’s an oil paint. I get it at Lowe’s. It’s rust oleum you can see the paint can and label in the video. Sometimes I finish with a little bit of mineral spirits

Cool, do you poke a hole at the other end for better flow? Or do you feel it comes out just fine with the one hole at the bottom? Thanks

It flows better if you poke a hole to let the air in.

Hey Travis! those are some really neat pieces! I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. I am trying to create this for my wife and would like to know... : What set up did you use to create the first painting? (if you could be specific, it would be much appreciated) How do you layer paint so it changes mid way? for ex. white to yellow in the first painting. Is there a certain amount of mineral spirit that you pour into the cup? lastly, If your mineral spirit is not a precise measurement, how much do you pour if you were eyeballing it ? Thank you in advance, I understand a lot of people have questions and I hope my list of questions makes it easier for others trying to do this too. We all appreciate the feedback you give us. I hope my wife enjoys her anniversary gift! P.S. You should make a tutorial on shapes and how you create them! and maybe a video on color combinations! I know I would watch them!
@TravisChapmanart4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks. Honestly the shapes are not that controllable. If you watched my video on the tutorial. There’s a way to make sort of a square version but usually it’s circular and it depends on how you throw it. A lot of it is trial and error. It seems to change if you throw it clockwise or counterclockwise. I have about a 50% success rate for all sorts of different reasons. To get the flow rate rate you can dip stir stick in the paint pull it out and let it drip off if it makes a nice stream it should work. Also the size of the hole makes a difference and you really just have to work it out. I always let it drip/pour for a few seconds to make sure that it’s going to make a steady stream. You can also just throw it without the paint pouring out and see what it does and I will give you a general idea of what type of throw ends up to what kind of shape. Glad you like them. Thanks!
