So I saw this pendulum wave video on KZbin and thought, "I wonder if I could make that?" It's a scrap wood project and entirely for my own amusement.
I used a 1" dowel, a couple of cedar boards, and some network patch cable. I spent about an hour last night just setting off, over and over and over again. It is quite hypnotic...

After watching for years, my wife and I went back and watched from the beginning wondering when your videos would transition to the high quality we see today. I think this video was your turning point. Also if you're reading this during the wild fires, could you do a video catching the falling ashes in resin, and then sealing them in with another layer? I think it would be an interesting time capsule of the fires and air quality we are experiencing in California.

This would be an amazing way to practice animating snakes or Chinese dragons, or if you're into the 3D stuff you could even add tracking points to the different weights and do a digital render

It would be awesome if the one with the shortest amount of string looked like a snake head, and the rest looked like the body!

Wouldn't the action be much freer is string (monofilament?) was used, instead of the stiff phone wire?

I was thinking of a stationary dowel at top, then a PVC pipe, just a little larger covering that dowel, with bearings (skateboard bearings) at both ends. Attach the pendulum strings to the outside PVC pipe. Place a 'stop' to allow only approx. 45 - 60 degrees of 'turn' to the outer PVC pipe. Make the pendulums heavier at the shorter end and gradually lighter at the longest strings. When the heavier pendulums swing one way, they pull the PVC pipe to that direction (but only a few degrees), then when they begin gathering on the other side, the outer PVC pipe would turn that side, then back, and so on. It just seems to me that this would allow for more stored "potential" energy, giving a longer run time. ... Just a thought.

Not on this girl. She came off the line in 1950, and the guards were junk! As for a riving, knife, it hadn't even been dreamed up yet. I do need a splitter though.... It's on my list! :)

Riving knives were around long before before the 50s, here's a Wadkin catalogue from 1929 www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=168294&p=1631317#post1631317 You could make your own guard as well if you wanted.

Robert Marks Here's the truth. Mine didn't work that great. I think the wires were a terrible idea! Fishing line would have been much better!

That's exactly what I was thinking. 2lb test monofilament or the lightest braided I can find and maybe golf balls for the pendulum. I didn't actually get to it today.

Have you thought of using monofilament fishing line for the cables to hold the weights? I thought about it making the pendulum wave move more smoothly than the rope twines. ;)

what is the length of the wire? and how much lenght long is the other wire to another?
@battelinin
@battelinin 10 жыл бұрын
I have a question, if you don't mind. What is different about the bobs? I'm assuming that the reason the patterns are formed is because of differing periods with the same amplitude. A differing mass wouldn't affect the period, only the momentum. It looked like your strings or wires were slightly different lengths, and a longer string makes for a longer period. Is that the only difference?
@peterbrownwastaken
@peterbrownwastaken 10 жыл бұрын
battelinin I'm not sure. I just copied the lengths from someone else who published them. I've heard it's about the intervals and not the lengths, but I'm a practical person and that made little sense to me! :)
