On May 1, 2021 we sat down with a just-drafted Penei Sewell to talk about his family, motivation and more.
Three years later, we sat down with Penei again right after he signed a contract extension making him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL and had him reflect on and update his answers to those very same questions.

Hey, Penei. Just in case you read these comments? I was born in Michigan but due to my dad's Army life, we moved a lot and ended up in Tennessee. After I got through a long bout of depression and had the mental energy to start rooting for the home team, about this time last year I jumped back on the football bandwagon, caught up with the Lions state of affairs, and all over the place I saw your big shining grin. This past year, you helped deliver a HUGE wave of optimism and joy to my native state, and I am so proud that a young talent as humble and wonderful as you is taking care of my people as much as they are of you. With Goff being traded away, Lions are easily my second favorite team as it’s so nice to see him succeed with the right tools and an effective line. My favorite lion. Everytime I think about Penei, I think about how on draft night I was so incredibly nervous that cinci was going to pick him and the relief I felt when they didn't.
