A FACT: The director Yoo In-sik convinced the studio to push back production of the serie for a whole year just for the actress. Park was offered the role which she originally declined, stating that she wasn’t sure she would be able to portray Woo Young-woo, the neurodivergent attorney. She then chose to star in KBS’s The King’s Affection. The drama ended up doing really well, and the actress was praised for her acting. Yoo waited until Park finished filming The King’s Affection before he approached her once more. At a press conference for her new series, Park said when she saw how the entire production team had waited a whole year for her, she felt that she could trust them and their director. “I couldn’t imagine another actress playing Woo,“ said Yoo.

Peng-soo is a famous persona/character in KZbin in Korea, kids really love him and adults too, Pengsoo can be sassy and loves his collab with idols and other celebs in Korea. The taxi driver went to Jung and not Young Woo for resolution. I missed that too, everyone did. VERY subtle, but showed that everyone misses small prejudices. The Taxi driver may have been reasonable to make that choice in a general and real world, but acknowledging the fact we all miss little things we take for granted may mean more to others we interact with matters is the point I think. It's the real world, but IMHO, if you simply acknowledge you are not perfect but want to do better is how you dont lose you mind if you make mistakes ;) Such a subtle but important line.

this ep got me crying so much. you know that this was not only about autism. it was about any kind of difference, people are in. Different time, different countries, there was (is) time when you didn't deserve to live when you're jewish, when you're black, when you're yellow, when you're a woman, when you're about average weight, according to what your religion is... there were times you got killed just because you looked a bit strange/had some health problems since the birth... really great episode with a powerful message.

This is the episode that really sold me this series. While Park Eunbin really does a great job as Woo, it was still looking like it's gonna be another show with brilliant autistic person who's almost like a magical character. I'm autistic myself and I cried many times during this episode. Those internet comments were realistic AF. When there's an article or something else in the media about an autistic person I don't even bother to look at the comments. It's insane. Not to mention the constant diagnoses from behind the keyboard of every TV/movie villain, every antisocial person or a criminal in the news. It breaks my heart every time how cruel (and dumb) people can be. They hear a bit of a story and they're saying "oh, he's autistic" like it doesn't take many visits to a team of specialists to diagnose a person with ASD and that one thing that makes them think of autism isn't a symptom of many different disorders. Just because we don't show it that often, it doesn't mean that we have no feelings. "Fun" fact: autistic people can't be sociopaths or psychopaths since it's a neurotypical thing - think about it every time when you see a murder on a trial trying to pose as autistic. And think about how you would feel when someone would call you one of those things every time you'd do one thing wrong. That rant about Hans Asperger was super important too. People are still pushing the "Asperger Syndrome" BS like it's a thing when in reality they are telling us: "this person is usable while that person isn't". The fact that for years medical world was diagnosing only one side of the spectrum with autism (and usually only boys/guys) made people think that it's a norm. To say it simply, all people with ASD have a set of mutated genes while some of them have an extra few that give them difficulties with learning and communicating but the "base" is still the same. To say that somebody "has Asperger's" is like calling identical twins "Mengele's siblings" or sth similar. I don't think that Myeongseok was offensive wanting Woo on this case. He was just clueless about what to do and she was his best option. I love his character so much, he's a sweetheart. The same with Junho - if you don't know how the world treats autistic people, you're usually stunned at first and literally don't know what to say. It's a pretty good depiction. What I really could never understand about neurotypical people is apologizing for others. They don't feel bad about the things that they've said so why do that? It's not like they're apologizing through you, you just want to distance yourself from their statement/behavior so saying: "I don't agree with that."/"It wasn't ok." should be enough.

This show really gets deep & gets you in the feels. I'm glad you're enjoying the depth & wholesomeness of a show like this. The lead actress is just killing it with this role esp in the moments when she doesn't necessarily have lines but you see & feel SO MUCH in her eyes & facial expression. The development of her character & all the supporting characters, esp Junho (the male lead) & Attorney Jung (her senior supervisor attorney) is just incredible as they all learn & adjust with each episode. Can't wait for yall to see more!

That image of the autistic son from behind, and her voice saying 80 years ago they wouldn't be worthy of life, hits me in the guts. Amazing performance from that young man. So moving! Mr. Jung is a well written character, because although he does say some socially inept thiings (like a lot of people do faced with the unknown), his heart is in the right place. He's one of my favourite characters in this fantastic series. Thank you so much for sharing your reactions with us! You look smart in your whale hats! What I really like, is that the fins give the hat a vague resemblance to Korean hats of the olden days!

loving your reactions! this is my favorite show for all of the reasons y'all talked about. i have autism, and even though my support needs are different from the characters in the show, i still see so much of myself and my friends in young woo's character! all the details are there, from her walk, to her habit of repeating what others are saying, the way she constantly infodumps about her special interest and even the way she eats the same thing every day. park eun bin did a wonderful job of bringing this character to life. i love how much care and attention to detail was brought to her acting. you can tell how much respect she has for the autistic community and her dedication to portraying her role in a way that doesn't mock us. can't wait for y'all to watch the other episodes, it only gets better from here!!

BTW, in case someone didn't say it yet ~ the law firm name "Hanbada" in Korean means "Han (the CEO's last name) ocean" so Woo Young Woo who loves whales is working in a law firm named OCEAN, like she is a whale in the ocean. Also, in the Korean language ~ the Korean word for "dolphin" is "dol-whale"

I think that the character with the most development in this show is Attorney Jung. He started off so opposed to Young-woo but I love how he was raising his voice in defense of her when the prosecutor was being a whacko.

A couple of days ago I walked into a restaurant, I sat down to eat and at the next table I saw a family, two older people and what looked like their teenage children. The thing is the son get making this wailing/moaning sound every minute or so. The table looked embarrassed. If I had witness that seen before watching this show I might have gotten annoyed or maybe stared at the family cause I would have wondered what is going on. But cause of this show I just thought "guy is just being who he is" and didn't think anything about it. I wish we had more stories and shows like this that help people see and understand each other. It helped me to see and not judge people with developmental difference by helping me to understand just a little bit.

What I like about this drama is character development of each individual in this story, they are not perfect just like in reality but we can see them grow into our eyes. The first time I watch this episode I also teared up when Young Woo ready those nasty comments about people with autism. I am early childhood teacher and I have handles children with spectrum, clearly they world is very different with a normal child, and this show showed what are the feelings of the parent with autism, YW’s dad who did everything and all his efforts paid off because YW turned out to be genius and she grew up with normal school and have regular job, then we saw parents whose child has 6 years old mindset with a normal child, they are in denial that their normal child attempted suicide just because he is smart, but he as well is pressured that all the responsibilities were in his should just because he is the “normal” one that he needs to live on his parents expectations while his younger brother will not shoulder anything because of his disability. This show highlight all the feelings of those who are involve. If you watch ITS OK NOT TO BE OK, it also show the struggle of the sibling who has a brother with autism. Anyway remember that this cases are real, and eye opener to the society

That little girl who portrays 5 yr old Young Woo is EXCELLENT! I'm sure child actors are probably trained to show exaggerated emotions, Speaking of kids, do you think this would be a good show to watch with children (they show how to respect people with disabilities, don't judge a book by its cover, great friendships among women, how to go high when a bully (or jealous co-worker goes low). What age would get the most from learning from The Extraordinary Attorney Woo?

I've seen the whole series, so I'd say it'd probably get a PG-13 rating in the US. Common Sense Media says ages 10 and up. I wish Netflix had content warnings for each episode, but in general expect some scary scenes (like the several depictions of suicide and assault in this episode). The scariest scene was probably in episode 11, there's a car crash that comes out of nowhere. Wikipedia has summaries of each episode, but you should watch them yourself and then decide.

30:26 what I really think is important about this episode is that it does represent the experience of being autistic. No matter how hard you try, it’s never quite good enough. People will always just…not see you. It’s a painful way to live. Tho I think this show is using some of the older research I still think it has done better than most at representing the autistic experience.

I was watching another channel with a lawyer reviewing this show. 2 Things. 1. the laws portrayed were pretty accurate. 2. Clients yelling at the attys and having some pretty unreasonable expectations (especially if they had wealth and/or power of any level) was not uncommon.
