Every so often penguins walk around the map. Pair off and make more penguins who spread out and look for other nesting sites. This happens faster as penguin population declines. Should penguins get wiped out, fish steadily accumulate till the map crashes instead.

Ironically, actual Arctic bases are quite sprawling, they avoid bunching up to stop fires from spreading. Arctic air is hella dry, there is much wind and not much liquid water, so fires are a huge threat.

The penguins reset the countdown! Actually, I don't remember any cases of gaia canceling the countdown. It might be due to the fact that there were no gaia units anywhere near the monument in any previous games, or maybe penguins count as military units (as other military units autoattacked them, and they auotattacked the buildings, which other animals in the game usually don't do).

Penguins are classed as heavy infantry units. theyre not meant to be animals, which is why the Magyar dont one shot them and they dont drop food (The map script uses triggers to transform them into (hunted) deer when they die) normally.

This is probably a decent way to balance it actually… I’d have the penguins have basically half of each stat, but they get blacksmith upgrades as the game goes on, they respawn at the monument and work their way back to their initial spawn location. It’d make holding the monument more intense.

Please do kamikaze exploding penguins. The explosion doesn't have to be huge, maybe just a few tiles. But it could be so good. Edit: and if the explosion is large enough, it could cause a chain reaction across the map. So maybe luring the penguins to particular locations away from the rest becomes super important.

this would be great with a villager improvement mod giving you the ability to make villagers use bows in combat in dark age, unlocking in feudal age a villager variant meant to work far away from the safety of walls and other defensive structures wearing a decent armor that makes them slower but strong enough they can win in 1v1 against any non-ranged feudal age unit, then in castle age you unlock Caravan which is a wagon that villagers can garrison inside and allows villagers to collect resources to it, and whenever its garrisoned the villagers use their bows making it a mobile tower, however this unit is as slow as a ram and easily destroyed by mangonel line, as for imperial age there'll be another new unit called Caravan Elite Guard that either uses a musket for gunpowder civs, or a bow for the others and is nearly as strong as an arbalest/handcannoner but way more expensive, however when inside a caravan wagon, it fortifies the caravan making it immobile but more resistant, and all villagers inside get a morale boost increasing damage, making aproaching a caravan without siege even more deadly that a castle, basically a high investment way to secure your resources as all the special units would have a matching price for their very good abilities.
