Regarding a dresden soul gaze. I could see it now, the penultimate chapter of the final book, a close confidant of harry comes to cradle his dying body and he initiates a soul gaze either inadvertently or to convey something. Maybe it's maggie, or someone else close to him in the last battle of the war. And the we get the epilogue through that characters eyes....

Dresden keeps getting better at his job, BUT in his universe he is quite literally "the new kid on the block" and keeps finding out that the "real world" in his dimension is WAY beyond what he originally knew about -- the more you know, the more you realize how little you know about all that there is to know...

I don't have a video, sadly, but I wanted to say, in reference to their conversation about swordsmen doing a 360 spin and how no professional swordsman would ever do it, while they're probably right, I do know someone who does that move to great success. Duke Miles in the SCA will occasionally do it during a tourney, and it almost always works...exactly once.

I have always imagined soul-gazing Harry as some version of seeing the white knight/paladin repeatedly slay his normal self for the greater good. Like, instead of "evil" dream-self Harry, you get "good" Harry eliminating every iteration of himself who goes for a life of contentment and happiness.

NOTE: Walls work BOTH WAYS! If you try to make every single loose thread be cut or tucked into a hole in the story to LOCK IN everything there, then other later stories are LOCKED OUT since they would in many cases CONTRADICT things in the original story and mess up continuity. This seems to me the same concept of Gödel's Incompleteness Theory in math that states that no matter what you do, somewhere in your math topic of discussion you will be able to form a problem that REQUIRES information from OUTSIDE OF THAT TOPIC to solve it (if solvable at all). Math, like storytelling, is thus an open-ended technique that MUST include outside elements if your want to continue a storyline or do more math.

Have you ever had a character in a book you were going to write that simply refused to do what you had planned for him/her and literally argued with you as to what did or did not make sense for that character? Kind of like a split personality thing. I read that when Mel Blanc, the original voice of Bugs Bunny and many other movie cartoon characters, nearly died after an accident (luckily he recovered fully, I think), they found that while they could not talk to the unconscious Mel, the hospital staff COULD TALK TO BUGS BUNNY AND SOME OTHER OF HIS CHARACTERS AND ASK THEM HOW HE WAS DOING!! Got me thinking about writers, too...

I'll concede, the slog was rough. Yet to this day it remains, imo, one of the best fantasy series of all time. The homage paid to all the different cultures across the world, the amazing character development paired with the sheer number he created, the foundation it set forth in our genre cannot be denied. I'd also like to note, while pat had me for awhile with his amazing first clue novels, I'm not sure I can forgive the decades long wait. At this point its sheer laziness or perfectionism, either is a detriment to his craft and a betrayal to those of us who've followed and read the series. I understand each of us should be allowed to create at our own pace, yet there are limits. Those first two books were a promise, one that has been left afield and forgotten while he cons and games his happy ass off.
