For anyone interested in the dermatological elements related to Charlie’s intro, which Shane touched on, detergents are lathering cleansers like shampoos, body washes, and bar soaps; emollients are moisturizing agents like lotions, creams, and ointments. Formulas with strong detergents lacking sufficient emollients (like *actual* soap, which is why Shane touched on that technicality) will strip the skin and damage its moisturizer barrier, which can cause rough skin texture, flakiness, and irritation. Dermatologists recommend products with ceramides and hyaluronic acid to restore and protect the skin’s moisture barrier. Detergent-free moisturizers should be applied to the face and body as soon as the washed skin is mostly dry in order to seal in the moisture, just as a detergent-free conditioner should be applied to the hair after it is washed with shampoo. While some can use 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioners or skip applying moisturizer to their face and body without causing skin damage, sensitive and dry skin types are prone to sustaining damage to the moisture barrier with these habits. Fragrances, dyes, isopropyl/denatured/SD alcohols, and some preservatives are the most common allergens and irritants in formulations. Natural products are often just as likely (or more likely) to cause allergic reactions and irritation as synthetic (made-for-skin) products. Most of the knowledge I’ve accumulated I’ve learned from the KZbin channel Dr. Dray, who is a dermatologist, so check her out if you’re interested in learning more!

Thank you for wearing proper safety gear! You can get awful chemical burns from lye if it's mishandled so it's really important to keep yourself protected when working with it.
@dragonqueen792256 минут бұрын
Yes. Lye is literally just a slightly diluted form of sodium hydroxide. Sodium hydroxide or NaOH is one of the strongest bases and has a pH of 14. Lye has a pH of 13. For context bleach has a pH of 12 and water is neutral with a pH of 7. Bleach is still known to cause chemical burns and it is less basic than lye. Lye can cause severe skin burns and hair loss when it comes into contact with skin, Permanent lung damage if vapors are inhaled, severe damage to the mouth, throat, and stomach if ingested which can be fatal, and it can cause permanent blindness if it gets in your eyes. It can also corrode metals.

For those who don’t know saponification is essentially turning a fatty acid which is nonpolar (like the oils they used) into a fatty acid with a more polar head using salt (lye). Without explaining the chemistry it essentially creates a molecule which attracts oils and can get rinsed off by water.

07:45 ... Soap is so easy to make that the pioneers heading across the Great Plains made it in camp for their journey needs to stay clean. My great-grandfather (born in 1874, who lived to be 105) told me how he made and sold soap on the Indian Reservation in Oklahoma to sell before he was 16 and enlisting into the US Army Cavalry as a "half-breed" (his terminology YT mods) Indian Scout through to the Spanish-American War and even as an NCO in WWI. He told me he used sage to add scent. Back then, the most dangerous part was using homemade lye as it was 100% pure lye and VERY caustic if it got on your skin while still "cooking" in the cauldron he used. His stories were awesome and detailed, not only about Reservation life and fighting for the American Army, but the little things such as making/selling soap to the white man as they moved on toward the west at the old trading posts. When he passed away, all his old "Indian relics" from his life were donated to a museum in San Diego, CA. I don't believe any of his soap is on display, though he did carve intricate figurines out of soap, so maybe those are rotated on display. I haven't been to the Museum of Man in Balboa Park for 4 decades, so IDK if "White Feather Johnson" exhibit is still on display. I know his uniform, Cavalry hat, Indian headband (two white feathers), his lance and carbine, other "home-life artifacts" from the reservation are still on display or are in the storage or sold off to other museums. The reason San Diego's Balboa Park Museum of Man had his items on display is he was a prominent figure in the development of the city. A member of the county council in the early 1900s prior to WWI as well as owning a semi-mansion facing the ocean at Ocean Beach, CA made him a well-known and loved man within San Diego County in his time (being that he was half Caucasian helped a bit in that role). Yes, this "essay" I wrote is due to the flood of memories that came rushing back after Charlie talked about how simple making soap actually is. I'm just sharing some memories before they vanish when I pass away one day. Thank you if you read this far.

Any body cleaning product will dry out your skin, that's literally their purpose. The dirt and sweat on your body is captured inside of the oil your skin naturally produces, so to get rid of the grime you also need to get rid of the oil, and that oil also happens to be what keeps your skin from drying out. That's why there are products you can use after cleaning that re-apply oils to your skin, moisturizers. It's usually not a great idea to clean and moisturize in the same product, you can do it but it will be significantly less effective since the cleaning part of the product will try to strip away the oils added by the moisturizing part. Though there's nothing wrong with making a cleaning product that serves mainly as a moisturizer and perfume. Our skin doesn't actually need much cleaning and warm water does the job just fine, soap and bodywash is just a cherry on top. In fact if you shower in really hot water then you probably need a moisturizer more than soap, because hot water is also really good at removing oils by melting and washing it away. Whatever makes you feel good is your best option.

You may want to invest in an African bath net as well. They are great for exfoliation and very easy to clean as well and last longer than a loofah

I'm proud of you and happy for your future endeavor, but this video has given me the knowledge and drive to make my own soap so I'll probably take that route. Danny was right, Shane is too smart for this channel...he's educated me.

This is so sick, been using dr squatch for a while and now one of my Personal favorite content creators is making soap. Awesome way to support the channel because I don’t like donating on streams 💀

Switched to bar soap a while back because I kept reading online how it was more hygienic and better for you, and I have enjoyed it and not thought about switching back once. My main issue though has always been the lack of variety with scents. The ones in my house currently are smoke, pine, fire, and leather. Which sometimes I do enjoy these, but I'm often wishing that I could have stuff that smells nicer or better complements some of the colognes that I be using. I already have to order all my soap online and this is pretty much the exact same price so I've already ordered some and look forward to giving it a shot. (also if you order yours get the soap bag, trust me they are a game changer the only time I ever though "this sucks" about bar soap is the couple days before I first got one and the times ive forgotten mine on a trip, its like having liquid shampoo without a luffa, just get the bag)

Charles is like a Mystery Box. You can never tell what he’ll be talking about based on the title alone. Makes it nice and random. Like I thought this’d be about Prime or something.

i've never bought an 'influencer' or youtuber/IG/tiktok produce before, but as someone who also suffers from psoriasis finding stuff to use on my skin that i feel good about is hard, and changing things up is always a risk of a flareup so I am SO stoked to try this.

Regular ole body wash can definitely be drying & I have ultra dry skin too so I begrudgingly spend the $8-$9 on the huge bottle of either Olay or Dove Shea butter bodywash & it's been wonderful, my fiance even uses it too. We honestly can't use anything else or we'll be so itchy from the dryness. It's also really great for the dry winter air that's coming in too.

Love seeing someone make a product for themselves and making it a truly good product. Selling it just comes as a bonus because you wanted to share your good with the world. Also learned something new about chemistry. Have a soapy day moist boy.
