It just stands out, because especially in aviation they will take a screw driver, re-name it and then charge $700 for a “flap adjustment tool”. Aircraft maintainer here, been working in aviation maintenance for about 6 years, pretty good at it. As far as the use of dawn dish soap, cheesecloth, and hotel key cards, I’ll say there’s absolutely nothing wrong about that. We use seemingly strange and unusual things as tools because of the materials of the tool, and requirements of the task. I will say that it is likely that they are still failing to uphold a high standard of safety within the industry, but as far as the strange and unusual, it’s just another case of mechanics being creative and finding a better tool or technique for the job. Also I do not work for Boeing, just making that clear.
