Not so fun fact: car insurance only covers “accidents”. A police chase where a car, stolen or otherwise, is damaging other cars with wonton disregard is considered intentional and isn’t covered. So if your car gets totaled by an out of control car during a police chase, their car insurance isn’t going to pay out and it would have to come from your insurance IF you have full coverage. If not, you’re shit out of luck. You’re stuck going after the driver who is surely judgement-proof considering everything else they are dealing with related to the police chase and whatever reason they had to run in the first place.

I think it might have something to do with the mid-air collision of two news helicopters over Phoenix live on TV a couple years back that stopped the trend. Afterwards, news stations started sharing choppers to make sure the airspace wasn't crowded like it was the day of the crash, and without their _own_ chopper they couldn't ever have the scoop. It meant they lost money from trying to catch onto any so that they could be the first. In the end, it fizzled out into HUGE chases that everyone wanted to cover anyway, and they don't happen as often.
