Mapoon, Janie Cr and heading north to the Skardon and Jackson is the nicest part of the Cape. You have to do it Lost Aussies.

Hi Mate, we are heading to Weipa Mapoon and then the Cape. We are hoping to take a 4.8mt Quintrex on our single axle trailer. Plan on taking spare leaf springs, bearings and u-bolts. Just after some general advise an thoughts ? Never been north of Noosa so I have no idea what to expect other than what I can google.

G'day 80ZX. Great trip mate and you'll love fishing Mapoon. Good idea to take some spares. I have driven over dirt roads with my boats for two decades now and have learnt a lot. The number one mistake I see that causes trailer failure is bolting big wheels to a trailer and thinking that it is now an off-road trailer. What that does is increases what suspension designers call, unsprung weight. This is weight that the springs, in your case, leaf springs, do not absorb some of the bouncing around of that wheel. The wheel just spins on a stub axil and every bump is absorbed through that axil. Technically, lower your tyre pressures to about 25psi and you get some shock absorbtion from that but that is all. So make sure your wheels are the wheels the manufacture put on when the trailer was built or, go lighter and have an alloy wheel. The wheels need to be as light as possible to reduce the pressure on the stub axil. The other issue also relates to weight and that is over loading the boat. You no doubt have a lot of gear to bring up so it makes sense to put it all in the boat, cover it with a boat cover and no problems. But my advice is to put all the light stuff in the boat and don't over load it. Once again, the trailer is not designed for such a load and it will be under too much stress. If you do that mate, it is unlikely that you will have any issues. I use the standard trailer that comes with my boats and often put light mag wheels on that make it look great as well as makes it lighter. And i have never had a trailer failure. Good luck mate and enjoy Mapoon.

@wardysfishing9403 Thanks heaps for all the advice, and I will certainly take all that on board. We can't wait to get up there and hopefully some great fishing and sightseeing. Thanks again, Mate.

went all the way to the tip in 1995 as part of am organised tour, it was an adventure then, it seems to have become more tamed now!

A lot better now mate for sure. I went early 2000s and it was a lot wilder then so could only imagine 95.

Great vid thanks did you upgrade the suspension on your navara? I am heading up there in a near new navara and getting things ready now thanks
@wardysfishing94032 жыл бұрын
No I have standard suspension and it handles it no problem at all.

Such a great video! Thanks for the info. With all the back and forward between dirt and sealed what tyre pressure do you find youre sitting on

Great question. I like them a little low. For my Cruiser i run 34psi and only 30 in my lower profile tyres in the Navara. The Navara is a lot lighter too. Dropping the pressures takes a lot of the rattling away. I often find that after a service the tyres have been pumped up to 40psi in the cruiser and everything starts to rattle.

Would love to know what's the drive like on the PDR Laura to Weipa and on to Bamaga. We will be there in about three weeks. Any information on the current condition of the road will be hugely appreciated.

Hi Cheryl. I have been on both those road over the past few days and the road to Bamaga is horrible. Sorry to say. It's rough right up to the Heathland's Ranger Station turn off, then is very smooth for about 50klms but gets nasty again for the last 60klms to the Jardine Ferry. They are grading the road this week on the other side of the ferry so that is a 35klm stretch that should be OK when you get there. The PDR is good but the usual rough patch is between Bamboo Range and Coen. The rest has a few rough patches but nothing like heading up the Bamaga Road.
