I did CY solo this year myself, just after you went through Tyler and agree 100% with everything you have said. Never had any mechanical, electrical or tyre issues at all - 10 year old, 150,000km HiLux! As you said, good preparation is absolutely the key!

I have the same Hilux. Similar kms. Haven’t done CY …yet. Can I ask what you replaced/renewed on the vehicle prior to leaving? At the vehicles age I’m concerned about failing alternators, starters and pumps - stuff you can’t predict will go Cheers

Thanks Tyler, great info as usual. We did the Tele Track about two weeks after you, from Tassie, towing a camper trailer behind a 2 litre Ranger. No dramas except a cracked windscreen. Logans Creek is the long deep crossing just south of Nolans, though not named in the Heema book. Like you, we did most of the tracks north of the Jardine, as well as the Pennefather River north of Weipa, and the CREB Track on the way home. Highly recommend Cape Flattery and Connie's Beach, north of Cape Bedford. Hope to do the Old Coach Rd and Frenchmans next time. Looking forward to your next vid. Cheers.

Hi Tyler, mate, your video is absolutely spot on. I just returned from a solo (with no passengers) trip and your recommendations are exactly my experience too. I had a Sat phone with a well capable car and had no problems. Was a ghost town until Nolans (spent 3 days there and was an eye opener). Saw nobody up until then. Had a ball and cant wait to go back

Preparation...I used to live up that way and to be honest, very few locals carried spares, right down o tyres and jacks. It was always, "Oh, someone will come along..." FNQ manyanah really. I at least carried a few tools and spare tyres etc. However, I'll be moving back up soon and will most likely be living in my vehicle so I'll have a full suite of tools, spares and oils etc., just in case I end up somewhere quiet with a broken ute.

For cleaning the inside: get an air compressor and a gun nozzle. Use the air pressure to blast the dust out of all the small crevasses. Even works on your roof lining as well (very slow and tedious but it works). I used this technique to clean landcruisers on a cattle station years ago

My old man and a mate drove up there in a 2WD back in the 50s. He said there really wasn't much of a track back then. He took a hand winch. He said they spent a fair bit of time winching the car through deep water and non existent tracks. When they finally got up to the tip of the cape they decided they would drive further north than anyone had ever done. So they waited for low tide, got the car down on the beach. Did a big high speed drive out as far as possible in a half circle. He said as soon as the wheels started getting into the water he knew they were in trouble and they got bogged. So they sunk to the chassis with the tide coming in with absolutely no one else up there with them. The old man had taken a large tarp up with them. The two of them dug frantically getting the tarp under the car. Tied it up like a boat hull. Tied the car to the shore and waited for the car to float. When it did they dragged the car into shore and waited for the next low tide to get back off the beach. I have often wondered if anyone has ever driven that far north again. When my old man died, I got a phone call from this old bloke. He told me he had been my old man's mate back in the 50s. That they had gone in the incredible journey north together but had lost contact afterwards for the most part. He managed to get my number through the hands of about 20 different people who knew someone that might know my number and so on. Was incredible hearing him tell me the same story my old man had told me many times as a kid. I wish he was still alive and I could travel up there with him and my kids.

Tyler, thanks heaps for a great in depth run down and info on Cape York and the old Tele track. We are planning on giving it a go next year around early to mid August in tandem with our son both in Rangers. My PX2 Ranger has the following setup that has all been fitted in the past 6 months. ARB Safari snorkel - Outback Armour fully adjustable 50mm suspension Lift - Hamer front bar with 12V RUNVA winch - Diff breather - Oricom 4200X UHF - At present I have KHUMO A/T tires but considering upgrading to MAXXIS M/T although according to you the A/T's would be just fine to do the job. Apart from a few other breathers have I missed anything of importance. My sons Ranger also has a very similar set up apart from a different brand snorkel. Cheers mate always great to watch you're posts and content.
