Parnelli and my Dad were friends since they ran stock cars up & down the California race track circuit in the 1950's. Parnelli was a racer, hard & fast as he could make the car go. My Dad (at 96 years of age) still talks about Parnelli with enthusiasm. You're missed by many Parnelli.

Brings back memories. Grew up in Hawthorne Ca which is about 15 minutes from the former Ascot Speedway. Parnelli was our hometown driver. Watched both him and later PJ run the 1/2 mile. When I drive too fast (I'm now 65), my wife says "slow down Parnelli". Yes, I have a led foot. Love the video.

The two things that I wish he would have touched on were that Jan Opperman drove for him in 74 and how Page suffered the same injury at Eldora in 94. At the time of their accidents, Opperman was considered the best dirt track driver of all time and Page was considered the next super star of racing. I remember the Chili Bowl in 94,I live in Tulsa. Page his younger son and P.J. were leading the A on Saturday night and one of them had it in the bag. They were putting a lap on Kenny Schrader and the all three crashed. Andy Hillenburg went on to win that year. Later that summer at the 4 crown at Eldora, Page flipped and got hit in the cage by another sprint car. It took years for him to recover, but he finally did.

He has more hair than in 1967 lol. No 1970 Trans Am Mustang? I was at Lime Rock in 1970 when I was 10, wearing my little yellow Pirates t shirt after a Glastonbury Ct Memorial Day parade, which the Little League walked in. I was rooting for Sam Posey, Donahue or Gurney. I knew Parnelli was a really good driver though. All in all it was a fun day.

Actually, when Parnelli said that Mark Donohue was on the pole, he was probably referring to the 1971 race. But that's a factual error. Donohue was the fastest at Indy that year, practicing at up to 182 MPH, but he slowed down with a setup he didn't like that Penske's mechanics put on his car for his qualifying, and Peter Revson actually won the pole for that race, using the qualifying setup Donohue wanted to run himself.

Interesting to hear him talk about the dihedral wings. There's an interview with Al Unser saying how the cars wouldn't go straight with those wings (never heard him mention not being able to see, that's a pretty big deal), and I thought that once they took the wings off they gained 10 mph or so. But according to Parnelli here they didn't go faster because they took the wings off.

One of these days, I'm planning on visiting Parnelli's museum. For one, I really want to chat, about my two "racing legend" Uncles. Last name was, Shepherd.
