Ol' Shel thinks his team has what it takes. He's got Bondurant, Miles, and MacDonald driving for him. Not bad choices, eh?
That pesky Penske guy in the Ferrari disagrees that Shelby's folks have the lock. He runs up front for a bit, but eventually comes to naught. Keep an eye on him, though..I think he's got a great future.
Thought the Chaparral I was a Scarab..until a real Scarab showed up. Yenko drove one? I never knew!
But in the end...it seems that the "rear-engine revolution" wasn't just an Indianapolis thing back in the day. Hell, my road racing tribe may have done it *first*. And I'd be proud of that, y'all know how snarky we sportscar guys are about technology. :D
BTW: I was 1yr old in 1963. Maybe that's why I dug ESPN's "Glory Days" so much. I actually laughed out loud at the 'CABLE TV IS IMPORTANT!!' ad..I worked at a cable network back then. We really did think that about what we were doing at the time. Oh, we were so young...

I raced in one 1963 USRRC event, at Laguna Seca, in my Porsche RSK 718 Spyder but didn't finish. It was very competitive and an absolute thrill to compete in. I miss those days. ;o(

First, let's appreciate Les Keiter's call of this race - classy and classic. Second, Augie Pabst takes over a car he hasn't driven and didn't qualify and delivers the win. Third, the Cobras - wow - there were "pure" racing cars all over the place, including an ex- LeMans 170+ mph Maserati Type 151 and they pasted virtually everybody. And that was a modified production car. Really shows you why the Cobra Legacy is so strong among those who know. But one more thing: for younger viewers, if any, please note that there were fairly competitive cars in the field that were up to ten years old. You'd never see that today.

I was there. My first year at RA was 1958. The cars back then had much more personality. Every thing is cookie cutter today. Cant't believe the buildings at the course now. The barn used to be about the only building. A double brat was .75 cents and a beer was .50. Free beer [ Pabst of course] on Sunday after racing if you had a pit pass which was not to hard to get with some trickery.

The concession overlooking Hurry Downs with the heavenly smoke pouring out looks the same, though. Pit stalls! Love RA, way different now though, agree. Cutting through the woods to get all the way to the back was a rocky, dense, struggle, how 'bout it? Cheers, my good man!

Love old school racing, back when you could pick the brand of car at a glance, all sounding unique and being driven not steered.

Gotta love the added sound effects of a car making skidding sounds even after it goes onto the grass lmao.

The skinny tires are ‘cute’.. in a few more years that will change as 12, 14, and even 16” wide tires are developed and seen in CanAm and FIA.

Drool City! Every car is a treat for the eyes and ears. By '73 or so, cars got uglier and uglier. Screw aerodynamics! :D Thanks for the video!

That Corvette coupe doesn't have the 63 split window. Is it an early 64 Stringray? Or is this the 64 race?

It gave more visibility with out it. A Lot would cut out divide to show they had '64... It was 50-50 on who liked divide or not??.. Looks cool to me? I like both ways... But I'm '64 kinda' guy. But '63's aren't bad either??. I like the big heads and cam of '64 motors. And the better F.I. units. They took another nice step of Fuelie units in '65. '65 unit is the one to have. All there units costs about $10 grand.. Kinda' empties a guy's pocket??.
