What has always amazed me is that for a railroad that was so quickly in financial trouble, there were an awful lot of locomotives and freight cars repainted into PC colors. One would have thought that somewhere along the line someone would have said, "Here's a thought, it is not absolutely necessary to repaint everything, we could save a ton of money if we stopped!" I'm not saying that would have saved the PC, but it certainly couldn't have hurt.

Too often the pencil pushers who don't understand the necessary internal cogs of basic operation are show boaters, too worried about image. I ran into it often in my professional travels. Corporations, school districts, etc., would squander monies on all types of expenditures but balk at addressing necessary core maintenance. The primary owner of our company, which had been in business since 1867 told me that I was just too brutally honest. He was also my captain in volunteer ems, rescue, and fire. I had told the school board and maintenance director at a Pennsylvania school district that had been neglecting issues that had become dangerous that if I painted stripes of the schools colors on the heating plant that needed desperate attention and made it 'sports related' THEY WOULD FIND THE FUNDS TO THROW AT IT. They had stammered that the repairs that I had written up as needed for five years just weren't in the budget. When I pointed out to the districts taxpayers in attendance that I had written the progressively worsening problem up for five years, only to have the problem ignored, WHILE THEY HAD PUT IN NEW BLEACHERS, A NEW RUNNING TRACK SURFACE, AND SEVERAL OTHER SPORTS RELATED AND PURELY AESTHETIC PROJECTS, the folks really started asking questions --- One of the folks attending was a local assistant fire chief. We were finally given the go ahead to make the repairs.

The PC 6105 came into Minerva Yard Ohio from Collinwood on MD 2. about 1970..It was dirty and dusty. The timetable said 6 axles were prohibited on former NYC branch lines..The 6105 sat outside my block station, for 2 days...until it was returned to Cleveland. I being a railfan and 20 years old, gathered up all the rags and a couple bottles of soap and gave it a like new scrubbing ...LOL

Neat video. I live in Orlando now but was raised in Columbus (Worthington) Ohio with 2 N&W and 1 PC tracks running right behind our house with PC being closest. At night from my upstairs room I'd watch the PC hoping to see the occassional F series with glowing orange stacks and sparks as it sped by. Wish i'd taken some photos.

I’m a huge fan of the Penn Central and actually tired of reading and hearing about how the Penn Central lost tons more of money than it made, I/we get it already. Not blaming ORLANDOSOCIETY for this but every time you view or hear something about the Penn Central, that’s pretty much all you hear. I own a few Penn Central DVD’s and thoroughly enjoy them, I would like to see one, solely on the Penn Central Maintenance of Way equipment with the Industrial Brownhoist cranes and all other equipment, if one exists. This is a great video Thank you for sharing and I’m looking forward to any further Penn Central videos you may be posting.

Very thorough presentation ! Thank you very much. I miss the different makes and styles of power, ACTUAL valved horns (NOT solenoids) so folks knew who was at the throttle, different liveries of the various roads, the different tupes of vans on the ends, the volume of traffic, and the friendly waves -- I was a kid in the 60's who had been regularly taken to the tracks to watch the trains. My grandfather was a judge and knew everyone in town. A gentleman a few doors down from my grandparents was in administration with nyc/ pc/ cr. I was shown tower operations, had help throwing switches, was permitted to turn locos on the wye, stage them on the service and ready tracks, and ride the power and van on local runs. Was a great time to grow up ---

Great video. The original photographers of the stills likely could have never imagined the photos being viewable around the world to strangers. Let alone over 4k people. Nice documentation of so many locos and the dates and places being included along with things I wouldn't have known about many of them or about what's unusual in the photo

I couldn’t seem to find it in this video or maybe I just missed it, but one of their GP38-2’s has an interesting (to me) back story. Penn Central 8118 was a GP38-2 bought brand new by Penn Central from EMD and was built in February 1973. It was used primarily as a leading unit for freight service until Penn Central’s demise and was eventually absorbed into Conrail where it retained the 8118 numbering. The earliest photo of it that I could find of it with its Conrail paint scheme was taken January 15th, 1978 and was used primarily for freight service. After Conrail’s “demise” in 1999, the locomotive was bought by Norfolk Southern and was renumbered to 5303. The earliest photo I was able to find of it with its NS paint scheme was January 1st, 2003. It also was painted with the Operation Life Saver lettering as well. After being used for more freight service and possible switching, it was eventually sold to the Chesapeake & Delaware Rail Road in March 2021 and still retained the number 5303 along with the Operation Life Saver lettering. As of August 2024, it is still in service with Chesapeake & Delaware where it continues to operate on local short lines for various industries in New Jersey.

Soimeone inside the Pennsylvania Railroad moored a merger proposal in 1959 that would see the Pennsylvania Railroad swallowing the Southern Railway, the Central of Georgia the Norfolk and Western , and the Virginian. It never got out of the talk stage . Had that happened and the Pennsy would have been the biggest railroad company in the Eastern United States and later the merger with the New York Central would have made it larger still. In June 1970 had that whole thing happened , the bankruptcy of the Penn Central would have been even bigger.....

I would like to point out that another difference between the EMD E7A & EMD E8A was the windows on the sides of the car bodies: the E7's had squarish windows while the E8's had round "porthole" windows. As for the RS32 being identified as the ALCO "alligator", I was under the impression that the RSD15 were the "alligator" locomotives.
