How big fish can this reel handle? I'm fishing Atlantic halibut that is usually in the 60 - 150 lbs range.

Their OK … but I like my older models … I’ve seen one that’s been fished a few times… I saw some dings and scratch marks on the silver … and I’m not sure I like the newer handle design as of yet… I fish Okuma Makarias mostly … but I have the Penn Fathoms as a backup and for the smaller grade of fish … I have the old style in a 15, 15N, 25N, 40N, and a 20LW for rock fishing … Time will tell on Penn’s new upgrade … when the landings used the original Fathoms on their rental rods that says a lot … it’s not the first time Penn has made a wrong decision… I fished 8 older Penn Internationals on long range since 1990 … they got too cumbersome so I sold them off 👋 👋 I’ve caught several 100#+ grade bluefin on my Fathom 40N … it’s got some big 🏀’s

What rod and line rating do you use for your 40N? I was thinking of getting a Penn fathom 30ld2 for my 50# setup on a fishing syndicate 800H 30-60 # rating. This will be used for fly lining for tuna. I will spool it with 65# braid. I have a mak 16 for my 80# setup. Love the reel. It’s a beast.

It should be noted that Makairas are "Heavy Frame" design, and Fathoms are "Medium Frame" design. The equivalent series to Makaira in the Penn lineup are the Internationals.

@@jaimefernandez3076 The 40N should normally be filled with 80-pound braid, which allows you to use 50, 60, or 80, pound topshots, depending on the day's requirements. If your need is to use 65 pound braid and "just" 50-pound topshots, the 30LD2 is the better choice.

@@tunanorth what about the 25nlds with 50# braid and top shot of 30 or 40# fluoro for fly lining?
@tunanorth

@@jaimefernandez3076 Assuming you mean the "25NLD2", that would be an excellent choice.

These are a sad attempt to combat the speedmaster. These are the same exact reels as the gen 1 with more plastic and a bigger handle. No reason to switch from gen 1 to gen 2. Id keep buying gen ones if given the choice.

No reason to switch from gen 1 I agree but still better than the speedmaster.

Right no reason at all to upgrade. Also that silver paint come off really easy, poor quality paint job. First generation all the way.
