Excellent video Denis. I just inherited this very model, and was about to start a clean up. Thank goodness I watched your vid first. A master at work.👏

I am embarrased to tell you how many times I rewound this to get the drag and related components back together on my 67. This is the trickiest reel service I have ever done but still the reel will not function because the old drag had corrosion inside and not worth new parts. Thanks for the great video!

Hmmm - the drag would not cause the reel to not work. It would only cause the drag to not work properly. Check your reel assembly again. The reel should turn free and easy regardless of whether the drags are frozen or corroded. Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle I did get the reel back together and, yes, it works without a drag. I soaked the fiber and brass rings overnight in wd40 but still a silid cylinder. Reel will be a display item!

Great video Dennis! And a classic for sure. I serviced two 67's last year that have the lighthouse scene on the plates. Not planning on using them but they might make good Christmas presents for the kids maybe. Also I have a beautiful and very rare Penn Long Beach Deluxe not to be confused with the Long Beach 259 Live Bait Caster which I also have. If I've done my homework correctly the Penn Long Beach Deluxe evolved into what we currently know as the Senator 2/0. Which I also have. I am hoping to send some projects in your direction once things improve a little more in the world. Please stay safe and well Sir!

Hmm - I have the Live liner, but I am not aware of the Deluxe. The etched side plates and the Long Beach line were one of the first reels that Penn made. I don't collect them, but I appreciate their history. - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle I will email you a pic of the deluxe when I get a chance. They were made of the German silver and in production late 30's to early 40's I believe. Very rare these days. It was the more heavy duty reel in the long beach class before the 1st generation light tackle senators were introduced.

My grandson and me are going to upgrade all of our old Penn reels to HT100 drags. About 3 years ago I had 3 Penn reels now we have about 35 of them. One of our 68s has the same drag stack and 2 has the thick drags. Would it be better with HT100s? Since I watched you work on them I have become a Pennadict. Bought 6 in the last month. Love your videos.

You do not need to replace the ticker drag set up unless they are slipping. They rarely do. If you want to replace them, Mysticparts.com makes the sells the kit. You will need to add an additional metal and HT-100 washer to make up for the thickness - Dennis

I was looking for the Long Beach 66... But the main gear and the drag stack look exactly the same in this... The two-eared washers and the mix of leather drag washers and the red hard washers really threw me off! Unfortunately the non-gear side plate is broke and the chrome ring is bent I tried to bend it back unsuccessfully... So this big beautiful real is now just parts 😭 oh! I noticed the gear side plates screws are slightly longer than the non-geared side plates screws for both the longer and shorter real seat screws... Have you ever seen this before?

OK - don't give up on this "parts reel" yet. Use crazy glue or an epoxy to reattach the broken side plate. Lay the bent side plate on a flat surface like an anvil or hard table with the inside facing up. Use a tap hammer on the flat surface of the ring all around until you hammer it back into shape. The drag washer configuration I showed in the older or original version. That stack can be converted with the new HT-100 washers by adding a few more metal and fabric ones. The 66 and 67 are the same gear side structures. The difference is that the 67 frame is wider than the 66. An finally, yes there is a difference in the side plate screws on this and many other Penn Reels of the time. The gear side plate ie wider than the bearing side, so it requires longer screws to attach to the frame Dennis

Another great video. Thank you. In your opinion. What's the best Penn reel made?
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
Wow - That is a great question as there are a lot of good reels, both spinning and conventional that have stood the test of time. If I were forced to pick, I would choose the Spinfisher and the Squidder, but there are so many good ones that have stood the time. It is really a matter of what you are using the reel for and your personal experiences that provide the answers - Dennis
