Hi, I just finished servicing my new found Penn Long Beach 68 which I bought for $10.00 AUS ( $ 7.48 US) on Facebook market complete with a Len Butterworth Powerod . Thank you for this most informative video. Without it I would have had no idea how to service the reel. Cheers

Hey Dennis, Thanks so much for posting this video. I serviced my Dad's old Penn LongBeach No. 68 reel that had been in storage for at least 40 years or longer. I have no idea how old this reel is since my Dad was using it when I was 6 years old and I am now 68. It was in dire need of restoration and I could not have done this work without your expert advice and timely video. I am amazed at how smooth this reel works now after following your instructions for cleaning and lubing the internal parts. It appears to be as good as new and I am looking forward to trying it out on the Gulf Coast of Texas. Thanks again for giving us this video. It was indeed a reel-saver for me.

I just bought an Ebay buy, and from your videos, I made a good purchase. I already ordered springs, and drags. hopefully I won't need a bearing, although I 'll probably buy one eventually anyway. I intend to use in Florida's brackish, and salt water. Thank you for your interest in keeping a video record of what you do.

Hey Dennis. Another great product to use to prevent oxidation of screws and other exterior parts is No-Lox (not sure if Im spelling it right). Its what electricians use to prevent corrosion of aluminum wires and lugs. Works great especially for applications along the shore where components are constantly exposed to salty air and water. I put a tiny dab on screws and nuts.

@@jeffreybabino1411 I personally wouldn't go below 20 pound test. The spool is massive and very heavy. It probably can take 500 yards of 20 to fill the spool. Many smaller Penn's will do the job better with lighter line. I run 40 lb mono on mine and use it for oversized white sturgeon. They are nice reels!

My dad still uses his 65 jigging for yellow fins nothing bigger than 100 pounds he's upgraded the gear sleeve to SS put carbontex drags with an extra washer and jigmaster one piece frame supports it holds like 500 yards of 80 pound spider wire they are tough as nails and aren't gonna cost you 1000$ when people talk shit about them not being cut out for big fish my dad reminds them 1000 pound blue fins have been pulled in by hand sometimes I like keeping it old school

I have a Penn 68. Just haven't ever really fished with it but a few times. Unfortunately never caught anything with it. Seems like a good reel even though I have read some bad reviews about it.

Thanks for your video. Im going to be using my grandfathers Penn Long Beach 68 reel soon and it needed cleaning and lube. I also have his Eagle Claw 524 HD but missing the spool tensioner on the crank side. Do you know where i can find parts?

I wish I could help you with that one, but the reel has been out of production for years and there are no suppliers that stock those parts. Best to try Ebay or other sites for the part or a used donor reel - Thanks for asking - Dennis

The 65 is in the middle of that line up and has been the standard of the inshore fishing fleet for decades - dependable and well built for daily use.

I'm replacing the drag washers on a Long Beach 68. The reel had no grease or oil at all inside. In taking out the drag washers I broke one of the asbestoses drag washers. There are 2 thick and one thinner red washer. Looking at replacement drag washers online it appears they are sold as a group of 3 (part# 6-113) not two. Are the original type washers sold or how would I install 3?

The original washers are no longer sold. The replacement washers are alternated, like the originals a fabric washer, then the metal keyed washers, fabric washer then the earned washer, fabric washer then the 2nd keyed washer. A short cut is to replace the broken washer with 2 of the newer washers, on top of the other and then use the other 2 original ones as they were. Also, you may need to order a 4th washer as the newer ones are thinner than the original and may result in a short stack - Dennis

I replaced both old thick drag washers on the 68 with new ones, 2 each. It worked out perfect. Thanks for your advice. Is there any way to repair the handle? it is worn/ wobbles? Is there a screw under the oil fitting that can be tightened? Or, I was thinking of drilling out the oil fitting and peening where it is worn to tighten it a bit. Ideas on this?

Hey Dennis, I cleaned my 68, it turned out pretty slick, and found out the clicker is not working because the ring spring keeps slipping off one side, because of it not being square as it wore, so I looked up the replacement part, #62, 62a it looks like I would need to drill out the rivets of the spring, then a third hole would need to be drilled for 62A, in between of the ring's rivets. Does that sound correct? If so I would probably use lock tight on the new screw. Also, the old drags (which were two thick asbestoses, and one thin red one) are somewhat thicker than what I'm replacing in it. Will that effect anything, or could I double up the drags in order to have the same thickness of the old drags? Thanks for your help.

If you click ring is loose, gently bend the one side that has lost is shape back into place below the point of the click tongue. That will restore the feature. If the click tongue is worn, you can check with Mysticparts.com by calling them and asking what replacement can be used. I think they make replacement part for the 209 series that is held in with an "E" clip. You would still drill out the original, but the clip makes it an easy replacement. You can leave the thick washes in place, They work great and seldom wear. If you want to replace them, it requires an additional fabric and metal washer to fit the stack. Mysticparts.com sells the replacement set as well. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Hi Dennis, firstly, thank you so much for your channel and all the effort you put into it - it is much appreciated. I'm awaiting shipment of a Penn 65 that I purchased on Ebay. Out of the 65s available, this one was the only one with three cross-bars on each side (like the 68 in this video), as opposed to two on each side. I was just wondering if this was a later model? Or perhaps I've just ordered a 68 that was mistakenly advertised as a 65?! Not that it matters, I'll be content either way. Thanks again, Owen in Okinawa.

The 65 does not come with 3 crossbars on each side, so you could have either a 66/67 or it could be the Senator. Either way, the reels are not that much different, but depending on the model, it may be larger than you need. Thanks for asking - Dennis

If you like the 309, the next smaller is the 209/210 and the smallest in the series is the 9. If you do not want the level wind feature then the model 155 would be best in the classic Penn reels - Dennis
