This is a proud tradition that I love so much. I have my No. 41 jerseys that I got and I went with no names on the back because I embrace the tradition. This is a proud thing that I share whenever anybody asks me why I love Penn State Football so much.

3rd place in the big 10 east year after year. Not having a competent offensive line. Allowing Michigan to run the ball 32 straight times. We are.

Can't wait till we get back to it. Stuck in neutral right now. Joe Paterno was the real deal. Will always be. I'll debate it right now.

I need no permission to speak about this. I met the man. Had supper at his house. And for the media to try and put a stain on his name? I'll represent.

Rubbish. No names on the jerseys was merely a Paterno preference, not a Penn State tradition. NOBODY in NCAA football had player names on the jerseys until sometime during the 1970s ~ '80s. And the names don't detract from the recognizable plain design of PSU uniforms. Put the names back on. They greatly enhance the ability of fans to identify players when watching the game on TV. It's not about "honoring" the players, it's about being able to follow the game more closely.

***** If the coaches, players & former players don't care whether their fans can more easily tell which player is which when watching on TV, then why should the fans care about watching them? Hey, I've been following PSU football for over 45 years and the names really didn't diminish the iconic "look" of the PSU uniform. And since most NCAA football teams didn't have names on the jerseys until perhaps sometime in the 1970s, it really isn't so much some 125 year Penn State "tradition" as it is merely a 25~35 year old Paterno preference. Well the Paterno era is over, and it's time to put the names on the jerseys as a courtesy to the hundreds of thousands of loyal fans and alumni ,scattered around this great nation, who can't get back to Beaver Stadium every game and must watch on television. Yet Franklin makes this decision to placate the childish demands of lettermen (like Troy Drayton) who want to preserve the "Paterno Way" forever.... So what's next? Is Troy Drayton gonna demand that Franklin rehire JayPa as co-offensive coordinator and split the playcalling with John Donovan up in the booth? That a Penn State "tradition" too, isn't it? It's time for these coaches, players & former players to stop being so self-absorbed about the uniforms. Put the names on the jerseys as a courtesy to their fans who only want to follow the game more closely when watching on TV.

Willie Green stick with the no names. It's just better. I don't normally think of "tradition" as a valid argument so it's not about that for me. It's just flat out better that there are no names on the jerseys. I like it. The names are a distraction. I can learn the numbers and know who is wearing what jersey.

Willie Green You've been following the team for over 45 years? That's impressive. You're a true fan. True fans learn the numbers and root accordingly.

You think so? You obviously haven't tried to memorize the entire roster for 45+ years.... I guarantee you, without names on the jerseys, they all become blurred together as one generic, no-name, no-number faceless and anonymous player... They all look alike and their achievements are forgotten.

I'm not worried about remembering their achievements... I simply want a convenient way to know which players where involved in a play when I'm watching on TV. The announcers don't always mention the names, especially those who are playing on special teams or rotating in to relieve the starters. I want to know who did what, especially when quickly using my DVR to provide my own "instant replay" of whatever play I want to quickly rreview. And frankly, I think it's inconsiderate of Franklin to not accommodate the fans who watch on TV. That's what the names arre for, not to stroke the players' individual egos.
