Penn State vs. Virginia 2002 GAME STORY

The Nittany Lions were looking for justice against the Cavaliers, who kept them out of a bowl game the previous year (2001). After Virginia quarterback Matt Schaub got off to a hot start and had the visitors strike first for the lead, it was all Penn State after that fact. Mills and the offense used the passing game early to loosen up the defense, and drove right down the field on the ensuing possession to tie the game up at 7 with a TD pass to the tight end, Casey Williams. The defense did a great job shutting down the Virginia running game; and as the game progressed, Larry Johnson got more and more carries. In a game where it seemed as if Virginia was able to defend Johnson better than most other opponents on Penn State's schedule this season, you look up at the stats and he's only 2 first downs away from yet another 200 yard performance. The solid game all-around gave Penn State another statement win and put them in position to make this a very good season amidst one of the worst 5-year stretches in PSU football history.

Larry Johnson: 31 carries, 186 yards, TD
Michael Haynes: 3 quarterback sacks
Penn State improved its record to 7-3 with the Virginia victory. The Cavaliers dropped their 4th game of the year to the Nittany Lions to go along with their six wins. They would finish 2002 with a 9-5 record, and a victory over West Virginia in the Continental Tire Bowl and a final ranking of 22 in the AP Poll.
