That's why. Imagine if he had actually fooled the best slight of hand magician in the world from 6 inches away! That's like laying out Mohammed Ali with a sucker punch on your first try! It's pretty common on Fool Us to see guys come on just to show off a trick they know won't fool them just for the publicity.

@@zabnat No, I just meant if you were for some reason offered the chance to fight Ali, and managed to knock him out with a quick punch, first try. If you're a fan of magic or atleast the show Fool Us, you can sometimes know how Penn gives away key points. Sometimes saying the word skywalker or anything about star wars because the magician did a "force". Sometimes his compliments aren't actually compliments but instead more of a sarcasm. In another episode, a magician did an easy trick and he says something along the lines of "I really like how these props can easily be bought in a magic store(meaning its a common trick)" or "Magicians put effort, practice, alot of practice to perform their act but you, you did it so effortless(audience applause thinking it's a compliment but was literally effortless.)

The sleight of hand and misdirection is very well done. I'm only going to say that I think anyway that the license moves around a lot less than someone might guess. But even knowing Penn's hints, the method of having the final reveal open the way it does is pretty baffling. Your hands don't go anywhere near the fold in the paper and the paper from the camera shot behind it looks really normal. So that is the real trick, the last 2-3 seconds. My guess is it was Teller who busted you. You had him 6 inches away from you watching your hands like an eagle. Takes a lot of guts to try and fool Teller that close...

3:58 Keep your eyes on the left hand. The envelope was never inside the mail to start with. It was inside his jacket, and right at this moment he placed the mail behind the envelope. The orange envelope was a gimmick where he had a pocket to slide the purple envelope out of it to make it look like it was inside. How the card went inside the purple envelope is where the main part is what penn is referring to. He did not directly remove the application from his jacket. He first placed the DL inside his jacket where purple envelope was(little below) and then he removes the application which was a bit topside.

@psichonautas4 жыл бұрын
The REAL explanation below: 1. The DL is put into the black envelope inside his jacket when reaching for the "application form" - it is visible for a brief moment in the lower part of his jacket (there is a system hidden inside his jacket for the DL to fall into the black envelope, but he needs to seal the envelope) 2. After taking the HERE/ELSEWHERE envelope and holding it in front of his chest the black envelope is taken from inside the jacket and put behind the HERE/ELSEWHERE envelope - he holds it together with his thumbs and passing it from one thumb to the other while rotating the former envelope 3. After taking the AXL envelope out of the HERE/ELSEWHERE envelope he push the black envelope through a tear on the back of AXL envelope and (after opening the envelope) push it through the tear and inside the AXL envelope 4. The rest is obvious. There was no "slight of hand" in the end of the performance - it is absurd to think that you can somehow do that in this situation. Slow the footage, look again, look twice, look as many times until it becomes clear to you - its just not there. However the real trick that I described here was done very well and as illustrated by most of the comments here - it fooled everyone. Even to the point of looking for easy solutions and simple explanations and calling the act "lazy", "cheap" or whatever. It is highest class, but built around old techniques that Penn & Teller just happened to knew about. Nothing more.
@ballsaroni41754 жыл бұрын
It’s also apparent when he has all 5 cards in alignment and he can easily sweep the license under the barbershop card. When he stuffs it in his pocket, he takes a little longer to put it in there and you can even hear some papers shuffling in the mic.

I suspect one of his 4 cards that he sandwiched Teller's license between is a shell card, cuz when he reveals Teller's license had vanished, he doesn't show us the backs of the first two cards, which he puts first into he jacket pocket. @@Thedownliner2015 When Penn said it's a "nest of envelopes" trick, he was underscoring that it's sleight of hand where the license is inserted at the last moment into the final envelope. All the proceeding envelopes are just for show. There are two moments you need to watch for - when he palms the licence and when he inserts it into the envelope before handing it to Teller.
@anthony83825 жыл бұрын
@@Thedownliner2015 The basics of the trick is this: He secrets the license with the first pair of cards. He prepares it when he gets out the application. He palms it when he reaches for the "Here" envelope. He maintains control of the licence while opening the outer envelopes, then inserts it into the final envelope before handing that envelope to Teller to open - handing it to Teller was the "fool them" part, because the "nest of envelopes" trick requires the magician to be in control of the final envelope to use sleight of hand for the insertion. The magician then would open the final envelope and presto your coin/watch/licence. Here, he inserts the licence, gives the letter a tap to slide it into position, then hands it to teller to open. Since the licence is already in place he doesn't need to control the envelope (although Teller starts to open it from the side, it's designed to be torn open from the top, that's not relevant to the trick, it's just presentation). The trick is complete by the time he hands the envelope to Teller.
@anthony83825 жыл бұрын
@@Thedownliner2015 Ultimately, remember his goal is to fool Penn and Teller. It wouldn't really work if Teller can tell the licence was inserted AFTER he opened the envelope. There'd be no chance of fooling - Teller is one of the preeminent sleight of hand artists in the world.

I'm still not entirely sure how he loads the envelope without getting caught by Teller, but you can definitely see him prepare and load the final note when he reaches for the "Application". One really impressive thing to me, is that if you were performing for a "normal" person and audience, he totally could have distracted and loaded the license from his hand around the 5 minute mark. He definitely did not use that method in this case (you can confirm by stepping frames), and this would definitely have been caught by Teller. I appreciate when magicians go the extra mile as part of a routine for Fool Us. My guess for the final envelope load is as follows: 1) He retrieves the license from a slit in the back pocket. 2) There is a small slit in the edge of the purple envelope, and the paper inside sticks out a tiny bit to form a funnel. The license is dropped down this tunnel, and falls to the other end where the sticky tape catches it. The paper is then shoved the rest of the way into the envelope, and sticky glue at the edge, of the purple envelope seals the envelope (still ballsy with Teller getting to at least quickly handle the envelope (you will notice that he ditches the envelope pretty quickly). He then later squeezes down on the envelop to set the license firmly on the tape. 3) I believe the reason opens the final paper and looks like he could be palming the card is just an attempt to misdirect Penn and Teller.

How it’s done > First, that BarberShop card is a sticky one and the license will stick to the back. If you’ll notice, he had to fiddle with the BarberShop card a bit when he stuck it into his breast pocket in order to get the license off the back. The license is placed inside the application through the back of the breast pocket which acts like a slide to transfer the license into the final purple envelope hiding inside his lower left part of his jacket (under the breast pocket. This is pretty much done immediately from the outside when he puts the BarberShop card in the pocket. This is why you can notice the back of the application is shiny and gray, not quite like paper. This is why he never shows the back of the Application, but we can see it from one camera angle. Grabbing and showing the application from his jacket is just a diversion in order for him to get into his jacket and make sure the license has slipped down into the purple envelope as you can see him make 2 separate hand placements, one low to make sure it’s In the envelope and then one high to grab the application. Then, the purple envelope is placed inside the back of the larger AXL envelope through a small slit in the back when he first grabs it off the table and holds it close to his jacket. He won’t show the back of the AXL envelope due to the slit in the back. Simple trick mostly done with the cover of his jacket and the large envelope. He did it smoothly and quickly, lots of practice.

It looks impossible due to some cuts in editing. Fool us has done this several times making the possible impossible. However it's a great act 👍
@AxelHecklau5 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right - too many cuts - but its not because of the trick technique. They want it as short and quick as possible. I cut down my skript from 9 to about 5 Minutes and after the recording they cut out even more of my skript so the plot / story is nearly not to understand anymore. But they did not cut out important parts to make the trick undetactable. See my show in Berlin live and you will see it‘s that clean! www.salon-der-wunder.de

The producers of the show always know the trick to keep P&T honest, and if what Penn says doesn't cover a key element of the trick, they will whisper in his earphone that he hasn't gotten it sufficiently. Penn usually then asks a question to confirm his theory, and it gives the performer the chance to deny.

I can’t stand editing on these performance shows especially a magic act. I don’t care about seeing Penn’s reaction or the audience. I want a single shot showing the whole performance with no cuts, so we see what the audience sees. Is this too much to ask????
@AxelHecklau5 жыл бұрын
I can understand and agree and disagree. On one hand - if there is some important moment cut out I hate it too (but in this case it is not). On the other hand you can not got back in a live performance and repeat and repeat over and over frame by frame. So if you like to have the "same" conditions as the audience you should only watch the video once. :-)
@BrendanWhelan5 жыл бұрын
@@AxelHecklau Thanks for the reply! I agree, and I don't mean to go back over and watch a performance frame by frame. I meant, watching it once on TV, you don't get to see what the audience sees because of cutting away to stupid audience reaction shots... Great performance! And I believe you did fool them.

I think only a German native speaker would say "gefoolt" and not "getäuscht" in this context. Das würde nur ein Deutschsprachiger sagen: gefoolt! I would never dare do that. It always amazes me when an English word pops up in a German sentence without inverted commas or is pronounced and/or conjugated the German way so naturally. And everybody knows what is meant. Just goes to show, linguistics can only describe, never predict. And language is a living thing.
