Joe performed a private show for my company a little over 20 years ago - I was amazed by his talent with close-up magic. He was performing for a lot of engineers who KNEW is was sleight of hand but enjoyed it so much because they just couldn't catch him doing it. Joe also has really big hands which would seem to make it even harder. Anyway, he provided me an invite to the Magic Castle in Hollywood which really impressed my date. We had a spectacular time and never forgot what a great guy he was.

@cafepablo11 ай бұрын
I couldn't figure it out. I thought he was using gimmicked cards, I'm assuming the Archilles Heel reference had something to do with it, i.e., the ace had a 2 of clubs sign in one corner, and the 2 had an ace of diamonds sign in one corner. He's careful to only show 3/4 of each card and he obscures the corners with his arm when showing the cards. However, at the end the cards are fully shown, showing no gimmicked corners. So I can only think the Monti Move, tucking it in his pants, removed a corner overlay as the last insertion is much deeper and there's an extra hand pat on his pants after the move. Similarly, placing the Ace in the box removed an overlay, or prepped for removal, so withdrawing it left the overlay inside the box. The cards had to be clean by the end of the trick or Penn/Teller would have seen something.
@drlol278111 ай бұрын
He usually seems to use gimmicked cards and I think he fooled them by changing his MO. He was always so carefully covering the corners of the 2 and the ace. So Joe knew they would know how it's usually done (he actually used to sell this trick) and double-bluffed them, either with a fourth card or a gimmicked case I would think. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3OnlKVjbp6ZmtE
@ofarva9 ай бұрын
I thought they were those gimmick cards where two stick together to look like one because at 4:15 it looked like he gripped too hard and spread them apart a little bit in the corner. But surely Penn and Teller would have caught that when they examined them. I’m stumped
@LogicalNiko9 ай бұрын
Yep you’re right. You use those cards because they all have a lot of white space along the edges. So really all you need to fake the two of diamonds is something on the corner. This can be attached and lined up with the corner on one of the two other cards because you have the back design printed on it and during the shuffle you just stack it appropriately. But how does this corner overlay keep disappearing…well that’s why you stick the cards in your pants. Down the front of the pants it goes! You can notice that when he is doing the three card shuffle he tends to have a gap when mixing some cards. Likely to avoid sticking it to the wrong card.
@paulremick42915 ай бұрын
Yes he does, hide the corners on the ace and 2 of clubs. Overlay comes off when he sticks him in his pants
@cantfindawayout4 ай бұрын
I am fairly certain the corners on 2 and Ace are diffirent during the majority of the trick (glued on or otherwise somehow attached to make the trick work), but those corners get removed when he puts the cards into pants for the last time before showing the whole cards. Only the 3 is shown fully (without the corner covered) during the trick. Corners are also the areas that P&T go for immediately.

The 2 of clubs card has one corner as Ace of Diamond only in the corner part (ace of diamond corner stuck on top of 2 of clubs only for the corner part). In the first monte move, when he reveals the card, he carefully hides the corner edge of the card with his hand and forearm. In the last switch, he places the ace of diamond in the box, cards in his hands are 2 of club (with the corner of diamond ace) and 3 of club. Before the reveal he places the corner in his pants and at that time he removes the corner (camera cuts away at the exact same time too). The corner part goes inside the pants now and hence the cards are inspectable. Great trick and great execution.

4:52 the ace is clearly the highest and leftmost, and he picks up that same card once the backs are facing to us, tucks the middle card in his pants and reveals the middle card to be the ace. I finally got it (i think) after a frame-by-frame. There are actually 5 cards (A A 2 2 3). The way he's holding the cards keeps it so we only ever see 3 at a time, and when he places the cards back in the box before bowing, the extra cards get hidden there. So when P&T inspect at the end, only 3 cards are left out for them to look at.

Very clever, and a nice misdirection by Joe. There's an old video of a much younger Joe Monti performing this trick, and in this video it's pretty obvious that the cards would not bear examination after the trick like was done here. I enjoy these videos for entertainment; I don't have any background in performing, but... maybe this is how it was worked? 1. The cards were true (A's, 2's, and 3's in their proper corners) 2. However, on one corner of the Ace there is an overlain 2 of clubs symbol, and on one corner of the 2 of clubs, there is an Ace of diamonds symbol. 3. These overlays are removed (magnetically?) by inserting one of the cards in the box, and inserting the other in Joe's pants. The fact that Joe tugged up on the pants after removing the cards is very suspicious. Penn and Teller should have asked to examine Joe's pants! Joe anticipated Penn and Teller would be looking for altered cards, and pulled it off nicely!
@mradelphi025 ай бұрын
Trick one and two. The Ace had one corner with the 2Clubs on it. The 2Clubs had one corner with the Ace diamonds on it. He only ever shows 3 corners of those cards at one time. When he does the last trick, he uses his pants to remove the AceDiamonds from the 2 Clubs and uses that weird contraption the he puts the Ace in to remove the 2Clubs from the corner, to leave all three cards clean. Check his pants and check the contraption to find those two pieces.
